Ensenada & Valle de Guadalupe

will be driving from San Diego to Ensenada next week with my dog. Solo 3 day getaway. I am interested in visiting Valle de Guadalupe for the afternoon. Is it dog friendly? Would I be better off driving my own car there? or are there drivers or tour companies that will allow my dog to come in the car? Any recommendations are appreciated.

sea of cortez hotels/resorts for honeymoon?

Hello! My husband and I are planning a honeymoon to Baja California Sur. We are looking for an all inclusive or restaurant on site and a place that feels remote and peaceful with good swimming, snorkeling, maybe a hot tub. really hoping to enjoy nature and the wildlife. we are not interested in night life, ha. I was thinking something on the East Coast, but near magdalena bay so we can drive across the peninsula to the west coast and see the gray whales. Thank you!

edit: we are planning to visit late March 2027, early April 2027

Solo baja roadtrip

Visiting Ensenada from SF

Hi everyone,
My partner and I are planning a 6 day trip to Ensenada in August. We live in the SF Bay Area. We are excited to explore Ensenada and Valle de Guadalupe — we love the outdoors, food, and wine!

  1. What is the best way to get to Ensenada? Should we Fly to San Diego and then rent a car to cross? Should we cross by foot and then rent a car in Mexico?
  2. How easy/difficult is it to get by on elementary Spanish and Google Translate?
  3. Is it safe? I’ve heard mixed reviews about safety in Baja California. One of us is a more experienced traveler (been to Europe, Asia, and more recently Oaxaca) and the other is used to living in big cities in US.
  4. Looking for food and winery recs, or any fun tours/hikes/cultural destinations we should go see!

Has anyone here done a weekend trip from San Diego to valle de Guadalupe recently?

I've searched through a few older threads but most of them are a couple of years old. im trying to figure out the transportation side of the trip. For those who have gone recently, did you drive yourselves the whole time or hire a driver tour servide once you got there?

just curious what San Diego are doing these days since crossing a car and then visiting multiple wineries seems a little complicated.

Not looking for winery recommendations as ive already narrowed those down, mostly interested in the logistics.

Ojo de Liebre Lagoon vs San Ignacio

Ojo de Liebre Lagoon vs San Ignacio which is the best spot for close up whale interaction?

I read that Ojo de Liebre Lagoon brings more whales but not sure if they actually come close most of the times! I also read that depending on the boats the whales interact because of the company/boats/captain know how to approach whales gently! I don't know how much of it is quality info but that's what I read.

Any recommendations on boat tour companies? I also read that one can hire a ride once reaching the place and that there will be plenty boats available!

Anyone can explain the process for taking a trip to close watch whales? I am not planing on going with a traveling company where they do 3 or 4 night stay, that would be toomuch for me.

Depending on location selected from Ojo de Liebre Lagoon and San Ignacio. I will have to plan my travel, it looks like drive is the only option!

Besides Ojo de Liebre Lagoon and San Ignacio are there any other locations i should look into?

Thanks!

CA Temporary License

My wallet was stolen last week and I currently have a temporary CA paper license from the DMV. My physical plastic license card won’t be back in time. Has anyone driven down to Tijuana with a temporary license and had any issues? Is this allowed to drive with a temporary paper license in Baja? I’ll be driving to the Valle Del Guadalupe.

Why Valle de Guadalupe Beats Napa, the World-Class Wine Region Two Hours From San Diego

I just want to share one of my best trips I ever had. It was years ago and I still can't get over how beautiful this trip was. Seriously! 90 minutes south of the US-Mexican border is one of the most beautiful valleys I have ever seen and almost nobody from the US knows it exists... And its not even a long drive. Oh: And wine lovers: this one is for you. It's also a fantastic wine region... We stayed and the private rental houses of El Cielo winery.

Valle de Guadalupe is in Baja California, with dry golden hills with vineyards and farms spreading in every direction. The restaurants out here are open air, fire-grilled, locally sourced, long communal tables.... And some of the best meals I've had. Lunch for two with drinks runs about $30. The drive alone through open countryside with the Pacific on one side is worth the trip. (Best sunsets!!)

Fun fact: What most people don't know is that this desert valley, its dry hills, granite boulders, agave growing wild, produces 70% of all wine made in Mexico, with over 150 boutique wineries, many of them world-class.

One of my favorite restaurants was Animalon (Google it up, you won't regret it). It is a whole restaurant under one tree! Fantastic food. Runner up: Finca Altozano (also on google). The scenery, the vibe is just amazing. It was rainy that day but even with the rain it was beautiful.

Having lived in Cancún for years I already knew that Mexico is not what most Americans think it is. Valle de Guadalupe is the perfect example. This is not a resort. This is a serious destination that costs a fraction of what the same experience would in California.

Cross the border at Tijuana, get on the toll road south, and within 30 minutes you are in open countryside. Stop in Ensenada for fish tacos on the way back. The ones at the Mercado Negro are some of the best I have had anywhere.

Has anyone else been to both Napa and Valle de Guadalupe? Because I genuinely think Valle de Guadalupe wins.

Best beach vacation in Baja driving from SD

Hi friends! My spouse and I would love to vacation in a nice beach area in Baja. We cannot fly, so driving (probably ubering) is the only option.

Any recommendations? We don’t mind driving for a few hours by Uber or bus!

Short trip in August?

Hi all, I live in LA and would love to spend a few days relaxing by the beach and eating good food in the first week of August, after I take the Bar Exam. Do you think it would be doable in Baja, or would it be too hot? Any recs? I like good food, culture, color, laid back vibe. FWIW I speak Spanish. Thanks!
