I'm starting to learn flute can anyone give me a channel which I can religiously follow without second thoughts or some roadmap which u think would be best for me.

Stuff like alankar, taal, playing by ears.

Good intro to ICM rhythm (taals)?

Anyone have a link to a good source of basic info on Indian music rhythms to hand? I'm not planning to play any drums, but I often find it hard to identify taals in things I listen to (teental is about it).

There are lots of sites/videos etc, but all the ones I know assume knowledge the reader/viewer may not have - eg. they'll tell you teentaal is 'Dha Dhin Dhin Dha' etc, without any info on what the syllables 'dha' etc refer to.

I know a few terms (eg. sam & khali), but still have no idea if just finding the number of beats in a cycle, and hearing the sam & khali are enough to identify a taal.

I'd be grateful for any recommendations.

Would anyone here be willing to help test an Indian music notation app before release?

Hi everyone,

I’m the Hindustani flutist/developer who shared srgm.io here recently — the platform for writing and sharing Indian music notation using Sargam (Sa Re Ga Ma).

I’m now trying to get the Android app version released publicly, and Google currently requires a small closed testing phase (12 testers for 14 days).

If anyone here would be willing to help test it, it would genuinely mean a lot to me as an independent musician/developer project.

The app lets you:

• Explore community notations

• Hear notation back with playback

• Save your own repertoire and notes

• Practice with tools like transpose and alankaar generation

To join the test:

  1. Join this Google Group: https://groups.google.com/g/srgmandroid
  2. Install the Android app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.srgm.app

You can also try the PRO subscription if you’d like — Google clearly marks it as a test purchase and you won’t actually be charged during testing.

Even simply installing the app and keeping it installed for the testing period helps a lot.

Thanks again 🙏

Is flute a good hobby for music? Beginner looking for advice

Hey everyone,
I’m thinking about learning the flute as a music hobby. I’m a complete beginner but I really like its calm and soothing sound.

Do you think flute is a good instrument to start with for someone learning music casually? If anyone here has experience learning or playing flute, I’d love to hear how your journey was and whether it’s difficult for beginners or not.

Also, which flute would you recommend for a beginner? I’ve also seen the Krishnaflute online learning platform/course — is it actually good and worth it for beginners?

Would also appreciate suggestions for other budget-friendly online courses or YouTube channels. Thanks!

Looking for Hindustani Classical Flute classes in Pune

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to start my journey with Flute and am searching for reputable classes or gurus specifically in Pune.

A bit of context:

Background: I have some experience playing the Harmonium, so I have a basic grasp of Sur and Taal

Preference: I am strictly looking for a classical/traditional approach rather than just learning Bollywood tunes.

Schedule: I’m looking for classes that offer weekend batches, but I can make weekdays work if the location and timing are right.

Does anyone have personal experience with teachers or institutes here? I've heard of names like Gandharva Mahavidyalaya (right now it's close for holidays) but I’d love to hear some first-hand reviews regarding the teaching style.

Thanks in advance!

Does Bansuri Always Use the same Sa (Top Three Fingers)?

Are there examples of performances where the raga is based on a different pitch than the left-hand three fingers down Sa?

Or to phrase it another way, do Bansuri players ever transpose fingerings, or always just choose a flute in the key that is needed?

edit: thanks for the replies! I come from a Western flute background where flutes frequently play in keys starting on a variety of notes on the instrument. it sounds like with Bansuri this is more common in light or popular music but in classical raga playing they mostly stick to 3=sa.

How do you find notes of a song

I have been trying to map with low to high pitch graph. Sometimes, I am close. But I miss so many notes in between. How do you find it?

(Not searching for copying someone's note kind of solution)

I'm learning without a guru, so I'm confused if my technique is correct or not. 3 months still I face hissing sound also whenever I start I have to adjust else the sound is improper in between.

Is pvc c flute ok and what should I buy next for transition. Is taar saptak supposed to be a bit pinching in c scale. Also what channel should I follow to correct my posture once and for all.

Should I just use metronome or start playing in different taals

So far I'm just able to play titanic and some other songs by looking at the notes.

When can I actually hear the music by looking at notes what practice do I need

Guess the tune.

So I tried to learn this beautiful tune. Scale - D natural medium flute. Also don't mind the unclear audio due to bad microphone. Been learning seriously from 9 months solely from youtube. Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

Can i move to a G base flute from a C medium?

Its been around 4 months since I started practicing, I can play all three octaves, Play Pa to Pa' in one breath.
And my birthday is coming up so I wanted to get myself a bigger Bansuri.
I am not planning to get more than 2 bansuri unless needed, And I really like the sound of a G base bansuri.
Is it doable? I dont want to get something that I cannot even handle.

When should I upgrade from c scale??

So I can play saregamapa cleanly in every octave and I have practised 3-4 songs fully and one alankar(pyramid alankar)

So when should I switch to another scale? and which scale ?

should I go for g bass of e bass?

Understanding classical music

I listen to a lot of classical music on sitar and bansuri but I don’t get what is being played. How can a person who is not involved in playing any instrument or who does not have any knowledge of the classical music understand what is being played.

Can anyone help me with this doubt of mine?

Thanks,

Sugesstions required. Blowing Sound.

So I've been playing flute for 2-3 months now and I don't know if this is correct or not. I find other people playing very clean but when I try to record myself blowing sound occours, but I dont hear much blowing sound myself when I play it.

Hello I am begineer player. I bought a F# based flute (68.5cm) , it has usual 6 holes and a 7th hole to go a semitone lower.

I can reach the 6 holes fine after struggling a bit, but I am having a hard time reaching the 7th flute.
