Quiet places to meet in Colombo

A friend who is going through something wants to talk. Meeting at either of our homes is out of the question. What are some quiet or somewhat private places in colombo where 2 people can talk on a weekday evening? Even a quiet coffee shop or restaurant thats not too pricey.

Plumbers who never show up. Electricians who scam you. Masons who are half drunk on the job. So we built something to fix that, tell me why it won't work ( no names or links are mentioned - i don't want to be banned )

Okay so first of all this is NOT an ad, I'm not going to be dropping any names or links here. I just genuinely want to hear from you guys about something that's been bothering all of us for a while now.

You know how it goes. You call a plumber. He says he'll come next week. Next week comes, you call again , same answer. And when he finally does show up he either doesn't have the right parts, quotes a number off the top of his head or disappears halfway through the job.

And it doesn't matter whether you need something fixed or something built from scratch, the electrician, the mason, the painter, the AC guy all different trades but same story and the same Tuesday that never comes."

Here's What we think we can do. (Again, I am not posting any links or numbers here!)

We're not doing this only because we think it's a good business idea (We hope it is though!), We're doing this because between us we have the supply connections, the local knowledge, the investment, a few hundred numbers and frankly the stubbornness to actually see this through. We have needed this for a long time and We want to be the ones to be able build this dream into a reality.

And it's not just plumbers we needed. So we went out across the cities in Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara, scraped numbers off directories, talked to workers at construction sites and Ended up with a long list. Then came the hard part, figuring out who was actually worth their word . That alone took us a month we won't get back.

For appliances and AC work the parts situation is different, refrigerants, compressor parts, specialist stuff. We have a small scale A/C, fridge and other equipment supply parts dealer but we hope and are working on formalizing deals with companies like LG and Abans.

When you reach out(If you ever do), a dispatcher takes your job and sets everything in motion. You don't chase anyone. We do that.

We were thinking that, If at the end of it the job is not done right , customers get a FULL refund or another technicians to fix it up. Guaranteed

We're ready to take our first orders. But Before we do we wanted to put this in front of real people who've actually lived this problem (not friends and family who'll just tell us what we want to hear.)

We've been so deep in building this that honestly we're probably blind to things that are obvious from the outside. You guys have lived this problem longer than we've been trying to fix it. What are we missing and what are your thoughts

(We do everything if you're wondering , from building houses to ensuring the AC is not going to ruin your night )

Built a Sri Lankan carpool app for daily commuters — looking for early drivers to test it

Hey everyone,

I built a carpool/rideshare platform focused on Sri Lankan daily commuting routes like:

  • Negombo ↔ Colombo
  • Kandy ↔ Colombo
  • Homagama ↔ Colombo
  • Gampaha ↔ Colombo

The idea is simple:
If you already drive to work daily with empty seats, you can share the ride and reduce fuel costs for everyone.

I’m now looking for early drivers and passengers to help test the platform before a bigger launch.

Especially looking for:

  • office commuters
  • university students
  • people doing regular long-distance travel
  • anyone already informally carpooling

Main goal right now is testing:

  • ride posting
  • booking flow
  • matching commuters on similar routes
  • general usability

No complicated setup. Just trying to build something genuinely useful for Sri Lanka because commuting costs and traffic are getting ridiculous.

If anyone is interested in trying it out or giving feedback, comment below or DM me.

Would genuinely appreciate early testers and honest feedback.

Things to do over the weekend

Hi, I am an Indian guy in Colombo for a business trip. I am staying back for the weekend and exploring what new experiences I can try out here.

Over the course of the last six months, during my past trips, I've been to Galle, Hirikitiya, and Ahangama. This is the first time I'm looking to stay back in Colombo. Have already been to the tourist locations and want to indulge in newer experiences this time.

Please suggest things to do. Also, if any good soul wants to accompany me for any of the things - you are welcome. Drinks are on me :)

Cafes/ cowork spaces/ work-friendly hotels near the airport?

Hello to the warm people of this beautiful country!

I’m a tourist that’s flying out from Colombo tomorrow. I have a shuttle from Kandy to Colombo airport reserved for 8:30 AM, but my flight’s only at night so I have lots of time to kill from about noon. I could really use a few hours of work on some deadlines, and would need a relaxed environment with a decent WiFi connection (maybe 10mbps at least). Any recommendations? It doesn’t strictly have to be near the airport, but that would save me some back and forth. I’m thinking cafes or cowork spaces or similar where I can buy food and coffee from time to time but where there’s no pressure to keep buying things to justify my stay. It’s ok if the place is a bit pricey, just need a good spot. I guess they won’t allow me into the airport so early?

Can’t wait to visit again!!

Starting as an Intern Medical Officer soon - station selection, accommodation, and honest senior advice?

Hi everyone!

I’m starting my internship as an Intern Medical Officer soon, and I’d really appreciate some guidance from seniors.

My questions:

  1. Station selection:

    - How did you choose your stations?

    - What should a new intern keep in mind while selecting stations?

    - If you could redo it, which station would you prioritize and why?

  2. Experiences at different stations:

    - Could you share what your experience was like in your different stations?

    - What were the best learning experiences, and what were the biggest challenges?

  3. Is internship “that bad”?

    - Everyone says internship is stressful and terrible,

From your experience, is it really as bad as people say, or is it more manageable than expected?

- What helped you survive and stay productive?

  1. Accommodation & logistics:

    - Quarters vs boarding?

Any essentials for a smooth start:

If you have a checklist (things to carry, habits to build, what to learn first, how to approach ward work, how to handle seniors/handovers, etc.), I’d love that too.

Thanks in advance! Any honest advice is genuinely appreciated.
