Beaucy Planning (Breeders, housing, temperament, etc.)

Hi everyone! My name's TJ, and I'm super excited to join this community! I’m beginning to research Beauceron breeders for a future puppy, so I figured this would be a good place to introduce myself and start learning from people who actually own and work with the breed.

I’m still a few years away from bringing a puppy home, most likely once I move out and settle into my new living situation. Because I have so much time, I want to do this the right way. Right now I’m mainly learning about different lines and finding breeders whose dogs fit what I’m looking for.

I grew up with two Lab/Pit mixes, so I'm comfortable with larger, strong dogs, but I'm completely aware that a Beauceron is going to be a completely different experience from either of them.

My ideal Beaucy would be a male, preferably towards the larger end of normal breed size. Temperament-wise, I'm looking for something pretty moderate. I need a dog that is energetic and ready to go when we're outside playing or exercising, but has a really good off-switch at home. Being able to settle calmly indoors, around guests, and in crowded public environments is very important to me.

I'm fairly active now and honestly wouldn't mind becoming more active for the dog. I'm also a HUGE football fan (Let's go Giants!), so one of the things I'd love to teach my future buddy is football fetch and eventually some fun commands/routes with a football. Good recall, heel work, handler engagement, and just being able to take my pup places with me are super important to me.

I would also like an affectionate dog. I'm super aware that Beaucerons are velcro dogs, which is one of the reasons I've come to love the breed. One of the appeals of a big male to me is honestly having more dog to cuddle. I'm a decently big guy, so the more dog the better. I'm not looking for a dog that needs to be working every waking second. Instead, I need a confident, playful, athletic companion that enjoys doing things with me but can also come home and relax.

As far as housing, I will most likely be living in an apartment with some kind of yard access; however, the field I'm going into will give me a huge opportunity to move into a house with a yard earlier on. Either way, in preparation for my pup, I'd be basing my housing situation off of nearby parks, trails, and places where we could actually get out and exercise.

Lastly, appearance-wise, I'm especially drawn to harlequins. Ideally, I'd love a very visible, high-contrast pattern with a good amount of merling throughout the body and up to the head and face. That said, I am completely aware that temperament, health, and breeder matching have to come before markings. I'd rather wait for another litter than take the flashiest puppy if the breeder felt he was wrong for my lifestyle.

Since I've got several years to prepare, I'd really appreciate guidance from owners and breeders on what I should be doing between now and then.

If you could help, I'd love to know things like:

  • Where did you get your Beauceron, and what has your experience with your breeder been like?
  • Are there any breeders you'd personally recommend I start researching or following, especially in the U.S.?
  • If you're comfortable sharing, what breeder/kennel is your dog from, what is their temperament like as an adult, and would you go back to that breeder?
  • Are there breeders or particular lines known for producing more moderate, companion/sport dogs with good off switches?
  • What should I be looking for when comparing breeders, pedigrees, bloodlines, health testing, and previous litters?
  • Are there other Beauceron resources you think a future owner should know about?
  • How early would you recommend actually reaching out to breeders if I'm looking to wait for a specific sex/color/temperament combination?
  • What do you wish you had known or prepared for before getting your first Beauceron?
  • And is there anything about my preferences/expectations that you'd adjust?

I'd especially love to hear from people with Beaucys with a temperament similar to what I'm describing. I'd be really interested to know where they came from and what their lines are like.

I'm definitely not looking for a puppy anytime soon, and I'm not trying to get on a waitlist tomorrow. I'm mostly looking to spend the next two or so years learning, meeting the breed in person, researching reputable breeders, and following different programs and seeing how their puppies mature into adults. I figure the more information and connections I can build now, the better chance I'll have of eventually finding the right fit for me.

Any breeder recommendations, resources, experiences, or general advice are appreciated!!

Cons of Svajone? Are my concerns reasonable?

I have been looking into beacuerons for the past few months and a name I keep seeing people rave about is Svajone. In every group I have looked at so far that's the name that comes up the most for top recommended breeder. I have heard all the things people feel make her a wonderful breeder, but I have also seen a handful of vague comments about people having bad experiences but not being comfortable talking about them. This is usually followed by a slew of people attacking that person, some of them seem to be her friends? In other breeds I have seen more balanced opinions about a given breeder or professional responses to negative opinions.

From her website she seems to be a good breeder but the online environment is just weird. It's odd to me that a breeder would associate with people who are publicly rude & attack others in the name of defending her, just from a professionalism standpoint. I'm also hesitant about the number of litters she produces per year but supposedly that's typical for beaucerons? I searched this sub and the only negative comment I found was that she had an oops litter in 2025. So I have some concerns but I'm not sure I should write someone off if they're producing good dogs.

Does anyone have concrete cons/negatives about this breeder? Specifically looking for the negatives because I have already read plenty of the positives.

15-month-old Beauceron regressing to puppy-like behavior after first heat — looking for advice

Hi all,

My Beauceron is 15 months old and had her first heat back in May. For a while afterward she actually calmed down noticeably — but in the past few weeks she’s done a complete U-turn and started acting like a young puppy again, and honestly it’s worse than her puppy phase ever was.

Here’s what’s changed:

**•	Mouthiness**: She’s mouthy pretty much constantly throughout the day now, way beyond what she was like as a young pup.
**•	Humping**: This has come back out of nowhere — she hasn’t done it since she was little.
**•	Panting**: She pants a lot, like she’s stressed, even when she hasn’t been active. She often is a panty dog but this is excessive and she appears very stressed
**•	Whining/whimpering**: Frequent, including while she’s playing with toys, which is new. She often does it just walking around the garden or house
**•	Destructive chewing**: She’s started destroying things (sofa, her bed) — she never did this even as a young puppy.
**•	Listening/commands**: She’s noticeably less responsive to commands she previously knew well.

Things we’ve ruled out or tried:

**•**	Took her to an **orthopaedic vet** — nothing found.
**•**	Started a **pain medication trial** yesterday on the vet’s advice — no improvement yet, but it’s early days.
**•**	Feeding is correct type/amount for her age and size.
**•**	Exercise seems appropriate — not over- or under-walked.
**•**	Thought it might be overstimulation, so tried a few days of shorter, calmer walks — made no difference.

Has anyone experienced something similar, especially post-first-heat? Could this be hormonal, behavioral, or something else we should be looking into? Any advice on where to go from here (further vet workup, behaviorist, etc.) would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

What’s people’s go to shampoos for your beauce?

I’m on the hunt for some good quality shampoo, I’ve used up all his puppy shampoo so I wanted to know what you guys recommend! I find a lot of shampoos make his coat go super poofy and he looses some of that more wirey feel to his coat. I’ve seen some great shampoos people recommend but they’re like £100 for a small bottle.. so preferably something that won’t break the bank!

Beauces with DQs

Hey guys!

Show me your beaucerons with DQs for the show ring! This is my girl, one of her dew claws she has the dew but no claw! On the other foot she has a very small claw coming from one of the dews while all others are normal.

Which this was totally okay with me as she’s my up and coming sport/herding/protection dog along with demo work for her! She’s been a great addition, just turned a year. My Zelly girl.
