Tips and/or tricks for quicker mental addition?
Im in craps training, the last week is next week and were starting center action on Monday. Our trainer gave us the keys on Thursday to start memorizing over the weekend. Im getting that just fine, have been using ChatGPT to drill me on them and some payouts, and most recently ive been having it drill me on totaling multiple bets.
And ive come to learn something about myself that i didnt really expect — i apparently SUCK at addition. Multiplication and division is no issue for me, i can do blackjack payouts like no ones business, even the 7:6 nonsense isnt an issue for me. And all the keys arent a problem either, i got 125/150 payouts correct and it even said most of the misses were in the beginning where i kept mixing up the keys cuz i was still familiarizing myself with them. Most of those were correct but for the wrong key. But with the totaling im currently at 5/10 correct, 6 of them were 3 or 4 payouts to total and i got 2/6 on those correct. Its a small sample, but not promising so far and i will say for each of those i took a good 30-40 seconds to come to any kind of answer.
If the numbers are written down in front of me im not too shabby at adding but when thats not the case and i have to hold the numbers in my head and total them i lose the plot. Most of my misses on the ChatGPT quiz i had the individual payouts correct but i failed to total them correctly. The way i add in my head is the only way i know how and its the way i learned back in grade school — total the right-most digit, carry the ten digit over, total the second (ten) digit with the carry, carry over, etc. But i just know that thats the long way, just like how ive come to learn the school-taught method of multiplication is the long way, ive learned much faster mental methods in training and just throughout life. Cant say the same for addition tho.
So.. any tips or tricks that anyone can share? I feel there has to be something ive just not heard about..
