Had a telehealth appt today with my psychiatrist. When I went to check in last night, I got hit with this "SASD Financial Agreement" that included a clause about technology and the use of AI in clinics.
Don't get me wrong, I think that once weve worked out the kinks in AI, it ABSOLUTELY could be used to take notes for my doctor while they focus on my care. That's a fantastic use case for it. However, at this stage in its life cycle, I am SO hesitant to give it access to my personal details. ESPECIALLY my mental health. What could a corporation do with that information??
Am I just being paranoid or am I justified in telling Sentara to eat shit, tell me when you have an opt out?
(Side note: I find it really suspicious that it's been slipped into a FINANCIAL agreement. Plus, my psychiatrist office says "MyChart/Sentara sends those off" but MyChart/Sentara says "the office sends those off"?? I am much more inclined to believe my office considering this is an agreement that applies to the app and not the office 🤔)
Note: I basically blacked out things like last names and places, but I left the Chicago in there so you can see the stereotypical ai font.
Ok so we had a bunch of family come and visit us and one of my cousins said that he made T-Shirts for everyone to commemorate the trip. In the back of my mind, I just had this gut feeling that the shirts were going to be ai generated, because while my cousins weren’t fully okay with some of the things ai can do, those morals seem to go out the window for ai art/generated images.
Sure enough when he pulls out the shirts for everyone, my brain immediately clocked it as ai. As an artist, my family is WELL aware of my stance against ai, especially when it comes to ai art. My cousins and I had even gotten into an argument a few days prior because he wanted to put a bunch of pictures through ChatGPT to edit them and I told him not to.
So, when I pointed out the fact that the image on the shirts was clearly ai generated, he said that the shirts were “40% ai free, if that makes you feel any better. He explained that he had an idea for the shirts, and because he “can’t draw” he asked ChatGPT to generate a bunch of images based on his idea prompt, and then sent all those pictures to his friend who’s a digital artist/graphic designer to piece the images together into one image.
My mother kept saying that it wasn’t a big deal and I needed to stop being difficult and annoying because the shirts were beautiful. She kept using the excuse that two humans were behind the creation of the shirt and my cousin just HAD to use ai because he doesn’t know how to draw. (Note: I’ve been teaching him to draw during this visit.) But every time I expressed that this fully crossed my boundaries and went against my morals, I was told to be quiet and that I was making a mountain out of a molehill. She also tried to make the excuse that computers have been generating movies for years, but is unaware that 3D programs like Blendr are completely different from generative ai.
Anyways we had to wear these shirts for group family pictures, which I reluctantly agreed to, under the condition that no one would post said pictures to any of their social media accounts. My cousin said that he couldn’t commit to that because the shirts looked too good, and my mother essentially told me to shut up. My response was that if they couldn’t commit, then I couldn’t commit to being in the photos. This seemed to make my cousin agree, but not my mother. Seemingly, the only person in the family who was understanding and wanted to respect my morals was my dad, who also knows the least about art out of everyone there.
No one’s posted anything yet, but trust me, I’ll be a whole lot angrier if someone does. I know this seems hella petty and not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but I just recently started a instagram account to start posting about my art, and I absolutely do not want anyone to see me in a ai generated shirt as an artist who is very against ai. I’m also pretty angry at whoever that digital artist/graphic designer is who saw these ai generated images and still decided to use them. It’s one thing if it’s like the redesigning ai stuff trend that I’ve seen, where people actually use their art skills to show that they’re better than a robot could ever be. But this person legit just collaged ai pictures together and called it a day. I feel like if you’re doing that, you can’t be called an artist, even if you have your own work. Because why are we bending our morals for that? Art is about creating things, not generating images that steal from thousands of other artists and collaging them together.
I can assure you that this shirt will never be worn again, and I will likely be getting rid of it or finding some craft-related use for it in the future.
Anyways that’s my rant. Will update if anything else happens.
