Bullwinkle

This is my Fender Squier VI Vintage Modified, Bullwinkle. The pickguard started as white, and the bridge is from Offset Guitars UK. The Offset Guitars UK bridge is fantastic compared to the original. My VI is called Bullwinkle because of the paint job. At the very end of the cartoon Rocky and Bullwinkle, there is some animation that have used as inspiration. Since I got this VI its all I'm playing these days, the guitar is on the sideline as is the bass.

Bass VI with baritone guitar strings

I am buying a squire bass VI and want to put baritone guitar strings on it, in regards to the size of the nut should I put 14s or 15s on it. My preference would be 14s but I’m worried they wouldn’t fit in the nut well.

NBD Vintage Modified

I've been semi-obsessed with the idea of a Bass VI since I was a teenager and saw them in a Fender catalog from the late 60s. Hadn't really played one aside from brief music store try-outs. I found a reasonably priced (for Reverb I guess) 2018 Vintage Modified in oly white with bonus a tort guard. Plays nicely out of the box and intonation seems close. For those with set up experience: is the bridge supposed to look like this? the height adjustment screws are at a crazy angle on the bass side.

Alternatives to Fender/Squier?

Like the title says. I have a hard time finding options that aren't Fender or Squier.

- I know there is the Schecter Ultra VI (mostly unavailable) and the Ultracure (overpriced I think)

I know there is an unobtainable Danelectro and an equally elusive Music Man.

Alexander Hacke plays a white one that I found and forgot the brand of again, people say it's not the best guitar ever made (about $700, sold by a US brand, made abroad).

But there must be more? Every search I make with a "bass VI" turns up nothing but Fenders and the occasional six-string bass (which aren't Bass VI for what I am looking for, I want that New Order/Cure sound that is so neatly between bass and guitar). Aren't there any other options currently manufactured?

which one would you recommend? Thank you!

I just stung up my VI with a set of LaBella flats

And I don't think it's right for me 🥲 too much tension and not enough of the clang I grew to love with the round wounds. Makes it play more like a bass but I think I prefer it being a strange middle ground between bass and guitar. Just wanted to share my pain as these strings were not cheap

More tension?

Hello Everyone,

I’d like to play my bass VI in standard D and drop C but on factory settings the strings are too loose and it sounds awful. Also sometimes I’d like to play in standard E, but mainly stand. D and drop C.

What do you suggest? How should I set up the guitar for these tunings? I’m quite new to this bridge.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Have a nice day!

Anyone here play in Eb Standard?

My band is considering covering The Killers and most of their songs are half step down. I'd like to try just playing the songs in standard, but I'm curious if anyone regularly plays in Eb.

My Bass VI has flats on it, so I think it should have enough tension to work. Curious what others have done with off the shelf strings.

Thunderbass VI

Hey folks! Wanted to share a project that I finished up last week.

Recently, I've seen some posts on r/offset where people have put Epiphone Thunderbird pickups into Jazzmasters. I thought it would be fun to try putting a pair in my Bass VI to see how they sounded. In addition to swapping out the pickups, I made a few other changes:

  1. Got rid of the stock trem and put in a Herad hardtail plate. I never used the trem all that much, but I held off on changing it out because I wasn't sure I wanted to invest the money into changing it. I've actually found it to be a worthwhile change. The Bass VI felt kind of "rattly" before, which going to a hardtail resolved. I was hoping that the hardtail would let me use strings with a shorter taper (specifically the EB 9-string set), but no dice. Seems like the taper length is still about 32.5 inches vs the EB's 31.
  2. Installed a 3-way Telecaster switch and (neck-only) strangle switch using a Herad control plate. Telecaster switch is pretty self explanatory; I like it better than the individual slide switches. I used to have a 10-position Freeway switch in my Bass VI, but I found I kept forgetting which position did what. Three positions is good, partially because it's hard to forget. The strangle switch has three positions (off, on, and half-way-ish). I stole the idea from this post. Having it be neck only works really really well with this pickups, as I'll get into.
  3. Routed new pickups cavities, shielded them, and routed a new pickguard. I made some templates using Blender and 3D printed them. You can kind of see from the pictures, but I designed the templates so that they could attach to the body/pickguard using the existing pickguard screw layout. This made it pretty easy to keep it in place. It took a decent amount of trial and error to get the size right; the Epiphone pickups are a smidge bigger than the dimensions I found online for Thunderbird pickups. I got the pickguard blank off of Ebay and only had to route for the pickups. The fit of the screw holes is ok, not great, but it looks fine after you get it attached.
  4. Installed a TBX pot for the tone knob. I did this on another guitar a while back and loved it. If you're not familiar, it's worth looking into. It gives you the ability to cut highend or lowend instead of just highend. I've previously used PTB circuits, but this is sort of the same thing in one knob. It lets you go from bass territory to baritone guitar quickly.
  5. Installed what I'm going to call a "Dustin Kensrue" mod. If you're not familiar, Dustin's signature Music Man has a stereo jack with a switch that lets you route the individual pickups straight to different parts of the jack so that you can route the signals individually. EG you could send the neck pickup to a clean amp and the bridge to a driven amp. I did the same thing with a stereo jack and a (250k) S1 switch; neck goes to ring and bridge goes to tip. I've only gotten to mess with this a little bit (just got the stereo cable in). I've mainly been sending the neck pickup to a bass amp and the bridge to a guitar amp. I'm looking forward to dialing in some sounds with it; it seems like it'll be pretty cool.

I'm pretty stoked with the end results. Beyond the stuff mentioned above, the pickups sound great in a Bass VI. The neck pickup makes the instrument feel like a proper bass guitar, but the bridge is thin enough to do low-tuned baritone guitar stuff. I think the real magic (as other people have observed with these pickups) is the middle position. In particular with the neck strangle switch engaged, it sounds massive without being muddy. I'm very pleased with how it came out.

Fender custom shop bass vi

Anyone know how to change the pick guard on these? Do you have to remove the string mute completely?

Just got one

Had my eye on this for a while now, really loved the colourway. Originally a guitar player but been playing bass for the last 10ish years always short scale, absolutely blown away with how much this registers as a bass through a bass amp. Fantastic guitar for the price point and Looking forward to what's possible... bass trem guitar solo 🤣

Wide range pickups on Bass VI? I'm after some pickup recommendations for drone

Has anyone tried fender wide range humbuckers on Bass VI? My stock Squier Bass VI is too microphonic for good drone feedback sounds unfortunately. Otherwise I'm pretty happy with the sound of the pickups, especially the middle one. I'm pretty keen to put a jazzmaster pickup in the neck position, and maybe a wide range humbucker in the bridge. I'm probably going to try potting the middle pickup and see if that helps.

I can't find anyone online who seems to have tried a wide range humbucker in the Bass VI though? Has anyone here tried this, or does anyone have any pickup recommendations for drone playing? I'm keen on big long chords, feedback with lots of bass (stock pickups go straight to screeching), and plenty of low end rumble.

Where the heck can I try out a bass VI?

I live in the SF Bay Area and I guess there are a few guitar shops that have a bass VI but there must be hundreds of guitar shops, I can't visit every single one. The Starving Musician in Santa Clara apparently has one used Ibanez SRC6. Maybe I'll try to check that out. No Guitar Center has one except for the one in Emeryville.
