Creaking/squeaking "bed spring" noise under hard acceleration - CRF300L (2000m-3,200 km)
I’m having a weird issue with my CRF 300L (it only has 3,200 km / ~2,000 miles on it) and could use some advice.
The Problem:
Whenever I accelerate hard in 1st and 2nd gears, I hear a loud creaking/squeaking noise. It sounds exactly like an old rusty bed spring. I also hear the exact same noise when riding over very rocky terrain.
When it started:
This issue started right after I took the bike for a ride on a sandy beach.
What I've ruled out so far:
Not the suspension linkage: If the bike is stationary and I push down hard on the rear end to compress the shock, there is absolutely no squeak. It only happens under load/torque or lateral stress.
Not the chain sliders: The bike is practically new (3,200 km), so the sliders aren't worn out. By the way, I completely cleaned and relubed my front sprocket and chain.
Has anyone experienced this issue before? Where should I check? Thanks in advance.
Prepping for the big bore upgrade need some help
Hello,
Like the title says, prepping g for the big bore upgrade. Have the bike mostly torn down, to the point the airbox is out. Going to do all the airbox mods as well.
The service manual is…… ok? I guess? I think they assume you go through the entire book in order or something, for example, I skipped to the airbox section, tje manual showed only one bolt to remove on the battery box side. I know I had to remove all the fender pop pins and like 4 bolts in the battery box and those were in other steps.
So I am trying to see what else needs to come off the bike to disassemble it as little as possible. Couple questions.
I know the throttle body has to come off, do I have to unplug the electrical connectors , throttle cables, etc, and remove it from the bike entirely? The velocity stack seems easier to put on the throttle body by taking it off.
The right exhaust stud needs to come off, this I know.
The radiator, I have to drain, and remove it? Are there other brackets or something to remove on that side?
On the opposite side where the ecu is, I believe removing the bracket will be necessary, but not the abs equipment, correct?
Lastly, I did the pair delete already, I had thought about removing the charcoal canister, but the set up for it seems more complicated, looks like it might even have an electrical connector on it? On my t7 this was an easy delete, just a couple hoses but the setup on the rally is more convoluted.
Thanks!
Mike
Suspension questions for people who have upgraded
I have a 250 rally and I ride off-road about once a week. It’s also my only and primary vehicle. I hit Croom mc area (same area Carson brown has been riding his 300 rally and a bunch of other bikes) it’s rutted to hell and all whoops. Will suspension do much to help me loft over this stuff ? I only weigh like 140 lbs but I have to double over everything unless there’s a clear spot for some air and a flat landing. Basically I have to ride these trails like I’m playing that old game flappy bird; constantly on the clutch and then gassing as hard as I can in second on the little uphill part of each whoop…. Getting farther forward sends the back end all the way up out of control and there’s not enough power to lift the front wheel. Any comments from anyone who rides rough trails would be appreciated. I average 20-22 mph through the trees but always ride solo so have no idea if that’s fast but I see the dirtbike ripppp over whoops so just curious about opinions
Great beginner bike
First real season riding and Ive been loving it. Had my fair share of small falls but bikes been great and got me to some cool spots. Just need to find others to ride with now.
Liked my crf so much I bought another one like a month later
Loving this bike took it on some pretty nasty trails during a rain fall what a bike. I bought one previously but then this came up for sale through a friend and it already has most of the stuff I wanted to do to mine and half the kilometres on the bike.
Finally did some damage
Love this bike, it’s been through shit and I’ve never had an issue.
This time is different, wondering if anyone can chime in.
Dropped the bike on the trails and bent the shifter pretty bad, it was both twisted and bend against the engine case.
I had limited means to try and bend it back, a stick, and my boots to stomp on it to try and straighten it.
I got it bent back and tried to continue out of this swampy area but it would only shift up - wouldn’t shift down. I believe the bending back process did the damage not the initial drop.
Ultimately I had to call for help my first time ever for a rescue as I was stuck in 6th gear. Just barely managed to drag it out of the bush swamp and up some hills before dark. Took everything I had pulling / pushing it through the mud.
I plan on opening up the bike to see what’s going on but wondering if this has happened to anyone and what the most likely culprits might be or what to look for.
Ride safe!
IDBDR day 3!
Doing north to south. Combined the first two sections in the north on day one. Made it to Lolo this afternoon for a late lunch. Heading to Darby for a hotel night. I’m having a great time!
Bike cranks but won’t start
I bought a used 300l two days ago, I’ve ridden a tw200 for 6 years and decided it was time for an upgrade.
I rode the bike before buying it, started first try then, ran great, zero issues. Rolled the bike out of tue garage yesterday to give it a wash, finished the wash and tried to start it.
Bike would not start, it’s cranked and cranked and cranked until the battery died. It did back fire once but never even sputtered. Replaced the battery today and it just kept turning over until it died again. New battery is now on the charger.
I ordered a new spark plug, but any other suggestions of things to check would be super helpful! I’m pretty heart broken right now because I just moved half way across the country for a new job, and I missed riding so much I spent most of what I had left on this bike to hopefully have a little fun up here.
SELL CRF300L FOR DRZ4S???
Hey guys! I'm a new rider here! I bought the CRF300L and I am pretty happy with my purchase but I am beginning to think that this is not the best choice. There are a lot of stuff I would like to tweak if I am to keep it. Like ECU flash, suspension upgrade definitely, exhaust upgrade, add a bigger tank and maybe change the breaks cause they aren't very reliable. All of that added up I think it would have been cheaper and better to directly buy a drz4s and appreciate a bigger displacement engine on top of that. But now that I have already bought the crf is it worth selling it to buy a drz? I wouldn't want to keep it any longer without atleast changing the rear suspension. Anyone done this themselves? Should I just suck up my loses and buy the better bike or do you think moding the crf makes it almost as good? Thanks for your opinions.
btw I love the dualsport category and am not interested in bigger bikes for the moment like a T7. I would like to have one small lightweight bike for around town and some offroading or light adventuring and eventually buy a bigger bike to travel further and longer and keep both for either purpose.

Clutch and break levers upgrade
I'm looking for some levers that can be adjustable to make them closer to my fingers. Would appreciate your advice on which ones I should get.
CRF 300 L Sitzbank
Hallo zusammen ,
Ich habe nun eine 10 tägige Tour mit etwa 3000 km ,
Davon etwa 500km offroad ,hinter mir .
Measuring Chain Slack
So after owning two CRF Rallys (a 250 and 300), I finally read the owners manual recently on how to measure my chain slack correctly.
Mabe it is just me, but I had no idea the little slot in the chain guard is actually meant to help measure the slack! All that being said, I couldn't find a tiny ruler that worked for that spot, so I've started making/selling one specifically for our bikes. Just a PSA if anyone else would like one! https://stonemoto.ca/shop/p/chain-slack-ruler
Carrying extra fuel
Hey everyone,
Very new to the dual sport trail riding, but wanting to adventure more.
I'm looking to carry extra fuel on my CRF300L, but a bit reluctant to buy a Acerbis tank as I don't want to modify the bike to much to void warranty.
Does anyone carry extra fuel, and if so, how much and where is it mounted?
I like the idea of mounting a fuel bottle on the L/H side of the bike.
Thanks,
John
Power issues
Having issues with the power delivery of the bike while riding, it revs really high, doesnt really get into "drive," to speak aka any power to the wheel while riding.
All occured after I rode it super hot after it boiled over on a technical ride hopping some logs and dumping it a few times. The thermostat popped up on dash and I topped the coolant with water as it was low to ride home.
Since that boil over ride the fan hasnt came on at all and the power delivery is lacking and rev very high in the RPMs.
I drained and emptied the water from radiator and overflow, filled with new Honda coolant, checked for leaks throughout.
Main issues:
-Revs high
-Fan doesnt come on
-Radiator slightly bent inwards
Possible culprits could be radiator issue with the dent, charcoal filter in tank, and fan relay switch broken?
Frame Damage and Fix
Tore and buckled the frame at the Footpeg hitting a hidden rock while riding.
Took it to my fab guy he fixed it, braced and gusseted both sides.
New to me 2021 300L - Can I change to the 2025 rad fan and grille?
First rides on the bike, and I do notice it's a bit toasty on my right leg.
I saw the marketing for the 2025 mentions the " updated cooling system with a redesigned radiator fan and grille "
I'm looking at part numbers at Partzilla, and I see that the radiator grille is now 19034-K1T-EM0 ( was 19034-K1T-E10 ) , and the fan shroud shows two part numbers: 19015-K1T-ER1 or 19015-K1T-E11 ( same as the 2021 )
The motor changed from 19080-K1T-E11 to 19080-K1T-EB1
The fan blades have not changed ( 19020-KVZ-631 )
Has anyone swapped these over? Did anything else change - like the shroud ?
More importantly - does this actually help ?
I saw a thread elsewhere where someone just swapped in a bigger SPAL fan, and fixed their overheating issues ( Asian jungle riding).
Thanks!
46t sprocket
Just went up to a 46 on the rear, stock 14 up front. Was hesitant about changing it so much but it is so worth it. Cruises 70 no problem and gets up to 80 easily to pass. Power feels much more usable all around. Rips up hills now. Just flipped the chain guard upside down and cut a little notch out the top plastic. Went with 108 links- my wheelbase is slightly shorter but still have adjustment both ways. I would recommend this to anyone!
What hose is this?
I noticed a hose not connected to anything on the left side engine above the foot peg. Traced it past the rear suspension coil and it appears to be a drain hose coming out with the other drain hoses. After doing some reading I thought it might be from the evaporator canister, but my version doesn’t have the canister. I thought it was maybe pre installed for an evap can even though my bike doesn’t have the system, so I mistakenly pulled it right out and now I’m thinking it was definitely for something. I have had the fuel tank off, but it doesn’t appear to be long enough to reach the tank nipples. Coolant drain? The coolant overflow reservoir has both its hoses connected..
