Meet my bestie Violet

Violet is a 1 1/2 year old Boykin Spaniel Australian Shepherd mix. She loves long hikes in the mountains and is an avid bird watcher. She’s never seen a body of water she didn’t like, or a bunny she doesn’t want to chase. She‘s a wonderful boat captain, but a terrible shore fisherman. She can catch a ball better than most MLB players. Chicken poop connoisseur. She is truly the best companion I’ve ever had.

Did someone say "cottage?!"

My girl absolutely loves spending time at the cottage. She runs free, plays with other dogs, swims, hunts and lounges in the sun. She is the happiest dog ever at the cottage - she spends more time in the water than I do!

First "swim"

Shady, 13 weeks old and 14 pounds. He's like the Energizer Bunny and the Tasmanian Devil all rolled into an adorable bundle of irrepressible energy.

Boykin Spaniel - early retrieve training

This beautiful Boykin (June) is my first dog and I have the goal of training her to be a duck hunting dog as where we hunt is doesn’t ever get too cold. That and combined with her size (I used to be very scared of big dogs) made us settle on a Boykin. This is a rep from our very early retrieve training. I am eventually going to try the Smart Works program but she just turned 12 weeks so we’ve just been working on fetching and getting her to come back. 4-5 tosses at a time. This is a rep from earlier. What would yall say to change for her currently?

Cross posting in Boykin sub because this is actually Shady’s sibling from a couple post ago! This is Shady’s sister and weighed 12.19 pounds her last vet visit.

Shady, 3 months old

He is fearless and unstoppable but he does a good Recall. I know he's not reliable yet but we keep working on it.

Boykin Lab mix

I love Boykins, so when we saw a Boykin lab mix at the shelter we knew she was the one. There were a couple siblings and I wish I had the space for more. Wonderful size and personalities for sure ❤️

Is the breed actually aggressive or was I lied to?

Many years ago I found a breeder on facebook and told him I was interested in showing a boykin in AKC. I think the breeder i found was more interested in hunting homes so instead of telling me so he told me the breed is super aggressive and drivey like a jagdterrier. The entire breed. That directly contradicted what I read everywhere else but he was a breeder so what do I know. I ultimately passed on the breed and got skye terriers and I currently show them. Every time I see boykins I do feel a certain way, maybe I should've talked to more people. What is your experience with Boykins?

Bailey

Long time lurker, but here is Bailey. She was my aunt’s, who sadly passed away last month, dog. I adopted her when she started to decline, and she’s been in New England with me for three months now. Was a real trooper with the rough winter we had considering she’d never left South Carolina. Phenomenal dog. Total nutter outside but a couch potato when she comes in. Very sweet but independent too. Real head turner as well. Most people around here have never seen a Boykin.

12 weeks old

Shady just got home from the vet. He is 14 pounds and perfectly healthy. The vet commented on how muscular he is. He's on the thin side of normal.

PSA to all Boykin or just dog owners in general

Last week our 10 month old Boykin Spaniel, Goose, was bitten by a brown recluse spider right on his “bean bag” if you know what I mean. After it happened, he bit the spider and we believe he was also bitten several times in his mouth. It has been absolutely awful watching him go through this.

We’ve been back and forth to the vet multiple times over the last week. They kept him over the weekend on IV fluids and antibiotics, and they had to surgically remove dead and necrotic tissue from both his groin area and parts of his mouth. The poor little guy is still in a lot of pain and is struggling to eat and drink much.

We’ve tried everything we can think of at home — soft dog food, bone broth, syringes, turkey basters, hand feeding — just trying to get something in him to help him heal. Vet bills have already piled up more than we can really afford, but we’re doing everything we can for him because he means the world to us.

I mainly wanted to post this as a warning to other pet owners: please watch out for brown recluse spiders. I truly wouldn’t wish this on anybody. Seeing your dog hurt like this is heartbreaking.

If anyone has any tips or tricks that helped their dog eat or drink while recovering from mouth pain or surgery, I would really appreciate the advice. Please keep Goose in your thoughts while he fights through this
