A 15-year-old Bowie, Maryland, girl is being remembered by family and friends after she was fatally shot in what police describe as an accidental shooting over the weekend in Washington, D.C.
Journee Long, who had just turned 15 on May 28, died Saturday while visiting her best friend, according to authorities.
D.C. police said the two teens were alone inside an apartment belonging to the friend's godfather when they discovered an unsecured firearm. Investigators say the weapon was handled by the friend when it discharged, striking Long.
According to charging documents, after the shooting the friend placed the firearm back into a dresser drawer in the bedroom.
Police have charged the gun's owner, 33-year-old J'Von Green of Barnaby Street SE, with multiple firearm offenses, including possession of an unregistered weapon, possession of a firearm with a removed serial number, and failure to properly secure a firearm.
Green appeared in court for his initial hearing on Monday and is being held without bond pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for Thursday.
Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which authorities have described as a tragic accident highlighting the dangers of unsecured firearms in residential settings.

However, on January 12, 2025, a masked intruder entered the house through an unlocked door and stole $500,000 worth of items, including necklaces, charms, rings, bracelets, watches, and designer handbags. The legal filing accuses Thompson of negligence, claiming he failed to secure the door.

PEOPLE, saying, "I personally terminated Mr. Thompson's duties as a security guard following an incident where a mansion rented by Sexyy Red to celebrate her mother's birthday was burglarized by a lone subject who walked directly to an unlocked door while the party was out celebrating on yachts.
