I built a debate app for civility. Users wanted to be toxic.

So I’m obsessed with debate, I’ll be honest, and I’ve noticed, as I’m sure we all have, that discourse in recent years has gotten really toxic.

It’s either a dogpile, throwing insults, being condescending, I don’t need to rehash what I imagine we all already know.

I built an app where people could swipe on topics, get matched with someone who disagrees, and get a score on their civility. The idea was that if you’re always an asshole, your shitty civility score would follow you and no one would want to talk to you.

I added a feature in passing called toxic mode that did not judge your civility. Spew your venom, no holds barred.

That was the idea.

Every time I got an install on the app, every single user immediately jumped into toxic mode. Out of 100+ downloads, not a single person wanted to have a civil discussion. They wanted the messy version. The heated version. The version that felt more like a chaotic internet argument than a polite debate club.

So I stopped fighting it and built a lightweight browser version where you can just pick a topic and jump in:

https://thinklavender.com/ragebait

The goal is still to get people talking to people they disagree with. Maybe the first step is not making everyone perfectly civil. Maybe it is just getting them in the same room.

And if that room has to be a little toxic to get people through the door, so be it.

Would love feedback on the idea and whether this feels like something people would actually try.

Alright i got fully admitted in my grad program with NO financial assistance. I’m hesitate to take out loans bc im still unsure about my career as an English Professor in a CA CC.
I recently came across a dual masters + teaching credential program that is more of my calling, at least job market wise, it is hard to get tenure here in CA!!

I haven’t paid / taken loans out for my grad program, classes doing start until AUG, if i withdraw would it be on my record/ what would happen?

Any response is good, i’m a first gen student with no one to talk to about this any help is appreciated!!

Commute on Train

Hey everyone,
Does anyone take the bus/train from LA area to campus? I’m deciding whether I want to drive or take the bus. I’m planing on studying abroad in January so idk if it will be worth it to buy a car. I’ve been checking my commute time from my place and it says 2ish hrs on the train/bus. Just want to know people’s experience, I feel like i’m going to regret it since it’s a long ride. If I do this, i’ll probably just go to campus twice a week so that it doesn’t get tiring. But any advice or suggestions help. Thanks

Questions regarding ALEKS math placement test

Hello, I am an incoming mechanical engineering major hoping for some insights regarding the ALEKS math placement test. Is it true that a 680+ sat math score can exempt you from taking the test? if so, does that apply for all majors or only non STEM major. Despite already sending my scores to CSULB I'm still getting frequent emails notifying me that I haven't taken the ALEKS yet, and since the deadline is July 10th, I figure some of you guys can help me out. Thanks

Anyone scheduled for the July 8th Soar? Wanted to get acquainted before I go :)

I’m a creative writing major with the anticipation to add Computer Science as a minor (I requested and took the Aylek exam ahead of time). I’m 28, love to play Souls video games and make books (literally, making the paper, binding, etc), a sucker for dark humor, and you could catch me doing Yoga by the bluff 🤟🏾🤟🏾

Who else is going? I’m down to making new acquaintances as we all start our new journey here

Student loan forgiveness

Has anyone from CSULB applied and gotten their loans discharged under borrowers defense?
I got a degree in criminology and criminal justice cause I wanted to be a cop and thought I needed it. Turns out the degree is beyond useless and I was misled about its importance and necessity.
I heard it’s rare for public universities to forgive student loans tho

applying for nursing spring 2027, am I cooked?

I didn't think I'd be making a reddit post about this, but I'm tripping pretty hard about this right now. I've got a 3.9 overall GPA, 4.0 science gpa, and have been working for about 8 months as an ER tech. One thing is that I got 2Q on the CASPER and I think that might be enough to sink me. I don't think I'm as socially inept as that score says I am so if I even land an interview I'd be happy. I'm also local to the area if that boosts my points at all.

CSU BRAGS, WHILE THE PAY SERIOUSLY LAGS BEHIND THE ECONOMY. WORKERS SUFFER WHILE MANAGEMENT PLUNDERS THE COFFERS.

Teamsters File New Unfair Labor Practice Charge as CSU Continues Bad Faith Bargaining

https://teamsters2010.org/wp-content/uploads/6.26.2026\_FILED-\_T2010-ULP-Charge-CSU-Refusal-to-Bargain-LR.pdf

Teamsters Local 2010 filed yet another Unfair Labor Practice complaint with the State Labor Board on Friday, June 26, after CSU continued its bad faith bargaining during our latest bargaining session on June 23.

During that session, CSU failed to respond to our Union’s salary proposal and continued to refuse to negotiate multiple years of guaranteed raises. CSU again indicated that they will not commit to guaranteed raises for our members until there is a signed State budget. Such a stance undermines the entire collective bargaining process and is absurd given the substantial multi-year agreements countless other employers across California have agreed to, including contracts that CSU has agreed to in the past. CSU increasingly stands alone as the worst public sector employer in California even as it stands to receive hundreds of millions in new, ongoing funds in next year’s State budget.

Workers are fed up with CSU's disrespect and bad faith bargaining. CSU can afford to be fair with workers, but instead only hands out raises to overpaid executives while zeroing out workers who make the system run. Teamsters are leading the fight for fair treatment of CSU workers, and we are ready to do whatever it takes until we win."

Jason Rabinowitz

Secretary-Treasurer, Teamsters Local 2010

Will the CSU system honor their obligations that they agreed to?

The new California State Budget was approved and the CSU system received a promised increase. Question is ; will the CSU honor our contract and compensate the staff. STOP THE STEAL. Skilled Trades workers are having their wages stolen by the CSU for the last 366 days.

Is this good news or more fake promises?

What say you Mildred?

July 1, 2026

Dear CSU Colleagues,

On Monday evening, Governor Newsom signed the 2026-27 California Budget Act into law. The final budget contains the funding levels for the CSU first proposed by the governor in January and reflected in the administration’s May Revision.

The budget is positive news and a powerful affirmation of the administration’s and legislature’s belief in the CSU – and we are extremely grateful for their ongoing support of our mission and the transformational power of higher education.

The funding levels will allow the CSU to continue to drive California’s workforce and economy, and advance the implementation of CSU Forward, the most ambitious and forward-focused systemwide strategic plan in the history of the CSU. Additionally and more specifically, this support will better position the CSU to manage rising mandatory costs and focus on other key priorities, such as employee compensation, enrollment growth and facilities improvements.

Again, I offer the governor and legislature my sincere gratitude for their support. And I thank the many of you from throughout the CSU community who participated in our systemwide advocacy this budget cycle – your efforts are deeply appreciated and were impactful.

I wish you an enjoyable summer and, as always, thank you for everything you do for the CSU and the students we serve.

 Warmly,

 Mildred García, Ed.D.

Chancellor

On Campus Jobs?

I know this has already been asked but how are ya'll getting on campus jobs? I feel like I go onto Csulb's career links and they have nothing new for on campus work. Not a lot of Student Assistant jobs either which seems to be the big thing students will talk about.

Job hunting has been really tough for me and while I'm searching all over Long Beach for work, on campus seems to be my best chance cause they will be more understanding of my schedule. :P

Looking for a roommate!

Hi everyone! my roommate and I are looking for another roommate to fill a room! The lease is month to month and you'd be looking at paying 925 + utilities (roughly 40 to 50 dollars). We're based in signal hill and its about a 15 minute drive to campus with traffic. If you have any questions please hmu! My roommate and I are super friendly and tidy! the photos are of my room, the room layout is just flipped for the empty room!
