High altitude 5% grade up and down on a CRF300L

High altitude 5% grade up and down on a CRF300L

Hey Folks,

Looking for the lightweight unicorn bike that doesn't exist. Probably going to get a CRF300l non rally and modify it. I will mostly be riding around town or below 50mph, and main purpose is trails. For long trips it will be on the back of my truck or van.

My question is has anyone taken their 300 up and over mountain passes like Teton? It's 8400 at the top and a 5% grade on one side, 10% on the other side. I'm only asking because gas prices are so bad these days it would be nice to save if I need to commute over the pass.

I have ridden passes like this on a T700 and F800GS, but never on a smaller bike. Does it engine brake okay? Will I end up smoking the brakes or red lining up and down every day?

Pic of when teton pass collapsed for attention. I drove over it like 2 days before that picture. Whew.

Key won't go in ignition, plz help

Hey guys/girls. I have a 2024 non abs model and my key won't go in my ignition. I can only get about 1/3 of it in and It's blocked by something.... It's not the steering lock, I've tried both keys, my main key isn't bent, I've used graphite dry lube and nothing is working. This problem started about 6 weeks ago. I haven't dropped it or crashed, but last year I did go over in a deep puddle but the problem didn't exist until recently. (Yes I did an an oil change as soon as I got home 😆 ) I always leave the key in the bike since I store it inside and it's safe at work when I take it there. It would turn fine, once it was all the way in the ignition. But even when it was going in all the way it would go hard for the last 1/4 inch. Does anyone have a similar experience?? I really don't wanna spend 300-500 bucks on it at a dealer to replace it!! Please help

Custom seat

Got this puppy for my '25 L.
Old seat used to make my nuts and ass go numb, this one is slightly wider, slightly lower, has a nut channel, leather of my own choice, grippy leather on the sides and a sick logo.

Just wanted to tell somebody

CRF300L starter relay switch problem

Hey everyone,

Ran into a weird electrical issue with my CRF300L this morning and could use some help diagnosing it.

Turned the key, dash lit up like normal. But when I hit the starter button, the starter relay just clicks super fast (like a machine gun) and the lights dim heavily. There's definitely a massive voltage drop because the dash actually resets itself every time I try.

We tried to bump start it. It took a lot of effort but it finally fired up. However, it runs absolutely terrible—the idle is super rough, it won't hold RPMs properly, and the dash lights (including the ABS indicator) keep flashing like crazy.

What I've checked so far:

Battery: I thought it was a dead battery right away, but I tried swapping it with another known good battery and got the exact same result.

Fuses: Checked them all, none of them are blown.

Has anyone dealt with this before?

Any advice?

Thanks

Made some custom decals and some other small mods

Borrowed the cricut from my work and made these decals. I’ll see how they hold up, might remove some of the Honda wings. Let me know what you think or if you have any suggestions!

Adventure Navigation Tower

I consider this more of an 'Adventure Tower' as it's more of a low-profile arrangement that provides room for a phone or nav screen, and still rideable in traffic from a seated position compared to the taller up-in-your-face Dakar style.

The key difference to anything else I've seen is that this uses the factory headlight fairing assembly so no issues with compliance, expense of other 3rd party headlights or changes to factory wiring harness. This arrangement also relocates the indicators forward so their relative position to the headlight and visibility is retained.

I'm in Australia and we've only ever had the LED headlight version of the CRF300L since it was release in 2021 but from what I gather the halogen headlight looks similar but the mounting is completely different so this wouldn't work for that 300L variant.

I'd previously made a version of the lower dash panel to mount my particular USB power socket I was wanting to mount, and then also made option for switches etc across the bottom for future accessories like heated grips, spot lights etc.

The navigation screen mounted back on the bars wasn't working for me and had tried looking at a few options around mounting it above the speedo display but I was also running the GP Kompozit windscreen. Then I had the thought that if I could relocate the headlight and move the front fairing forward then it would create enough space for a dash area above the speedo. This does mean that my GP Kompozit screen doesn't work on the bike any longer but it wasn't particularly costly and has worked well on the stock bike arrangement as a initial option for the first few thousand km.

It's designed but I still need to make up the windshield for testing, however the rest of the current prototype arrangement has turned out well, and the extra bit of height to the headlight and top of the fairing already provides good protection to the chest and is limited difference to any visibility. The fixed screen protruding up behind the fairing supports the windshield and also gives protection to the nav screen if/when a windshield isn't fitted.

Next step will be to work up the design for the main tower bracket structure in sheet metal pieces and I'm thinking to base it on 1.6mm stainless.

Stay with full synthetic or go to synthetic blend?

Getting time to do an oil change and I'm not really sure what I want to go with Honda HP4S again or change to my prefered synthetic blend. I ride it like I stole the it and with Iowa weather being more bi polar than my ex, I'm leaning more towards the HP4S since it's supposedly able to handle high heat and flow better in cold, but it's expensive af and not really sure if it's worth it.

This is my toolkit

I only carry the tools required for the jobs I know how to do. The most important for me is being able to deal with flats. I have used these exact tools to change tires at home and to repair one flat on a trip. I used the patch kit that time and I’m still riding on the same tube a year later. No problem.

More detail: The Motion Pro metric tool (black case next to Leatherman) can be used to remove 8, 10, 12 & 14 mm bolts, #2 & #3 Phillips screws, small & medium straight-slot screws and 5 & 6 mm hex bolts. I plan on ordering an additional 3 & 4 mm combo hex bit for it now that I have a need for those sizes. It also includes a 1/4" and 3/8" socket driver and 10 mm & 12 mm 1/4" drive sockets. I've added a 16 mm socket and 14-16 mm hex adapter for the front axel.

The round blue thing is a 3/8"-drive adapter for the 24 mm combo lever. I really wish the other combo lever had a 17 mm box wrench instead of the 12/13 mm. If it did, I wouldn't need the adjustable wrench.

Besides pliers and a blade, the Leatherman has a couple of smaller Phillips and flathead bits…and a bottle opener, which the Motion Pro tool also has.

Can anyone help answer some questions I have about the FMF exhaust?

I just bought a 2021 with a full FMF exhaust on it. I tried to search for one as if I was going to buy one and they don't really seem to exist outside of ebay. Om the 550 Performance website in that table he has it listed as "Thai FMF Clone" and he has the little "-" symbol under it indicating that the FMF actually provides worse performance than the stock exhaust. What is going on? Is it not a "real" FMF exhaust? Is it a knockoff? Does it suck? This is literally my first bike and I know very little but I've ridden the bike and I don't think it sounds bad. I can understand putting a fake FMF sticker on some knockoff exhaust but this thing has FMF stamped on the side all legit looking. How fake is this thing and how bad is this thing and what am I missing?
