Renuka Devi - Kannada Bangala

Renuka Devi - Kannada Bangala

Please listen to Renuka Devi, a soulful composition by Dikshithar in Kannada Bangala - a solitary reaper in songs! The arohana and avarohana are as follows:

Aa:S R1 M1 G3 M1 D1 P D1 S
Av: S D1 P M1 G3 R1 S

DKJ's rendition:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2V7-oq86nI&list=RDu2V7-oq86nI&start_radio=1

The laddered swaras in the arohana resemble a meandering river, and the lilts of the layas are beautifully rhythmic!

MDPD is one of the leitmotifs of the raga and for more theoretical information, you can refer to the SSP treatise: https://guruguha.org/kannada-bangala-malahari-conjoined-twins/

What is your pet peeve in Carnatic music?

What is one thing that irritates you about how people sing?

For me it is singers who babble into the mic. In tamil it is called "olarardhu", i.e. blabbering some nonsense and not speaking clearly

There is 0 spashtam in their voice. Many "mahaans" of Carnatic cannot even sing the sahityas clearly and it annoys me to the T. It sounds like they are vomiting into the mic.

Even more, are people who cannot pronounce what they are singing!

"Maha Ganapathim" sounds like "Makhaaaa Ghanabathiuuuuuuu" 🤢🤢 Sounds like a spring going off. Not only are you saying it wrong. but you are taking away the beauty of the song.

If you cant respect the meaning lyrics dont bother singing the song 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️

Which Carnatic musician are you obsessed with?

Mine is TM Krishna. What bhavam he brings to the performances! Pure abstract artistry. Favourite songs on yt are Gadavajana and todi rtps, Endaro, Manavyala, kalyani, kamboji rtp, Subhapantuvrali rtp, Ranga pura vihara, janaki pate, sabhapathikku, pagaivanukku arulvai, and many more

What I like about him is that he takes the bhaava of the raaga to its maximum grandeur or emotion. He doesn't try to make it overly melodious alone. Ranga pura vihara is an example. Many singers make it merely melodious and its grandness is lost.

I'm aware of the criticism about his sahitya issues, but since I am also weak in it hasn't affected me so far.

I have started carnatic classes because of his influence, To be able to enjoy the depths of carnatic music.

Which musician has influenced you like that? Also what's your opinion on TMK- THE SINGER!

Priya Sisters : What Happened?

Priya Sisters, Haripriya and Shanmukhapriya once dominated the Chennai Sabhas and concerts abroad. What happened to them in the recent years? They're barely giving any kutcheris except the Ragamalika TV Margazhi Utsavam and they haven't performed even there for the past two years.

Not-on-your-favourites-list ragas

What ragas are less preferred by you? Ragas with vivadi swaras (e.g. Sucharitra, which can sound dissonant), or some ragas which you feel are overused?

Off topic, Ilayaraja sir managed to cobble up a musical melody from Rishabhapriya (listen to Kaali Perungaya Dabba)!

Any online Carnatic vocal coaches?

I want to learn vocal Carnatic music (I did some offline - 5-6 classes) but it’s difficult for me to follow it through since I’m in hometown right now. My budget is 450 per class since I want to do atleast 8 classes a month, I don’t specifically have needs for 1 on 1 since I’ve learnt music in a group so I don’t mind, just the group needs to be small since I’m starting out and don’t really have some amazing talent I have a very basic voice. Please do correct me if I’m asking for too much. I would like some teachers with a good amount of experience since what I have noticed I specifically need more attention in class than others since I take time picking up on things, that’s why two classes a week is needed for me (I will practice too but I feel like if I don’t get regular lessons I lose motivation to practice).

Looking for participants for my research on Indian classical music, memory and emotions

Hi everyone,

I’m currently pursuing my MSc in Clinical Psychology, and as someone who has also grown up learning Carnatic music, I’ve always been curious about the way music shapes us beyond performance, such as if it improves our attention, memory, mood regulation, etc.

I’m currently researching that in my dissertation and I’m looking for vocalists trained in India forms of music between the age 18-35 as participants.

The criteria is atleast three years of formal learning and engagement in practice.

It will take you around 15 minutes to complete the survey, which will consist of a computerised memory task and a few short questionnaires.

It would genuinely mean a lot to me to have musicians from this community take part in the research. I really hope this study can contribute, even in a small way, to understanding Indian classical music not only as an art form, but also as how it contributes to well being :)

Link to the survey has been attached

Best headphones for listening to Carnatic music

Hi all. In your opinion, what is the best headphones or earbuds that offer the best Carnatic (vocal) music listening experience. I know that recording quality, audio mix etc varies a lot between various carnatic music recordings and audios available today. But just wanted to get everyone's opinion. Personally, I hate the bass heavy headphones that are commonly available today, for me the vocals and violin sound too muffled and overall it is quite jarring.

PS - I am a long term student of the art, not an active performer, never will be.

Looking to find other Carnatic Beginners with Prior Music Experience

Hello everyone,

I’ve been wanting to get into Carnatic music for a long time now. I am a Telugu American who is having experience and training in Western Classical music and Jazz. I’m looking to make a foray into Carnatic Music and I was wondering if there are some other people who are in my position who would like to work together to learn theory together. I’ve been having trouble understanding Thāla specifically how to count it with the hands as my experience with western classical music makes the counting of rhythm less in depth. As such I was hoping I could get a description of what Nadaka and Jaati are and how they relate to Thāla. This far, my working theory has been to think of Nadaka as the number of beats per measure with Jaati setting the base count of the laghu (my assumption is that because laghu is variable, you can mess around with different laghu counts within a single Thāla to create more complex rhythms and all). I’ve also transcribed the Jaati syllables into notes so I have an idea of what is being subdivided but I still find it hard to apply this transcription to Carnatic music when I’m counting. All of this to say, Thāla is really confusing and I’d really like someone my age who I can bang my head against a wall with for a few days to understand how Thāla is supposed to work.

Demographically, I am a 23 year old man and I am going to be graduating from university tomorrow. I’m open to anyone from anywhere in the world, just be around my age, have western classical music and jazz experience, and yeah we should be good.

Is playing two Shruti boxes at once (one with each hand) a thing?

I got my first instrument ever, a Shruti box with 8 major chords. I am already finding that (in addition to wishing I'd gotten one with way more keys), that I often want to play up to four major chords during one song, sometimes together and sometimes in combination with just 1-2 of the others. Would it make more sense to play another box with my non-dominant hand as well so that the chord changes are less clunky? How could I know if my brain could learn to manage both? Thanks for any thoughts. Pranams

Carrying Veena in Flight?

Hi everyone,

I am about to purchase a full-size Ekantha Veena from Chennai and need to transport it to Gurgaon. I am evaluating 2 options:

  1. Get the store to courier it to me via DTDC or other providers
  2. Travel to Chennai and get it myself via Flight

I am concerned about the safety in option 1 since there is no guarantee given by store owner or DTDC. Hence planning to get it myself via flight.

Just wanted to check if anyone here has travelled with Veena on flight before?

If so, do we get it checked-in with a Fibre Case or buy another seat and get it into cabin, if its allowed?

Carnatic music is an acquired taste and rightfully so!

Today's generation has shrinking attention span and things like instagram and tiktok are to be blamed. They want music which is easily palatable and short, crisp to the point. While it is not entirely wrong, our system does not fit into that bracket neatly. I see comments like dilute carnatic music and what not. But by its very nature, it is dense and requires patience and years to master. Everyone has their own prefernces and there are other types of music suited to their needs. But changing this artform is not it. It is at the end of the day, not for everyone and it shall be that way for a long time to come.

Would anyone here be willing to help test an Indian music notation app before release?

Hi everyone,

I’m the Hindustani flutist/developer who shared srgm.io here recently — the platform for writing and sharing Indian music notation using Sargam (Sa Re Ga Ma).

I’m now trying to get the Android app version released publicly, and Google currently requires a small closed testing phase (12 testers for 14 days).

If anyone here would be willing to help test it, it would genuinely mean a lot to me as an independent musician/developer project.

The app lets you:

• Explore community notations

• Hear notation back with playback

• Save your own repertoire and notes

• Practice with tools like transpose and alankaar generation

To join the test:

  1. Join this Google Group: https://groups.google.com/g/srgmandroid
  2. Install the Android app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.srgm.app

You can also try the PRO subscription if you’d like — Google clearly marks it as a test purchase and you won’t actually be charged during testing.

Even simply installing the app and keeping it installed for the testing period helps a lot.

Thanks again 🙏

Question : Do you know of online carnatic music teachers who are flexible with dates and timings?

Reddit really has a sub for everything! So happy to see this sub :) ive been looking for an online professor for a while, i prefer Sunday classes BUT i also travel during some months. I can't take the anxiety of someone who is not flexible and get angry when classes shift. (I've had similar experience before and it left a sour taste).

Would you have any recommendations for someone who needs a flexible schedule?
