On the blindfold policy and what it means

I recently spoke with a friend who teaches law at another school that also offers online classes. Their Dean specifically advised the faculty against blindfolds, not out of leniency, but (really) because they simply don't work. All they do is add stress to students who are already reciting under pressure. Other schools have looked at this idea and passed on it. That should tell us something.

Last April, I shared my letter to Dean Ulan on the blindfold policy. One term later, and I still got no response (and the policy is still enforced without signs that it will be reviewed). So I sent the follow-up email, and I'm sharing the original letter again for those who missed it.

I'm not sharing this to pile on the administration. SBCA got a lot right by going online, and I said so in the letter. But policies only get reviewed when someone raises a hand. If you think a rule is heading backwards (like this one or any other), say so, in writing, respectfully and on the record. The worst that happens is silence. I know that first-hand, and I'm still writing.

P.S. For the curious, magicians have been "blindfolded" on stage for a century, and Amazon sells the see-through kind for a few dollars: https://www.amazon.com/Rock-Ridge-Magic-Blindfold-Mentalist/dp/B003QSZ4JK

Not a recommendation, folks, just proof that a policy that's easy to beat isn't protecting integrity.

Suggestion to SLG

Hi SLG! I wanted to share an idea and see what the community thinks.

As we know, a large portion of our OL classes consists of working students. Many of us are balancing demanding day jobs and heavy professional responsibilities with our law school journey. Taking a full load is a huge feat, and the students on the Dean's List completely deserve that honor! However, it got me thinking about the students who have to take an underload due to work commitments but still perform exceptionally well in the subjects they are enrolled in.

Since our school is so welcoming and inclusive to working students, I thought it might be a great step forward to propose a special academic recognition for those who excel despite their divided time.

Maybe they can set the ff. such as:

  • Set a minimum unit requirement
  • Grade cut-off: Reaching a specific GPA/QPI requirement that is similar to the regular Dean's List.

It wouldn't replace or take away from the official Dean's List, but rather serve as a separate commendation (like an "Academic Merit Award") to acknowledge the hard work of underload students who are really giving it their all.

Hope the SLG can hear this!

Dropping Subjects

Bakit walang sumasagot sa DO? Kahit call or email. Sa mga nakapagdrop ng subjects after dropping period, naaapprove ba agad ang request? Nagsubmit ako ng form sa DO pero until now wala pang response. If waiting ba sa approval need pa mag-attend sa subject na iddrop? And how much ang dropping fee? If maapprove ang drop, do I still have to pay for the subject I dropped or automatic adjustment ng fees sa accounting? Sorry for asking this here, wala kasi nakuha response sa DO.

Happy crushes as secondary motivation in San Beda? May oras pa ba tayong lumandi dito?

Hi! Fresh 1L here! I wanna talk about something para naman hindi puro professor inquiries.

Do you guys have happy crushes/ full on crushes/ obsessive crushes/ etc.? Parang high school no? but really!

Do you guys like, use it as motivation na "hindi dapat ako bumagsak, sabay kami grgraduate" LOOOL orrr something like "I want to join _____ para naman makita ko siya" you know?

I know, this post might be inappropriate, but let's face it. People have been saying, passion will burn out and grit will be your only weapon. why not add bullets to that weapon diba??

So, amidst the intense workloads. Do you guys think having a harmless crush helps as secondary survival motivation here? Or is seeking romance in Bedan Law a clear violation of human rights and a waste of precious study hours?

Counsels, please advise. I wanna know your stories!

Are we really being heard?

Do the admin & D*O actually sympathize with the victims?

Or is it because they're living in high-rise condos and fancy villages that they expect all students to be privileged like that as well?

How about those living in the most affected areas, where it has been raining heavily for days now, those under orange & red alerts daily? Some are even forced to evacuate their homes, walk through floods, and deal with days without electricity or signal.

And yet, they still expect us to attend classes in a "well-lit and conducived" area, alone in a "quiet" room, without considering whether the student is even in a safe area, in an evacuation center, or struggling just to find a stable signal.

Please, not all of us are living in Alabang or Muntinlupa. Some of us live in the northern and western parts of Luzon, where PAGASA has placed areas under orange and red alerts FOR DAYS.

You must know this, especially since you accepted students from all over the country. Unless you really just don't c@re enough about your students as long as you're okay and enjoying your privileges under this "cuddle weather."

And what about the SL*G? Do they share the same mindset as the D*O? Have they forgotten that they are the ACTUAL STUDENT REPRESENTATION?

Do we feel represented?!?

I'm raising this concern here because if I directly raise it to them, for sure, mapagiinitan lang din ako, baka madamay pa grades ko.

I hope they hear us. I hope they realize that not all students are privileged. Some live in rural areas. Some are in places severely affected by the weather. And some are simply pushing through, spending their last few cents just to be part of this "highly reputed" law school.

We are students from different places and different circumstances. The least we ask is for the people making these decisions to remember that.

Book Tabs & Magnetic Bookmarks!

Hi everyone!

I'm a recent law school graduate who started making book tabs while I was still in law school because I got tired of constantly flipping through my codals and commentaries looking for the right page. What began as a personal project eventually grew into a small business.

The book tabs are made to help you quickly find provisions, cases, and important sections in your books.

I've also recently added magnetic bookmarks to the shop! They're designed to securely clip onto your books, reviewers, or planners so you can easily pick up where you left off.

If you're interested, you can check out my Shopee store:
shopee.ph/littlegieshop

If you're looking for a specific design that isn't listed, feel free to let me know—I also accommodate custom requests whenever possible.

Here are some photos of the book tabs and magnetic bookmarks. Thank you for taking the time to check them out, and I hope they can be useful in your law school journey. 😊
