Haven't played in years, basically starting from scratch, do golf balls actually matter yet, or should I just buy whatever's cheapest?

It's been years since I last played a round, so I'm treating myself as a total beginner again. Got my first proper set of clubs recently (still saving for wedges; budget golf is real). Plan is to hit the range every weekend until September, then play a round in mid-to-late September before the weather turns here in NY.

Now I need golf balls, and I'm lost. Some people say beginners should just buy used/cheap balls since we lose them anyway. Others say a softer ball helps you learn. Does it actually matter at my level, or is this a "any ball is fine, just go play" situation?

Also open to any advice on getting ready for that first round back; what do you wish you'd known?
