Safety concern at Lafayette & Bedford G station — man grabbing women

Just want to caution people to be on the lookout around the southeast corner of Lafayette and Bedford, near the G steps. There is a man who frequently loiters there, and while he has generally seemed harmless, over the past three days I’ve seen him standing at the base of the steps near the turnstiles, lunging toward several young women and asking them for money. This morning, I saw him grab one woman by the arm. Just wanted to flag it so people are aware and can stay alert when entering the station.

Maspeth Ridgewood Mutual Aid Table

I started the Maspeth/Ridgewood Mutual after I started putting stuff outside that my family did not want anymore and we couldn't sell on the Marketplace. I noticed the items would disappear and my neighbors would bring items to replace them. My friend who helps shut ins in Glendale brings over whatever food she has left and leaves that on the table for people to take who visit my mutual aid table.

Thursday August 6th, I received 6 deliveries of donations (clothes, food, toys, housewares, books, DVDs). By Saturday August 8th the table is empty.

Items that are in high demand:

FOOD FOR PEOPLE OR PETS

CLOTHES

TOILETRIES

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

DIAPERS FOR BABIES & ADULTS

TOYS

BACK PACKS, LUNCH BOXES & POCKET BOOKS

Books really don't go on my table, so when I get a donation of them I wait a few days then I bring them down to the Little Free Library in PS 153's school yard.

Donations can be dropped off, and you can take what you need 24 hours a day & 7 days a week:

5938 60TH ROAD, MASPETH

Donations can be dropped off at certain businesses during business hours. Just label them Maspeth/Ridgewood Mutual Aid Table.

ASSEMBLYMAN STEVEN RAGA'S OFFICE, 60-14 QUEENS BLVD., CELLAR, WOODSIDE

COOK'S ARTS & CRAFTS SHOPPE, 80-09 MYRTLE AVE., GLENDALE

SCHWILLE-D'ANGELO FUNERAL HOME, 66-32 MYRTLE AVE., GLENDALE

STATE SENATOR JOSEPH ADDABBO'S OFFICE, 66-85 73RD PLACE, MIDDLE VILLAGE

HARISCH STUDIOS, 57-44 MYRTLE AVE., 2ND FLOOR, RIDGEWOOD

For people who cannot donate in person I created an Amazon Wishlist:

https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/JY7U8QQZ8BBU?REF\_=wl\_share

Thank you for all donations. And if you are near the Maspeth/Ridgewood border and are in need please check out table and take what you need. No questions asked. Please spread the word. Thanks.

It finally happened to me!

Walking to Turtles on Malcolm X, someone brushed against my arm and they dropped their bag with a clink of broken glass. They made a great show of inspecting the bags as I handed the dropped one back and kept going. "Hey, buddy! This one's broken!" came the call. Cool, enjoy that!

I'm baffled that this scam ever works, but I feel flattered that I look so smooth and innocent that they'd try it on me.

Fosters ready to adopt!

Hey neighbors! Hope you are having a fantastic summer. As my username may suggest, I love cats! And I’ve got two long-term fosters here in bedstuy who have been ready for their forever homes for quite a while now.

Nori and Yoshi are the sweetest 5-ish year old boys, especially Nori who is just a love bug. They’ve been in foster care with me for over a year now. They both get along with another cats and people, are well behaved, and healthy. Yoshi tends to be shy around new folks but Nori was in my lap the day after they arrived last year.

The rescue I’m working with has extremely limited resources and because of that we’ve been mostly on our own - which is totally ok! It happens. It just means we haven’t had much support in getting the word out. I’m not sure if we’ve gotten any applications for them in all this time.

“But catslady,” you may be asking, “if they’ve been in your care so long why not just keep them?” I have, of course, thought that over extensively. But I already have 4 cats of my own, and would have to give up fostering because I’d be out of space!

If you’re looking for a pair of sweeties to supplement your universe, look no further! Happy to answer any questions you have!

Attempted robbery on Macon between Tompkins & Throop, July 20

Posting now in case it helps someone—a pretty strange and traumatizing event happened to me on July 20 around 4:00 PM.

Please don’t criticize me for what I did/didn’t do; I’ve gotten flack from a surprising number of people because I am of the opinion that the cops don’t/won’t do anything in these situations (based on dealings with them prior to 7/20).

7/20 was a beautiful, sunny day, the first reasonably cool one in over a week. I was walking home from work, when, at 234 Macon Street (between Tompkins and Throop—the address is memorable bc there’s a tree with white paint on its trunk), two teenage boys came up to me and demanded I give them my things. They called me several expletives and told me to hand over “everything I had,” to which I replied with various iterations of “no” and “stop”.

I kept stalling (“Why are you doing this? Leave me alone”) hoping they’d just give up, but the tension rose and I noticed the taller boy was holding a knife at his side and getting closer to me. I tried to get into the street by skirting between two parked cars but the boys cornered me, one on the street side and one on the sidewalk. The taller one kept shushing me, saying “Be quiet or I’ll fucking stab you.”

At that point, I obviously became afraid and started telling them to stop a bit more loudly; fortunately, some men who were working on a home renovation on the other side of the street street about ~15 feet away noticed something was wrong and started yelling at the boys. I managed to start crossing the street toward the men and the boys fled toward Tompkins.

I was really shaken up and some neighbors began to come out of their houses to see what was going on. A kind woman gave me a chair in the shade and offered me some water, as did the workers. I declined to call the police or otherwise file a report at the time, as all I wanted to do was get home.

I tend to approach situations like this one from an anticarceral perspective—but this was an odd one since I, in theory, could have easily been harmed. The boys were both Black and I am white. They looked to be under eighteen years old and may have been as young as fourteen or fifteen. The shorter one claimed to have a gun but I doubted he did. The taller one definitely had a knife but I wasn’t certain he’d use it; ultimately, I just wanted them to realize they were making a very bad choice and leave before anyone got hurt.

They were wearing nondescript clothes (knee-length, mesh shorts, tank tops, probably sneakers but I wasn’t looking at their feet) and the taller one was wearing a blue surgical mask, so I couldn’t see the bottom half of his face. His hair was in short braids. The smaller boy had a short haircut IIRC. Both were thin and not particular muscular.

In sum, I can only hope they never try this BS again and that y’all stay safe out there! The workers are heroes and I’ll be forever grateful they stepped in when they did. I’ve lived in NYC for 11 years and this is the first time something like this has ever happened to me so I guess I’m doing alright. Watch out for your neighbors—I know I’ll be paying closer attention when walking alone going forward.

Orange cat on Lewis/Bainbridge

Met a very human friendly orange and white cat on the street at the dead end of Bainbridge and Lewis Ave. No collar and came directly up to us. It just wanted lots of pets and followed us a bit, so it’s definitely not feral and looked very healthy, but there was no indication it had a home base. Does anyone know if this is someone’s outdoor cat?
It could’ve been accidentally let out?
It was so sweet! If it’s not someone’s cat already, it would quickly find a home !

Starting or joining a casual Sunday night film club

Hi! I used to be part of a weekly film club where we'd watch a film out at a theatre, or someone's apartment if there was space and they felt comfortable hosting. I really miss the routine, and also have wanted to do it frequently Sunday nights to fight the Sunday scaries.

Does anyone know of any existing Sunday film clubs, or is interested in starting one together?

If starting, am thinking we would start with a few at a theatre in Brooklyn (we can choose once we have a critical mass and know everyone's commute), and maybe get a few drinks after if we are vibing.

Living off Franklin C as a woman

Hi neighbors would appreciate hearing folks’ experience living off the Franklin C (especially as a woman).

I’m a POC woman who has lived in NYC for over a decade but something about that Fulton/Franklin corner gives me a sense of unease every time. I have had a few physical subway scares this year so I may also be a bit shook up from that. I need to commute almost daily.

I know about the Armory shelter nearby and the plasma donation center being a rough mix that draws the wrong crowd, junkies, dealers, etc. Any perspectives appreciated, thanks!

SOS - What bodegas near Gates J serve pork bacon?

Just moved here from Bushwick, although before that I lived off the Chauncey J. Love the 24 hour bodega closest to my apartment, but they’re halal.

Where can a gal get a real deal BEC around here? Willing to walk ~10 min in any direction for when the craving hits.

Cannot find my car - 2015 Honda Accord Sport

[ETA - Blue 2015 Honda Accord Sport ]

Hi - having read through this subreddit all day I know this has been posted everywhere but I figured it cant hurt

I parked my car on MacDonough between Patchen and Malcolm X and foolishly forgot to move it this morning for street cleaning while walking one of my clients dogs. I figured there would be a ticket but the car is totally gone - I traveled up and down the area and when I ran into some cops and asked for the rotational logs they couldn’t find it

Told me to call 911 and report it which the lady on the phone told me was a waste of resources ☹️

It’s a MD state license plate (boo boo tomato tomato I know - it’s been transferred to me bc my dad no longer can drive AND I had an appt) and it’s honestly kind of a beater, so I’d be surprised if someone stole it but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

The license plate is 2EJ6896 and there’s a HUGE scratch on the left side (perhaps why I took someone’s keys).

If you happen to see it I would buy you the STRONGEST drink or item of your choice. This is such a nice community and I’m happy to give back however I can!!
