The International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) has just updated its SETI post-detection protocols — SETI, that's Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, the instiute issuing the real guidelines for what scientists should do if humanity detects convincing evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence. It's the first major revision since the original document was drafted back in 1989.
The update was led by University of Manchester astrophysicist Michael Garrett, who chairs the IAA's SETI Permanent Study Group. In a recent interview with DER SPIEGEL, Garrett explained that the protocols weren't written for career SETI researchers — they're for the astronomer, satellite operator, or grad student who stumbles into a discovery they never trained for and suddenly needs to know what to do with it. He also stressed that any claim would need to survive independent confirmation from a different telescope, a different team, and different analysis software before anyone says the word "aliens" out loud — because, as he put it, past claims of alien activity have a habit of collapsing once more data comes in.
It also recognizes a distinctly modern problem: an alleged alien signal can go viral long before anyone has established what it actually is.
But what if you are the one who encounters an extraterrestrial — not a radio blip 1,000 light-years away, but something considerably closer? Here's how to not embarrass the species.
The protocols call for potential evidence to be independently confirmed using different facilities, instruments, and methods before anyone goes public.
So don't immediately tell the world you've met an extraterrestrial. First make sure it isn't a person, a hoax, an optical illusion, or something your brain invented after three hours of sleep. Garrett's own instruments have a name for objects like this before they're identified: UAP, or "Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena." He's been fairly blunt that most reported sightings amount to a thin data set that doesn't really support any firm conclusion — which is exactly the energy you should bring to your own encounter.
If the encounter produces photographs, recordings, or other data, keep the originals. Don't crop them. Don't enhance them. Don't run them through an AI image generator. And perhaps resist the temptation to add dramatic music.
Modern telescopes like the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile and the soon-to-launch Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope generate enormous datasets specifically so professionals can rule out mundane explanations before drawing conclusions. Your phone camera deserves the same discipline.
If you saw something unusual, say exactly that.
"I encountered an extraterrestrial civilization" is a rather stronger claim than "there was a very strange individual standing behind the gas station."
The distinction may become important. Garrett has noted that a genuinely convincing technosignature would most likely be a very narrow-bandwidth signal, since those are hard to explain as natural emissions from stars or planets — everything else invites alternative explanations first.
The new principles call for unconfirmed conclusions to be clearly identified as such. So: Good: "It appeared to communicate with me." Less good: "It wants our water." Definitely premature: "We have established diplomatic relations."
The protocols recognize that verification may take considerable time — potentially involving peer review and a full scientific paper before anything is confirmed. Garrett has acknowledged that keeping something like this quiet is nearly impossible once enough people are involved, but the goal is to be as sure as possible before going public, not to suppress it forever.
This is important because the rest of humanity will probably want an answer within about seven minutes. Try to resist helping them.
The updated principles call for international consultation before any response is sent to confirmed extraterrestrial intelligence. Garrett has argued that if astronomers don't take the lead in setting these norms, someone else — with rather less scientific caution — will end up writing the rules instead.
In other words, discovering an extraterrestrial does not automatically make you Earth's ambassador. You may, however, be the person who gets quoted in the first press conference. Choose your words carefully.
Garrett draws a real distinction worth borrowing: a faint signal from deep space is one thing, but evidence of advanced technology inside our own solar system is another matter entirely. If you find yourself in that second category, his advice is straightforward — do nothing rash. Observe passively, analyze quietly, and don't attempt contact on your own. That's not a decision for one excited person with a camera phone; it deserves a much bigger conversation first.
The scientific protocols deal with evidence, verification, communication, and international coordination. They say considerably less about basic etiquette.
So until further notice: Be polite. Keep your distance. Listen carefully. Don't make assumptions. After all, we have absolutely no idea what the extraterrestrial equivalent of bad manners might be.
The guidelines are real. The etiquette is ours.

I’m looking at Jaro spiders, an invasive species from Japan, they grow out of control, similar to the human population is out of control. We are not in balance with earth because we are not from here.
The planet Eloquent is a super planet...it is home to the greatest minds of the Universe...it has invented the incubator...the incubator manipulates the atoms of the body and triggers the DNA in the cells to perform in a fashion that is the optimum they can be. You can pick what age that you want to be and the incubator will rejuvenate you to that age. I am picking 25 years old again. That is the optimum age for a human beings development. The world will be rejuvenated in the coming year...the Aliens Eloquent are putting incubators in every corner of the world. A session only takes 5 minutes. The laser is that powerful.
We have been stalked by immortal, transhumanist extraterrestrials for tens of thousands of years; the reason they are here is that they require consciousness energy—since their digital DNA causes them to lose their own consciousness. This is why there is so much division and war on this planet: the more suffering we experience, the more consciousness energy we lose, which they can then siphon off. We humans are actually very peaceful beings possessing amazing powers—powers that are currently being suppressed because, otherwise, these entities would lose their hold on us. Love one another, forgive yourselves and each other, and help one another. There is no separation between us; we are all connected—brothers and sisters. Let us finally say NO, so that we can once again live in peace and self-sufficiency.
I have been seeing this white light that looks like a star and appears and disappears every time. It’s most definitely not a star so if I could get some of your guys opinions. I have looked up videos about this thing and people have been seeing it around their house as well but with no explanation. And believe it’s alien related as well. KEEP IN MIND ITS ALWAYS IN THE SAME SPOT MOST OF THE TIME. I have a whole collection of videos about this and I’ve been seeing these since April of this year and has not stopped since. Is this alien related or? (GO TO THE COMMENTS TO SEE MORE VIDEOS!!)
Here is the run down from the Aliens 👽 😎 😉...they are human...the Eloquent consciousness talks to me...the people of Eloquent all combined chatting to God...they told me I'm God. It came as quite a shock but I'm slowly getting used to the idea...Eloquent is a planet 10 times the size of Earth 🌎. They have 150 billion people living there. It was invented first by God. He chose to live there himself. He created 5,000 other planets. There are other planets just as big but not as advanced as us. I come from planet Eloquent. The rest of Earth come from all different planets across the universe. Pachsion...the planet where the robots come from is where the Irish came from. They are the smartest of all the other planets. They were involved in a universal war with planet Britannia...that is the planet where the English come from. Pachsion won the war by us coming up with a solution. God invented Earth...and said put people from all over the universe on this planet and whomever rises to the top wins the right to call themselves King of the Universe. The other planets did not know about Eloquent. They did not know that God was actually a human being like them...he is now human in the shape of me...when the Earth was conceived...the Pachsion people took the reigns as per God's instructions and shaped the Earth. Putting certain people in certain countries...climates etc. The Pachsion people were the most advanced of all the planets in the universe. They were allocated Ireland 🇮🇪 as their home...right beside Britannia...God wanted them to fight it out between themselves on Earth. Hence all the tension and atrocities over the years. I identify as British now. Eloquent are the British. I was born in Derry. Eloquent is where the Britannia people came from...that's why they speak the English language there. It comes from Eloquent. I have won universal war for the Irish and the British lol I'm God...I bring peace ✌️...I am neither British or Irish...I'm moving to France 🇫🇷 so I'm French 😉 ...I have to get on the Aliens group...i need 1,000 upvotes...hit me an upvote!!!...the world must hear what us Aliens are talking about...17 earthquakes in a 24 hour period in Area 51 was 17 Eloquent Spaceships landing...Google unusual activity Area 51 for yourself...they are cloaked...so they're invisible...they are revealing themselves on September 11th...23 days from midnight...I will be fetched then from Rathmullan and taken to my one true love...The Bombardier Girl Andrea Garbula of Windsor Ontario Canada.
My friends and I are not conspiracy theorists. We just witnessed the craziest-looking thing in the night sky that any of us have ever seen, and we’re trying to figure out if anyone else in the area saw it and/or what it could have been.
The pictures we captured were taken between 9:57–9:59 PM CDT in Lesterville, MO, off Hwy 21 right past the Middle Fork Bridge, at an Airbnb. This lasted for about 3 minutes. It wasn’t visible on any of our cameras when we tried to record it, which is why we were only able to get these pictures.
There were four of us who walked out to a nearby field to look at the night sky with less light pollution. We actually saw 5 shooting stars while we were out there, which was pretty cool but I’m pretty sure it was actually a meteor shower. However, we also saw a very strange object in the sky.
It changed its direction and speed dramatically multiple times, and at one point it seemed to stop completely for a brief period before going in a different direction about at a 90 degree angle. It also appeared to have a tail or some kind of black outline/shadow trailing it which I assume we wouldn’t have seen since it was BLACK against a BLACK sky), except there was a small “orb”/dot about 1/4th the size of the main “thing” in the middle end of the “tail” (it was shaped more like a tentacle”. Also the rest of the sky was bright from the stars.
Near the end of the time we were watching it, or near the end of when it was visible, it developed a hazy-looking circle around it which within a second or two became dense like smoke or thick fog. The circle continued to grow until it looked very large in the sky. Then “all of it” slowly disappeared from sight, almost as if it was moving away from us or away from Earth.
None of us have ever seen anything like this before.
We’re not claiming to know what it was, which is why we’re posting this. Did anyone else in or around Lesterville, MO see this between approximately 9:57 and 10:00 PM CDT?
We’re genuinely trying to figure out what we saw, so any ideas or explanations are welcome. We are not looking for unrelated replies, jokes, or attention/karma farming responses—just genuine input from anyone who may have witnessed the same thing or has a reasonable explanation.
I’ve spent 35+ years living in this state and looking any chance I got specifically for something strange like this to happen and none of us have ever seen anything remotely close to this and none of us could understand it.
WITH THAT BEING SAID, let me tell you what I strongly believe this was NOT (I can’t prove anything other than what we saw and the pictures provide): it does not seem consistent with a commercial aircraft, helicopter, satellite, or known astronomical object like a planet or star. It also does not match anything like a weather balloon, sky lantern, or ground-based laser/light projection.
We are also ruling out anything like a handheld remote control device (“d-ro-nuh”, can’t say name for some reason) due to the altitude, movement, and scale we observed.
Again, we are not asserting what it was—only what it very clearly did not appear to be based on what we saw in real time. If I should post this somewhere else instead please let me know, thanks.
Every time I make a post about aliens, it gets deleted. I’m starting to suspect that they only allow posts that help hide the truth, which is the opposite of what they claim to do.
