Experienced BASE jumper suffers fatal 29-story fall after rushed gear check in Thailand

Nathy Odinson was a 33-year-old British BASE jumper who tragically fell to his death in Pattaya, Thailand on January 27, 2024.

Odinson and a friend had snuck onto the roof of a 29-story high-rise condominium building to record a night jump for social media content. Because they were trying to capture the footage quickly before building security could spot them, Odinson rushed through his gear check.

During the rush, he misrouted his pilot chute's connecting strap (the bridle), accidentally wrapping it underneath his main harness strap. When he jumped off the ledge and threw out his pilot chute, the trapped bridle could not pull the main parachute out of his container. He went into a tailspin and was killed instantly upon impacting the ground below.

Safety Analysis:

This tragic accident shows how deadly it is to rush through safety checks, even if you're an expert. Because Odinson was rushing to beat building security, he didn't notice that his parachute's connecting line was accidentally caught underneath his backpack strap. When he jumped and threw out his small pilot chute, the trapped line couldn't pull his main parachute out. In extreme sports with zero room for error, a tiny mistake made in a hurry turns into a fatal mistake.

You can never let outside distractions or pressure mess with your pre-jump checklist. Safety rules require an uninterrupted "buddy check" where a partner manually traces every line and pin to spot hidden mistakes. Sneaking onto roofs creates a high-pressure rush that makes people skip basic steps. Taking your time to slowly and carefully double-check your life-saving gear is the only way to stay alive when there is no time for a backup plan.
