Which flute should i buy tanpura tuned or piano tuned

I have talked to Gemini for hrs about which one i should get. I want to buy C and G flute however i am stuck whether to get tuned according to tanpura or piano. I want to be able to play both raag and bollywood songs in performances. Since both scale are famous for bollywood i have been suggested to get it piano tuned however i want to learn flute and it requires the same scale for classical.

Alankaar Practice App

Hey everyone

I started learning bansuri a while back and couldn't find a good alankaar practice app so I am making one, there are still some rough edges I need to smoothen out before I put it out for everyone, meanwhile if you'd like to try it out and help me with the feedback. Please DM me for the link.

Does everyone here just does online learning or in person classes too?

I don't know much about traditional music, raga, genres etc. but I'm very interested to learn. And bansuri to me is my natural instrument. However I sincerely believe it's worth learning from a guru in person, of which I have no idea where what when how to find one.

It's good that there are lots of online resources but i struggle to follow a systematic and defined manner of learning through that medium.

If you can share your thoughts on what works best for you please?

Recently, my G Base PVC flute broke 💔

As the text says, it broke due to my clumsiness. I own a C# Punam Flute as well.

I am thinking of getting another base flute but i don't wanna get a pvc one this time... And bamboo base flutes are quite expensive. That was the reason i bought the PVC one in the first place.

Transposed Legend of Zelda - Lost Woods into Venu flute notation

I've been playing the Venu flute for a year now and I decided to transpose Western songs I'd like to play for extra practice. I love playing traditional Indian music on my flute but I thought it would be fun to play some more modern/Western music, especially those from video game soundtracks. I'm working on the Island Song from Adventure Time at the moment, and plan on eventually transposing Kairi 1 and Passion from Kingdom Hearts sometime soon as well.

I'm not sure if this will work for Bansuri flutes as well but I believe I've transposed it correctly. I've played the song and it seems to be right. I originally transposed this in a notebook and then edited the sheet music later so I might've copied down a note incorrectly. Please let me know if this works for Bansuri flutes and if you're a fellow Venu flute player, enjoy.

Three years journey - reflection

For a reply to another post, I checked my Amazon and saw that I bought my first PVC C scale flute on 10 August 2023. I probably got it on 11 or 12 - so that makes complete 3 years of flute learning journey! But it is not a straight journey and I did quit many times, I think longest break was about 20 days in 2024.

What will I do differently, if I started today:

  • I will practice alankars at different speeds - simple ones. I remember I keep coming to this, and everytime I start doing something complicated and then leave it. Instead I will master basic alankars (SRG, SRGM, or from lower p to high p etc) and will make sure I can do these comfortably at many speeds
  • I will not go buy so many courses! Wasted a lot of money to learn the lesson that it takes time and a lot of hard work.
  • I started learning vocals at some point but was not very regular - I would double down on this and basically spend more time on learning vocals while my fingers were still getting used to playing flute.
  • I will not get distracted or discouraged by some people getting it so easily while me spending hours and not getting it.
  • When I started I told myself I will be happy if I could play some simple tunes, but kept changing the goal post and got demotivated. Changing goal post is natural I guess but I will accept that with changing goal post I will have also give enough time.

When I started I had almost no knowledge and I am old as well. Despite being so irregular and not listening to popular (& good) advice (do long notes etc) I did well enough. I am sure anyone can learn this if you give enough time and hard work. All the best!

Fungus in Bansuri!!!!

I bought new punam flute, first time I'm having premium flute 🤧. Its so sensetive to humidity and moisture.

too dry -> cracking problem (apply almond oil)

too much moisture -> fungus grow

What I did:

I went through multiple haldi treatment, fill will haldi in all holes, shake and leave it for couple of days. Do this for 2-3 times. Near the blowing hole fungus gone and moved to other end.

If not works go for neem or anit fungal thingy.

How to clean:

I put soft cotton rag of full length from one side and shake, and rotate the flute and then take it out.

How to prevent:

Dont blow too hard. If it's feeling cold means moisture trapped. Play in breaks after 30 min and put it vertically in open for some time before putting it in case.

I built a next gen tanpura / practice app for Indian classical musicians — looking for feedback

Hi everyone,

I’m a bansuri player and musician, and over the past months I’ve been building an Android app called Tanpura Atmosphere.

It started because I wanted something a little more inspiring than the usual tanpura app — not only a drone, but an environment I could actually enjoy improvising and practising with.

Alongside the tanpura, the app includes things like atmospheric drone layers, tabla, swarmandal, nature ambience, advanced recording features with reverb, and other tools for practice and improvisation.

The free version already has quite a lot in it, and I’d genuinely love for musicians here to try it and tell me what works, what doesn’t, and what you would want from an app like this.

You can find Tanpura Atmosphere on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tanpuraatmosphere.app&hl=en

If you try it, feel free to send feedback, bug reports, ideas, criticism, etc. to:

resnick.aviv@gmail.com (or using the feedback button in the app)

I’m also interested in collaborating with musicians.

If you enjoy the app but can’t/don’t want to pay for Pro, here’s one way to get a lifetime Pro licence:

Make a video of yourself genuinely playing/practising with Tanpura Atmosphere, clearly mention “Tanpura Atmosphere” on screen and in the description, and if the video reaches 1,000 views, send me the link and I’ll give you lifetime Pro.

It doesn’t need to be an advertisement — I’d actually much rather see real music being made with it.

I’m still actively improving the app, so feedback from people who actually practise Indian classical music is particularly valuable.

Thanks, and I’d be curious to hear what you think.

Ashwin Srinivasan on practice

https://youtu.be/yi1TLBRI7b8

A few years old, but I just came across it and think it's well worth a watch.

Deeper than the usual 'split your 1 hr practice into X segments', Ashwin talks in detail of how to tailor practice to your own particular deficiencies. And a lovely example of his gayaki ang approach to learning to play a bandish.

starting to practice Sargam

I am trying to play sargam using metronome, but, playing basic note, talking specifically about transitioning from ma to pa, it sounds very bad. like the Pa is very bad if i play in sequence.

also, i feel like while playing, the flute slightly rotates and i cant place fingers properly.

if you could help with this..
