Why Doesn’t the One Piece World Government Just Destroy Laugh Tale?

Ghibli plots are kind of a mess and we just don't notice because everything looks and sounds incredible

Ok I need to say this because I feel like we've all silently agreed not to. The watercolor skies, food that looks better than actual food, Hisaishi doing his thing in the background making you cry for no reason. None of that is up for debate, Miyazaki knows exactly what he's doing.

But the actual plots? A lot of these movies fall apart if you look at them straight on.

Start with the endings. Howl's Moving Castle builds up a whole war and a whole curse for two hours and then just… stops trying in the last ten minutes. War subplot, gone. Curse breaks because of a kiss. The villain who was genuinely scary the entire movie turns into a sweet old man and nobody explains why. It doesn't feel like an ending, it feels like the movie ran out of time.

Spirited Away pulls something similar and I say this as someone who loves that scene. Chihiro remembers Haku's real name mid flight, completely out of nowhere, and that's what saves him. It's beautiful. It also comes from nothing. She doesn't work it out. It just shows up because the plot needed it to.

Then there's the pacing thing. Miyazaki talks about ma, the quiet space between actions, and I get why people love that. But in Totoro that quiet is most of the runtime. It's gorgeous to sit in. It's also basically a screensaver until the last fifteen minutes remember there's a story to tell.

And the characters barely drive any of it. Chihiro goes from scared to brave, sure, but go back and watch how that happens. Stuff keeps happening to her and she reacts well. She's rarely the one steering things. That's not really the same thing as a character earning her arc.

So here's what I actually want someone to answer. Are we reacting to strong storytelling, or are we reacting to how unbelievably good it looks and sounds while the story does whatever it wants? Because if MAPPA dropped a script with this same pacing next year, this entire sub would eat it alive within a week.

Change my mind.
