Family, family, family. Some thoughts so far

Some thoughts after finishing episode 6.

I've wished for logic to jump into this family's decision making each episode, so far it's not been a priority for me as I'm just floating on and enjoying the series for what it is.
However, if there isn't a restraining order against Neveah and some more interest from the police in episode 7, I'm going to be quite disappointed.
Still waiting for the death of Neveah's mother to be mentioned.
Still waiting for the big bad "what did they do?"
Still waiting for Crystal to give the Bowdens (or the show) ANYTHING.
Need some answers stat so I can continue to enjoy this beautiful train wreck!

As for Zack being Max's biological son, no. It has been clear as day for awhile now that Zack has been groomed into abandoning his biological family, and been drugged into believing himself to be Adam. I hate that kid, which means the actor is doing a great job.

Natalie though… Someone posted early on in this sub, linking Santeria orishas and legend to the plot and characters of Cape Fear, and it was so fascinating and well-put.
In the post, they made connections to the religion and the "daughters" of the show, providing a what-if scenario of:
Neveah believes herself to be Max's daughter, but infact is not.
Natalie is the true biological daughter to Max.
And what these revelations could create between both girls and the families.
That is the only direction I would want to see the showrunners taking us with all the ambiguity they've given Natalie's background.
And if not that, then I hope they just use it as what it is; a source of tension that will hopefully reveal itself soon as just that and nothing more!
The possibility of both Natalie and Neveah being his children, just feels too cheap to sell. And would kinda piss me off. Incest has had a rise in TV shows for the shock value and I'm over it.

It's been drilled into our heads that Max is wanting to recreate his family, give a family to the gods, etc etc etc.
If Max wants HIS family back, that would imply a mother and son.
He's successfully gained Adam's spirit back, and Zack has gone "to the gods," so to speak.
Who is mother?

If Max does intend to give a family to the gods, will it be the possession of the Bowden family partially, or in whole?

Is there a chance Max doesn't know all this work Neveah's been putting in?
Specifically living in the walls, the AI, the killing of her mother?
Part of me wonders if he knows ALL that she's been up to.
He obviously wants to see Anna and Tom suffer, as he expressed at dinner with them, but it's so painfully vague the way Anna and Tom have been constantly repeating "you know what you've done!" "you know what you're doing!" "you need to stop!" and the like, without EVER revealing details.
Purposeful so that we don't know what Max does/doesn't know?

It seems clear that the phone call Max made was to his dad, and that Crystal is his half-sister.
Would love to see what's she's been up to.

The exposition dumps have been heavy throughout while still not providing enough forward momentum considering we are halfway through the series. This episode was a fun ride but like a roller coaster it only brought us right back to where we began. Le sigh.
I would love to see the next episode buckle down, answer some of this bs (heavy-handed or smart clues and drops idc at this point), just give us something new.

Something I noticed ( s1E1-6)

>! In Season 1 , Episode 1 Max's girlfriend is on the phone with Max who is trying to convince her to commit suicide. The girlfriend is not alone. There is someone there with her guiding her, helping her. Who do you think the person was? Do you think that was Nevaeh?

Zach plays games online with his friends. He barely hangout. He had a girlfriend but she broke up with him after he posted her picture online. Zach claims it was an accident. He might have accidentally sent it to one guy online. He doesn't know. Is it possible that Nevaeh got the picture of his girlfriend somehow, and she is the one who sent the pictures out in order to force a breakup between Zack and his girlfriend so she can get closer to Zack.

Prior to Zach going to meet his online girlfriend Nevaeh he seems to have developed an unhealthy fixation on Max 's dead son. Does anyone else find that odd? Is it possible that Max is one of Zach's friends online?

What have you noticed? What have you noticed?

Max's Phone Call

During the first part of the episode when Max is on a phone call, I think the other end of the call is Ron Perlman. He's supposed to be in this and he kept saying "Old Man." It's what I thought. I could be wrong but that's what I'm thinking.

Now I need to figure out what his role in this series would be. 🤔

Latest Episode - That “Room”

It says I can’t put “spoiler” in the title of the post, but there also isn’t a flair available for “spoiler” on my post…so that seems super odd. I guess I’ll just use “discussion” as flair and say

SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE LATEST EPISODE

That space in the house Tom fell into at the end of the episode….what the heck??? That space was fully enclosed, no door to it. Why would they have framed in and sealed up a space that large in the middle of their house?? Also, the space between the walls being wide enough for people to walk through is so creepy 🙈 Zach is such a creepy creep, obviously the actor does a great job because I honestly don’t like him being on screen solely because he weirds me out and he’s so unpredictable.

Also, now that we know how linked up Zach and Nevaeh have been - since she has clearly been living there a long time - do we think Zach knew all along when she was messing around with his sister’s head?

Undisclosed theory on AI voice use

Haven’t seen this discussed here yet — but with the introduction of AI voice manipulation, and the obsession with Max that other characters have…. has anyone considered the fact that the call at the start of the series (telling the mistress to finish the job and kill herself) was Naveah or someone else using AI to be Max?

CapeFear-Ep6

I had a feeling before that Zack might actually be Max's son and I even shared that theory.

After this episode my suspicions are even stronger. The hints felt too deliberate to ignore and I'm now leaning even more toward Zack really being Max's son.

What do you think? 🤔

Max Cady is Evil Monte Cristo

So this is basically a dark retelling of Count of Monte Cristo. Edmond Dantès/Max Cady is betrayed by people he trusted; gets imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit and loses everything; meets an old priest in prison who teaches him a valuable secret; somehow gets out and comes back in town with a new fortune and a dark, mysterious aura; gets back in touch with the people responsible for putting him away who are now esteemed members of society, and endeavors to destroy their lives; complete with poisonings, some secret lovechild drama, a son turning against his parents, and a lesbian daughter.

In Count of Monte Cristo, the prosecutor knew he was innocent, but destroyed the evidence because it also contained some information about his own family that would have jeopardized his future political career. This Cape Fear adaptation could be hinting at one more parallel plot point here, with Tom's dark secret about his dead brother which hasn't been explored much yet. Anna musing about "overcorrections" also suggests feelings of guilt for deliberately putting away a man she knew was innocent, and spending the rest of her career trying to atone for it. She doesn't seem to really know about Tom's brother though, so who knows what her motivations could have been?

Best Show on Right Now

I haven’t enjoyed and been this involved in a show since Bates Motel but this one is doing it. Javier Bardem - amazing. I personally think the actors portraying the kids are both doing a fantastic job. Neveah is creepy and they picked the perfect person for that role. 10/10 show for me.

a genius show

As a former school psychologist, I can tell you that this show's depiction of wealthy families and their dark secrets is absolutely, insanely on point.

During my time working at a school for privileged kids, I met the exact same boy and girl featured in this show. I've met the exact same type of mother and father, right down to their facial expressions.

Of course, the drama uses a trippy, LSD-like cinematic filter to exaggerate everything - from the characters' behavior to the vivid color palette, but at its core, it is completely on point.

The parents fake stability, righteousness, and emotional intelligence as a facade and a form of "soft power" against the naive and innocent. Meanwhile, the children instinctively sense who their parents truly are, acting as a mirror for everything that is broken within them and their dark secrets.

I notice many comments criticizing how absurdly the family behaves. Yet, having mediated numerous cases, I have seen family dynamics far more ridiculous than those depicted in this show.

Cape Fear is an autopsy of people escaping their own pain and instead inflicting it on others through dominance and control. This psychological burden is also precisely what connects the show to its psychedelic tone - it mirrors the altered, paranoid state of mind that comes with living a lie.

In this light, Max Cady is a psychological scalpel used to perform that autopsy.

S01E06 Plot Questions

Possible spoilers ahead!
Feel free to raise others but two questions I have:

-Was Nevaeh/Amber actually present in Natalie’s room? Probably not critical to know but info at the end seems to raise the question. What say ye?

-Was it Zach who, ahem, “fixed” the tea? I think so now, given his contemplation of glass and his smile right before drinking, as well as how he then guzzles it. But Zach has some odd affects anyway so not 100% sure.

Javier Bardem/Max Cady style

Been watching this show, and loving the way he dresses as Max Cady throughout. Not entirely sure it’s something I can generally pull off, but I’d like to try. Anyone watching, what kind of style is that? Any suggestions on where to get similar style clothing, without it costing too too much? Thanks!

Ep 6 - Possum

NOW we’re talking!!! This episode was a breath of fresh air. It seemed like the previous episodes were fillers and dragging a bit. This episode revealed soooo many things that were needed and now it’s starting to make perfect sense. Can’t wait for ep 7

Earnest enjoyment vs. Hate-watching

A lot of the reviews and discussion of this show that I've seen seem to touch on its campiness, pulpiness or silliness in one way or another. So I'm curious: on a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your own earnestness as a viewer of this show?

1 = I think this show is ridiculous and stupid, and I'm purely hate-watching it to marvel at its sheer absurdity.

10 = This is a truly thrilling, unironically compelling drama that sits comfortably alongside other "prestige TV" shows of the streaming era.
