Interview with Brothers Without a Tomorrow about Blossoms of the White Night for Japanese portal ちるちる

That’s just google translate from Japanese (I’ve done some editing, mostly on name and place spellings, but there are probably mistakes anyway, I’m sorry!)

Please read the original version here: https://www.chil-chil.net/compNewsDetail/k/801authors108/no/43400/

— Could you please introduce your work?

Blossoms of the White Night is a story about two men from different countries who meet and learn about love for the first time in the history of their nations—two lands that are polar opposites in environment and ideology.

The story follows Shuraka, a young emperor from the scorching desert country of Arnata, and Tei, an older uke from the freezing, snow-covered realm of Lerakal.

As each other’s first love, the two spin a romance that looks clumsy and somewhat frustrating.

This is a love story depicting the tale of adults who still retain some immaturity.

— What kind of top/bottom dynamic do the main characters have?

Shuraka Loram (Seme)

He is an emperor with overwhelming beauty and presence, making even those he meets for the first time realise he is no ordinary person.

While he possesses the ambition of a virtuous ruler to lead Arnata into a greater and more ideal nation, his reign was also characterised by such brutality that it is known as the “Age of Rivers of Blood.”

In front of his beloved Tei, he shows a sweet, gentle, and affectionate side, but to everyone else, his ruthlessness as a ruler is evident.

His extreme duality is what makes him such a captivating character.

Tei Woodvan (Uke)

A handsome man from the north, he possesses a well-trained physique honed through monster hunting and battlefield experience. His taciturn and calm personality is like a snowfield.

He has strong convictions and pride, and is willing to sacrifice himself for his homeland. He even went to Arnata in place of the princess as part of a political marriage.

Equally impressive is his chivalrous spirit, seen in how he recognises the qualities of a king in young Shuraka and pledges his loyalty to him.

He is a person who is instinctively loyal to those he believes he must protect.

— Who are the rival characters or important supporting characters?

Nashid, Jakar, and Mush’nu are especially important. They are Shuraka’s close associates, and also reliable figures who offer advice and support to Tei.

Nashid is my personal favourite, and he’s my second favourite character in this work. I really like the setting of a cheerful man marrying a lovely woman and having a family.

By the way, my absolute favourite is Tei.

— What were some of the key things you focused on in this work?

The decorative details that bring out Shuraka’s beauty to the fullest, and Tei’s chest... I really put my all into drawing them. I worked on it with the feeling that “I have no regrets.”

— Could you tell us about the difficulties you faced and the things you enjoyed?

It’s definitely Shuraka’s appearance. There’s absolutely no part that can be neglected; everything from his eyelashes to his hairstyle, decorations, and clothing is incredibly detailed.

I often forget to draw accessories or patterns on her clothing after I’ve finished, so I have to go through a lot of checking and corrections. When you look at the same picture for a long time, you get used to it and it becomes harder to notice mistakes, so my assistant and I take turns checking it.

However, recently my assistant has also gotten used to it, and sometimes we both make mistakes (laughs).

Also, Tei has a lot of moles on his body, and it’s difficult because I sometimes forget to draw them. They’re small, but they have a strong presence, so I’m very happy every time readers notice the moles. Thank you!

— Are there any behind-the-scenes stories related to this work?

Initially, we considered a “pregnancy-based” setting, but ultimately we removed it.

We felt it “didn't fit the story,” and we judged that the conflicts and developments that arose precisely because that element was absent were more appealing.

We apologise to readers who were expecting it, but we thought to ourselves, "It has become difficult to achieve."

— Could you share any memorable everyday episodes from your writing process?

This might sound a little strange, but occult phenomena sometimes occur only when I’m working on this particular piece. This never happened with my other projects…

For example, I felt like someone was calling my name, and when I answered, I found my family was out and I was home alone.

Maybe I’m just too exhausted from working and it’s making me crazy? But my two large dogs, who live with me, also reacted to the voice… so it might not be just my imagination.

In Korea, there’s a saying that “if a ghost appears in a recording studio, the song (or singer) will become a hit,” so I’m taking it positively.

Also, my parents know I’m a BL author, but I haven’t told them the title of my work or my pen name. I’m afraid they might search for it if they found out, so I’m deliberately keeping it a secret.

Even so, my mother has been persistently asking me to tell her the title of my work and my pen name until recently, showing interest while saying things like, “I like Piccolo (from Dragon Ball, Japanese ドラゴンボール).”

My mother probably only sees BL as “a genre where you admire handsome male characters,” so I’ve decided to keep it a secret from her.

— What is your hobby right now?

I’m really into glass art.

I’ve always liked glass lamps and objects, and recently I’ve been going to a class once a week. Right now I’m working hard on making a hamster.

— Could you tell us what inspired you to become a BL author?

When I was a child, my mother often read manga, and I naturally started drawing because of her influence. The influence of a relative who was good at drawing was also significant.

I learned about the BL genre when I was in middle school, but I didn’t start drawing seriously until I was over 20.

While my peers were watching Cardcaptor Sakura (カードキャプターさくら), I liked Legend of Heavenly Sphere Shurato (天空戦記 シュラト), and I was particularly drawn to the characters with good physiques.

I could draw lots of handsome, well-built men—and pairing them up made it twice as fun! I was drawn to that appeal, and I’ve been drawing diligently ever since.

— How do you feel about the work process now?

I enjoy drawing every day.

I want to show you the continuation as soon as possible, but as I get older, I’m starting to feel my physical limits, which is a bit frustrating.

That’s why I’m also taking care of my health. I plan to keep drawing BL until I’m 60!

— Please leave a message message for Chil Chil users!

Thank you so much for your continued support. I carefully read every single message of support for the “Full Support Squad” campaign held on BeLTOON. When I’m going through tough times, I remember those words and keep going.

I would be honoured if my work could be a small source of support or comfort for you all.

Life is never smooth sailing, and there will be times when you face difficult times. When that happens, I find solace in engaging with my favourite works.

I hope my own work can bring a little happiness to your day, even if it’s a difficult one. Please take care of yourselves. Thank you!

Half a year since Lezhin published the Blossoms of the White Night promo video ✨

I think the music choice is rather dramatic but fits well 🤍

So, it’s been six month since the promo video was released (the first chapters were published earlier, starting on Dec 1 2025).

I don’t even remember when or why I started reading BOTWN and got so hooked! I mean, I have the author’s full bibliography on my tbr and am working my way through it, but nothing beats my love for Shuraka so far. I can’t remember exactly when it started 🙈 probably sometime in the spring.

(So it looks like it’s video week in our cozy subreddit! Sorry, that was not intentional 😌)
