My first 1/4 doll - Shugo Fairy Ash

Posting this again because Reddit did not save my pictures...

I got her from Oueneifs. She's my first ever non-blindbox BJD. She's just so pretty, I can't stop taking photos of her. The only thing I struggle with is her wig. Not sure if it is a bit too large or if the bangs are just too long but I don't dare cutting them.

My first BJD has arrived

My beautiful Oueneifs Bertha has arrived (I’m thinking of changing that name). I just had to wait until the weekend for her to arrive from Miami.

Luckily, Shugo Fairies always come in a blister pack inside the box, so the little dent on the bottom of the box didn’t cause any problems. She came with extra feet for flat shoes. That’s brilliant

She arrived with the joints set to the perfect tension; I haven’t had to adjust a thing. When I was told here that I might have to adjust the tension of the elastic bands, I started looking for videos. It didn’t look too complicated, but I still felt a bit unsure about doing it – it’s a good thing I’ve had to do it for now.

The only tricky bit I found was putting the wig on; I looked for videos and only found one, but their method didn’t work for me. I tried several times to put the wig on until I finally managed it. Another thing was the skirt strap – I wanted to attach the buckle pin, but the strap doesn’t have a hole in it, so I had to make one with a large needle. It took two attempts; luckily, on the first try I didn’t push the needle in too hard, so it’s barely noticeable.

Anyway, now it’s time to enjoy her – she’s beautiful, I can’t stop looking at her. Here’s a quick, casual photo I took just to show you all – a few days ago I was making a little display stand for her, which you can see in the background. My room’s a bit dark, but I positioned the table so that light comes in from a window and from the doorway, and I also had to switch on the room light.

I don’t think I’ve left anything out, but if I have, I’ll let you know later. I hope you like the photo.

BJD Photography.

Hi again, whilst I’m waiting for my doll to arrive, I’ve been looking at tips for taking photos with her. I don’t have a digital camera, let alone a semi-professional one, so I have to make do with my mobile. I recently changed my mobile and, unlike my previous one, this one doesn’t have a professional mode to adjust the settings manually, but the photo quality is better.

Do any of you take good photos with your mobiles? If so, how do you do it? Do you take them outdoors or indoors? If indoors, how do you manage the lighting, the setting and the background, etc.?

Apologies if this is a bother. But I’m so excited thinking about all the things I want to do when she arrives,

Recasts keep the BJD community alive

This is kind of a rant but i’ve been thinking about it for a while, i think recast are actually good for many doll brands.

I think the idea that people wont buy originals just because recasts exist is not really true, as if people had the money, they would buy the originals. I think original dolls and recast cater to different groups and i don’t think thats bad.

Recast can make really popular different dolls, which i think kinda happened with blythes, as recasts were “cheap” and accessible so quite a lot of artists started making custom dolls. This made the dolls REALLY popular, and even if the vast majority of this new buyers wont be interested in keep purchasing more dolls, another part would be interested in doing so! My case for example, i started making my own custom blythes due to how accessible they were for me (a broke uni student). This really got me into collecting BJD, as it was something i really loved but i thought of inaccesible for me. I ended up buying an original Pullip doll and a blank 1/6 BJD for customizing all second hand!

My take basically is that accessibility get people into the hobby.

This being said, i would love to read everyone’s takes and different perspectives!

Iplehouse Grace Recast

I am considering buying an Iplehouse Recast BJD doll off AliExpress and have a couple of questions. I have no BJD dolls so it's new to me. Do you usually need to string the doll when you get it? This process looks very intimidating on the YouTube videos I've watched.

Also, has anyone heard of the Shop1103200996 store? They have a lot of positive reviews but I am cautious because so often the doll pictures in an AliExpress ad are very different from the reviewer's ads for the same doll.

Here's a screenshot of the doll I am considering buying for reference.

New to hobby - How to lower costs of getting new BJD?

hi! completely new to the hobby and planning to 'make' one in the image of my OCs, but since I'm a student, my disposable income is pretty meager (I do have enough saved up to get the most basic of dolls, though)
Is there anything that can be done to lessen the overhead costs and subsequent maintenance? Thanks!

Clarification: currently, I'm planning on asking a friend for help with the faceup and learning how to make (simple) custom clothing, but the overhead for wigs and additional modifications + future maintenance still exists :(

Making Waves with my new Jelly

I'm really happy with how my custom hat came out I made with scrap fabric and a hot glue gun ! I bought this base doll off AliExpress and I saw so much potential and decided to try and make her more of an ocean theme. I switched out her wig ,eyes, and made my own custom hat . I'm proud of my work just wanting to share her with you all. The last picture is how the doll came to me.

I tried body blushing first time on spare doll feet I got 🙆‍♀️

So as title says I tried body blushing for the first time and my aim was to achieve realistic look as possible. I used liquitex varnish and I don't think it looks bad first the first time. I'd love to get feedback and any advice. I also added compressions with unpainted version. This was just for test and I thought I can body blush whole doll if it looks good. Should I body blush whole doll or keep practising? Thank you!

Oh shes exactly what I wanted.

Bought a 3D printed rabbit doll of etsy and I really like her. Shes just what I wanted for my character for DnD. I have to do the face but that can come a bit later. My only slight gripe is that the magnets holding the back of the head on arent the strongest. But I can work around that.
