Which Indian institutions do you trust, and why?
We often talk about whether India's institutions are working well or badly.
But I'm more interested in a simpler question:
What actually makes an institution worthy of trust?
Think about institutions you've interacted with or observed — courts, schools and universities, police, bureaucracy, local governments, public hospitals, regulators, the armed forces, public-sector organisations, or others.
Which Indian institution do you trust, and what has it actually done to earn that trust?
Maybe it's because the institution:
- does what it is supposed to do consistently;
- treats people fairly;
- is competent;
- explains its decisions;
- remains accountable when it gets something wrong;
- responds to ordinary citizens;
- or maintains its independence from political or personal interests.
Or perhaps trust comes from something completely different.
And if there's an institution you don't trust: What would it need to change for you to trust it?
