Today’s Watch

The watch: Casio MRW200H-7BV

The backstory: When my original MRW200H-1BV (which became my knock-around watch) wound up with a broken strap and a dead battery, I decided to buy this one; it was similar enough, with the dial being white instead of black.

I eventually invested in a watch repair kit, batteries, and a replacement strap for the original, so now I have two solid watches that serve the “knock-around” purpose, though I’ve recently come to appreciate how gorgeous they are when they’re clean and polished, so I may have to find a replacement watch for that category!

Why I like it: As with the version initially replaced, this watch is a tank; it’s been through the works and keeps going (this one is also on strap #2)! It’s comfortable and does what it was meant to do, and as a native Spanish speaker, I love that option for the day window!

What’s on your wrist today?

Last weekends Sunday cruise

I am looking for some different hands and indices to change the look. All red is cool but some gold is needed.

The DW291 is way tougher in person.

I’ve been considering adding this one to the collection for quite some time, but I just never got around to picking one up. It kinda felt like a bit of an oddball reference, and judging from pics I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it. When Casio discontinued the model I kinda gave up on it since I knew it would go up in price.

I happened upon this nearly new example on local Marketplace and managed to obtain it for $25. As soon as I got it in my hand I could tell I was going to enjoy it more than I thought. It’s bigger than I expected. The display is ultra legible. The band is super soft. And the pushers are delightfully tactile.

It has the features of my AE1200 Royale while being easier to read and adjust; the wrist presence of my WS1700 Moon Phase with a much more comfortable strap; and the water resistance, mineral glass, and rugged feel of my G-Shocks.

I didn’t intend on writing a review of this watch, but it’s just surprisingly good. If you can find this one under $40 I highly recommend.

Whag do y’all think? I love the look of it on wrist. Happy Sunday Casioholics!

Why I sold my BRAND NEW GW-M5610U G-Shock and bought a 2005 and a 2022 DW5600 instead

I already own a couple of waveceptors and four tough solar watches and a handful of round G-Shocks but I never had it all wrapped into one like the GW-M5610U. I had been wanting a Square G to fit better under my long sleeve cuffs in the winter time with a jacket and after reading all the reviews I figured that this was my holy Grail of G-Shocks so I went ahead and ordered it. When it arrived it looked beautiful but then came the dirty truth. Being used to larger Casio and G-Shock models I forgot to take in to account the size of the time numerals. I'm over 60 and a couple of years ago I had to start wearing reading glasses and when I strapped on the new watch I realized that I have to squint to see the numbers or try to hold my arm as far away from my eyes as possible. I was very disappointed in this limitation. That is the only thing that disappointed me about another wise "perfect" watch. I did love the size and form factor and decided well if I wasn't going to be able to see it clearly there was no point in keeping it so I decided to let somebody with younger eyes purchase it and enjoy it. But still like in the idea of the squares I went online and I found the 2005 DW 5600 with the older 1545 module made at the Thailand Y factory that has a crisp screen and a nice blue electroluminescent backlight. It didn't solve having to squint in the daytime but it did make it easier to read at night plus I like the white case with the blue bull bars. This was a tourist purchase in Bangkok from the Casio store where I guess you could get any type and color combination of G-Shock that you wanted. Then I bought the black DW 5600 with the older 3229 module made at the Thailand DH factory which also has electroluminescence but in a slightly more green shade than the more blue 1545. To make it match the white one I ordered a Red Bull bar for it so now I have a pair I call Ebony and Ivory... So fashion-wise they work and are comfortable to wear and they will slip easily under my sleeve cuff in the winter time. Actually, the white one is slightly more comfortable and has a softer strap and case texture. So, if you're an older guy and contemplating getting yourself a GW-M5610U just keep in mind the legibility factor if you value reading your watch clearly without having to put on reading glasses. So I will miss that watch because I was excited to get it but I was able to sell it and have enough money to get its two replacements so now I have two squares that fill a missing niche and from different spots on the G-Shock timeline in my collection.
