What is a sweepstakes casino, and how does it actually work?

A sweepstakes casino looks and plays like an online casino, but it is built on a legal workaround, and understanding that workaround explains everything else about how these apps behave.
They use two currencies. Gold Coins are for play only and have no cash value. You can buy them, but you can never cash them out, so legally that side is “just for fun.” Alongside them you get Sweeps Coins, which are usually given free with Gold Coin purchases or by a mail-in request, and those can be redeemed for cash prizes once you clear a minimum. Because you are technically buying Gold Coins for entertainment and the Sweeps Coins arrive as a “free” sweepstakes entry, the operators argue the product is not gambling, which is how they run in most US states without a gaming license.
In practice, almost nobody mails in for free entries. People buy Gold Coin packages, play, and redeem the Sweeps Coins that come attached, so it functions like a casino with the same house edge, wrapped in sweepstakes language. I have tested more than 50 of these with my own money, and the dual-currency thing is not just paperwork: it affects whether you can cash out, how taxes work, and whether your losses are deductible.
I will break each of those pieces down in this Space. The fuller payout data, if you want it now, is here: We Tested 88 Sweepstakes Casinos: Who Actually Pays . Disclosure: my review site is affiliate-funded, ratings computed mechanically and not affiliate-weighted.
