Which would be the best for working weddings as a photographer with a second shooter to stay in contact.

Looking also for recs for an earpiece with mic.

First preference would be the easiest to use without accidentally getting on restricted or licenses required wavelengths. I wouldn’t be upset if I had the ability to listen into police scanners or air traffic communications without the ability to or hard to transpond on those channels. Not sure if that’s even an option. Any advice on this option would be welcome.

'Baofeng Radio Ham Radio Handheld UV-5R Upgrade 5RM 10W' radios for my son and I (8/36) for fun like hiking/camping, and generally to mess around the neighborhood. Can any one plz help and give me the quickest rundown on 'how to use'' without violating any laws? (Also how do I use its maximum range or is that a no-no?)

I’m new to HAM and bought the DM-32UV. I’ve been finding the UIs and software for radios absolutely horrendous. I don’t know how HAMs have dealt with such badly done software. Even seemingly basic things are hidden is multiple sub menus and acronyms making the barrier to entry for noobs so much higher. It’s like the radio manufacturers WANT to kill off amateur radio.

Now that my rant is over….for the life of me I can’t figure out how to have two analog channels shown on the radio. A goes to analog and B goes to digital. I’m I just going to have to use the stand along Baofeng/CHIRPS software to do this?

I’m a student planning to take my license exam in a few months and get a handheld (looking at a Baofeng).

Originally, my cousin and I wanted to do this together so we could have our own simplex channel to mess around and talk across our local bay (around 8km distance). But he just got a new phone, completely lost interest, and admitted he’s not really into it.

Now that I'm into this completely alone, I’ve lost a lot of motivation. To be honest, I’m not really interested in sitting in my room just chatting about the weather or antenna setups with older guys on repeaters. I wanted that active, tactical "team/adventure" feel with a friend.

For those who started solo as teens/students: how did you find your crowd, or how do you keep the hobby fun and active when you're the only one in your friend group doing it?

Edit: I live in a small village and we dont even have a middle school so I'm very limited when it comes to clubs and stuff :( but still thanks for all the replies!

I plugged in my normal earphones into its earphone jack and it didn't work at all. I am guessing this radio is only compatable with a special type of earphone? I am only interested in receiving using an earphone.

For example, I went on a whale watcher boat cruise recently and could not even monitor the staff without drawing attention to myself on their radios because my regular headphones did not work on the UV5R. Where can I find earphones for the mini UV5R?

Hello I am completely new to radios and HAM and so on.

Recently the government has been telling people to keep a radio (and food, water etc...) for possible emergency situations in the futures.

Is a baofeng possible to use as a radio during emergency situations (to listen only, not to transmit anything). If so, which one would you reccomend?

Anyone know how hard it is to program DMR repeaters by the keypad on a DM-32? Don’t have access to a PC to do this currently, so want to try doing it manually. Can it be done by the keypad, or would it be frustrating to even try?

I had the above radio gifted to me by a friend, when I put the radio in the charging Dock the green light stays on, it's supposed to be red to indicate charging, any advice appreciated, Thanks

I want to install the 1.47 Frimware for the radio but mine says it has the 1.49.

I was searching online for something but i couldnt find anything about it.

I am trying to program these repeaters (https://www.howardcountyreact.org/gmrs) into my Baofeng UV-5G PLUS radio with CHIRP. Are these the correct settings? CHIRP will not allow me to populate both the Tone and TSQL columns at the same time.
