Central Florida?

Anyone in near work in central Florida? Seminole and surrounding counties? Curious if you know of any agencies that DONT require polygraph testing? It gives me such anxiety and is a huge turnoff for me. Coming to the area next month I am so excited but nervous!

Altamonte Springs is voting Thursday, Sept 3 on whether to fund our only public library — this already almost happened once

Heads up, neighbors — mark your calendar.

Altamonte Springs City Commission has a vote coming up on library funding as part of the FY2027 budget. I confirmed this directly with the City Clerk’s Office and City Manager Frank Martz.

When: Thursday, September 3, 2026 — 7:00 PM
Where: City Hall Commission Chambers, 225 Newburyport Ave, Altamonte Springs, FL 32701
What you can do: Show up and sign up for public comment (arrive by 6:30 PM to get on the list). You don’t need to RSVP, and you don’t need to be an expert — just show up and say why the library matters to you.

Why this matters (if you weren’t around for round one):
In July 2024, the city announced plans to close the library permanently, citing a $600,000/year operating cost that didn’t fit the budget. Residents packed a special Commission meeting, a 9-year-old wrote a letter to a local meteorologist begging for help, and the Commission voted 4-1 to raise the millage rate specifically to keep the library open.

Here’s the catch: the city has confirmed on the record that the money from that tax increase was never actually earmarked for the library. It just goes into the General Fund like everything else. Which means this exact fight can come back around every single budget cycle — like it’s doing right now.

A few things worth knowing before Thursday:

Seminole County has 5 library branches, and none of them are inside Altamonte Springs city limits. The nearest are in Apopka and Casselberry — not exactly walkable for a lot of families, seniors, or anyone without a car.

Since 2024, CareerSource Central Florida opened a career-coaching hub inside the library — so this isn’t just about books anymore, it’s also regional workforce infrastructure.

Meanwhile, neighboring Maitland (a smaller city) just broke ground on a brand-new $16 million library, funded by a voter-approved bond. Worth thinking about what that says about priorities.

You can reach out to the Mayor and Commissioners directly — they’re all publicly listed:
Mayor Pat Bates — (407) 571-8980 — pbates@altamonte.org
Commissioner Jim Turney (Dist. 1) — jturney@altamonte.org
Commissioner Mike Brunscheen (Dist. 2) — MBrunscheen@altamonte.org
Commissioner Sarah Reece (Dist. 3) — sreece@altamonte.org
Commissioner Bob O’Malley (Dist. 4) — BOMalley@altamonte.org (he’s the one who called the 2024 meeting that saved it)

This is a small, specific ask — one meeting, one vote, a service that costs about 1% of the General Fund. Show up if you can.

Looking for work

Hello, as the title says I’m looking for work. I’m 20 years old and I am currently looking to leave my current food service job. I’ve grown past the job itself and am looking to move on to something else. I have work in the food service for 3+ years now. I have multiple 70+ hour work weeks under my belt. I’m a hard worker and just need to be given the chance at something new. Not necessary but I am trying to do school and would like to work a 3 day workweek. If anyone can help me with anything please dm. Thank you

Sears at the Altamonte Mall in Altamonte Springs Florida (May 4 1974 - September 30 2018)

This now-still-abandoned Sears' layout here in the Altamonte Mall was nearly identical to the Gardens Mall location that also had the striped VCT (Vinyl Composition Tile) flooring. This store opened May 4 1974 and closed September 30 2018. Today 5 stores, including 2 in Florida (Coral Gables in Miami and The Florida Mall in Orlando), online store Sears.com and other brands Kenmore, Sears Home Services, Shop Your Way and Sears Parts Direct still exist so the retailer is still in business. And Samsung TVs still sell online: https://www.sears.com/tvs-electronics-televisions/b-1231470962?subCatView=true&shipOrDelivery=true&storeOrigin=Sears%20Authorized%20Supplier&filterList=storeOrigin
Televisions | Smart TV, HD, LED, LCD and OLED TVs from Sears
Sears Authorized Supplier

As for the gift cards, one of the last 5 in the United States of America, at the Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord, the last in California, is once again selling them: https://www.reddit.com/r/SEARS/s/j2AT5nQvHG

The last Sears with the striped tile flooring (and one of 5 left) is at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree, the last in the state of Massachusetts, New England and on the East Coast.

Taken sometime in the 2014-2018 period

There are also 4 (soon to be 3 after the Kmart warehouse in Fairless Hills Pennsylvania closes next month) distribution centers left. 2 out of 3 functioning distribution centers / warehouses are owned by TransformCo. In the state of Florida, the warehouse in Ocala Florida was sold off but is leased back
