Those accomplishments matter.
They should be celebrated.
But they should not become a substitute for development.
And they certainly shouldn't become a reason to dismiss criticism.
A recent discussion on Reddit posed a provocative question: “Am I the only one a little exhausted by Jamaican patriotism?”
At first glance, the question could easily be interpreted as criticism of national pride. But read more carefully, and the argument is actually more complicated—and, in my view, more important.
A country can be worth loving while still being in desperate need of improvement.
That is where the conversation about Jamaican patriotism becomes much more interesting.
