Hi everyone,

I have an upcoming interview this Tuesday for an Assistant Crown Attorney position in Toronto, Ontario and I am hoping to get some practical advice from those who have gone through the process or have experience with Crown interviews.

The interview process includes an oral interview and a written assignment. I understand that the questions may focus on substantive criminal law, Crown discretion, ethics, Charter issues, charge screening, sentencing, disclosure, and possibly scenario-based judgment questions.

I am currently reviewing the Crown Prosecution Manual, key Charter principles, bail, sentencing, disclosure obligations, charge screening, and the general role of the Crown as a minister of justice rather than simply an advocate seeking convictions.

For those who have interviewed for Crown roles or similar prosecution positions:

What areas should I focus on most heavily in the final few days?

What kinds of scenario-based questions are commonly asked?

How should I structure answers to Crown discretion or ethics questions?

What should I expect from the written assignment?

Are there any common mistakes candidates make in these interviews?

Any practical tips for standing out as a candidate?

I would really appreciate any insight, especially from Ontario Crowns, former Crowns, defence counsel who have gone through the process, or anyone familiar with MAG interviews.

Thank you in advance!
