Why some of my mods were taken down, false DMCA strikes, and why I’m probably done modding
Hey guys, it's your lovely Younes again 😄
Wanted to post a quick explanation in case you noticed a couple of my mods vanished from the Workshop today.
A modder named Cosmic Voyage decided to hit my mods with DMCA copyright strikes.
Here’s the reality of the situation:
- His mods haven't worked in over a year. He kept giving people excuses (like not having enough RAM, then magically buying 32GB and still doing nothing), all while keeping donations open. He even told another modder that promising updates keeps the money rolling in.
- People just wanted working mods, so I took Donkey Crew’s current game files, reconfigured the tables from scratch, and uploaded working alternatives for the community.
- You can't copyright base game data tables that belong to the devs, but instead of fixing his own broken mods, he’s abusing Steam’s DMCA system to strike down working ones.
I already filed the legal counter-notices with Valve. Steam will automatically restore the mods in 10 to 14 days once his claim expires.
That said, modding is supposed to be a fun side hobby for the community. Having to deal with legal paperwork and someone trying to protect their donation hustle over basic config files is ridiculous. This kind of petty gatekeeping is a great way to push modders away, and frankly, dealing with this nonsense makes it not worth my time to keep making mods here.
Appreciate everyone who reached out with support.
