Really been looking to getting a 2017-2019 540i, planning to tune it and drive spiritedly a handful of times. I’ve yet to find an answer from people with experience and I don’t really have the time right now to go out and test drive some of these, but I am concerned about the suspension. I’m into sporty but also comfort, however I don’t want to stage 2 this car and have the performance be held back by floaty and soft suspension. Is the base suspension that bad when pushing bigger power? I know that it will feel nothing like a 3 or 4 series, but I just don’t want to be severely limited by how the car drives and feels under load. I understand it should be hard to find one with the m sport suspension, let alone the m adaptive suspension. If I end up making my mind that the ride feel will be a limiting factor for me I might look into the x3m40i gen1 instead for a couple extra thousand bucks. Is that a good alternative if I can’t find a 540 with the m sport/adaptive suspension?

Randomly had a weird start last week where I hit the start button, the car didn't do anything for 2-3 second and then started. Got a drivetrain error but went away on next start.

Nothing happened for a week.

All of sudden today, I go to start the car after sitting overnight and nothing happens after hitting the start button (but dash comes on). Try again, nothing, try one more time and it starts. This has happened a couple of more times today where it just says repeat start. Anyone have ideas? Starter? Battery maybe? Any help would be appreciated.

I was driving at around 125 kph on the motorway last night and there was a sudden very loud thumping noise coming from (it seemed) the rear drivers side wheel.
I thought it was a tyre blow-out, but I never lost control at all. I stopped and had a good look but there appeared to be nothing wrong whatsoever. I slowly drove the remaining 10 Km home and after inspecting the wheel/tyre area thoroughly, could see no sign of a problem and the car drives fine now. The ONLY thing I noticed was the plastic underbody splash guard had a slight sag in it right next to the wheel. Could this fairly flimsy plastic panel cause such a loud noise? Honestly it sounded like a loud bass drum thumping at two beats per second.
Anyone else experience this? I have been driving 50 years, and this is a first for me!

Anyone know anything about this and how bad it might be?

I've had a G30 530d xd LCI for the past week, it's a great car.

But - i'm having slight buyers remorse over owning the diesel, and think really I should have gone for the sportier 340i

Do you think i'll regret the step down in luxury feel for the petrol/fun that the 340i brings?

I don't want to hand this new car back and change to the 340i and regret the 'downgrade' in the 5 series positives.

Anyone ever stepped down from a 5 to a 3 and regretted it?

I'm looking to buy a 2017–2023 BMW 540i G30, most likely around 50–75k miles, and plan to keep it until at least 130k+.

I'm looking for personal ownership experiences, especially the more niche G30/B58 issues that aren't just normal maintenance.

If you've owned one, I'd really appreciate:

1. Major or unexpected repairs you've had
2. Mileage when each issue happened
3. Any preventative maintenance you recommend

I'm particularly interested in more niche experiences such as:

• NVLD / EVAP
• Active grille shutters / air flaps
• A/C evaporator
• Guibo / flex disc
• Center support bearing / driveshaft
• Differential / differential mounts
• Water pump / thermostat / cooling system
• ZF 8HP / mechatronics / valve body
• Advanced suspension options, if equipped
• Any other G30 540i-specific issues you've personally experienced

I'm not concerned about normal maintenance like oil, tires, brakes, etc. I'm trying to understand what I could realistically encounter buying one at 50–75k and taking it to 130k+.

Stock cars preferred for comparison.

If you've owned one to 100k, 130k, 150k+, I'd especially like to hear how it's held up.

Also, in market for BMW 540i G30 RWD 40–70k miles, fully optioned interior+exterior, but prefer stock wheels (19" fine), brakes, and suspension options.

Hey yall, ive been trying to find a trusted place that is not over pricing for an ecu unlock and figured id ask reddit for advice. Yall know any good places in northern California that will unlock for a decent price? I've contacted over 20 places and its looking like it will be between 1.5 and 2k to do this, not sure if I should just buy m-link and do it myself at this point. Please let me know!

Does Carly or bimmerlink still allow you to register new batteries? I used it on past BMW’s and my current battery in my 540 is due.
