Unpopular OpusX? Lost City Toro (2023) Review

The Arturo Fuente OpusX "Lost City" Toro has been on my list for a while, and I finally got to sit down with one — 2023 roll, second band on this release.

The backstory on this one is part of what makes it special. Back in 2004, Andy García needed a summer tobacco field for a scene in his film "The Lost City," but Château de la Fuente's crops are normally harvested in the spring. Carlito Fuente planted a special off-season crop just to make the shot happen. That original crop reportedly spent around 5 years aging before it was good enough to become part of the OpusX range — and from there it eventually turned into a limited release, produced in small annual batches, with proceeds tied to the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation's Lost City Scholarship Fund. That summer-grown, extra-aged tobacco is what's supposed to set Lost City apart from standard OpusX: a smoother, more refined expression of the blend rather than a completely different recipe.

Worth noting on the aging front: this particular stick was rolled in 2023, so as of today it's had about 3 years of rest on top of whatever cabinet aging happened before it hit shelves — likely part of why the burn, draw, and overall smoothness were so dialed in.

Vitola: Toro
Vintage: Rolled 2023, second band
Factory: Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia., Dominican Republic

Construction – 10/10
This is where the Lost City really impressed me. Immaculate roll from foot to cap, no soft spots, seams you can barely see. Classic Fuente craftsmanship on display.

Burn & Draw – 10/10
Flawless the entire smoke. Burned even with no touch-ups needed, and the draw had that perfect resistance from light to nub.

Flavor Journey
My own palate wasn't picking up much complexity on this one — the one thing I could pin down was a little white pepper, nothing more specific than that. For reference, other reviewers commonly report notes like these by third, though your mileage (and mine) may vary:

First third: cedar, light woodiness, black or white pepper, leather, hints of honey or dried fruit
Second third: pepper mellows, cocoa and coffee come forward, nutty notes, caramel-like sweetness
Final third: dark chocolate, earth, roasted coffee/espresso, pepper often returns, occasional floral or citrus note at the end

For me it was mostly white pepper up front and smooth sailing after that — smooth and enjoyable, just not a smoke where I was picking apart a lot of layers.

My Ratings
Construction: 10/10
Burn: 10/10
Draw: 10/10
Overall: Solid smoke, would smoke again

Final Thoughts
The Lost City is a genuinely well-built, well-behaved cigar — no complaints on the technical side at all. That said, stacked up against the rest of the OpusX lineup, it's not the one I'd reach for first. Good, but not a must-hunt release for me personally.

Now I'd love to hear from everyone else:

Where does the Lost City rank in your personal OpusX lineup?
Anyone pick up distinct flavor notes on this vitola that I might've missed?
How does the second-band 2023 roll compare to earlier releases you've had?
How does Lost City stack up against other special OpusX releases for you — Oro Oscuro, 25th Anniversary, Heaven and Earth, or the standard OpusX lineup?
Given the "smoother, more refined" reputation Lost City has compared to classic OpusX, do you think that trade-off is worth it, or do you prefer the rawer, spicier character of the original blend?
Anyone aged theirs beyond what's already baked in from the original tobacco? Curious if extra time in the humidor changes it further.

Balsa 9 mm filters for cigars

Hi everyone,

I am thinking of smoking cigars, and I am checking the available filters 9 mm, like Balsa and activated carbon filters.

Are Balsa filters any good for blocking nicotine?

What is the best filter for nicotine and tar reduction?

Thank you very much.
