Jamaica's music, athletics, food and culture have given the country an extraordinary global reputation. We have produced world-class sprinters, musicians and entertainers whose influence extends far beyond this small Caribbean island.

Those accomplishments matter.

They should be celebrated.

But they should not become a substitute for development.

At first glance, the question could easily be interpreted as criticism of national pride. But read more carefully, and the argument is actually more complicated—and, in my view, more important.

A country can be worth loving while still being in desperate need of improvement.
