Dahab

Hello,

I am planning to go to Dahab this November for about 1–2 weeks, and it will be my first time solo traveling.

I completed my AIDA 3 last summer and I’m planning to complete my AIDA 4 or other same lvl certification, so I thought Dahab would be a good place to do it since I am already planning to go there.

I have some problems with my equalization. I’m using Frenzel, but after around 25m I feel like there’s no more air in my mouth to equalize with. I’ve read that I should be able to get to around 40m with Frenzel no mouth fill needed, so I guess I’m doing something wrong with my glottis.

When I reach that deoth, the strong contractions start and I feel like I start losing all the air from my mouth into my lungs. I’m not able to control and close my glottis during strong contractions while also equalizing at that depth.

I’ve also read that in some freediving schools there you might not get the best coaching for specific weaknesses, since you could have a different instructor each day and there might be more than 2 people training at the same time. I feel like that might make it harder to properly work on my equalization issue.

So I’m looking for recommendations for instructors who could help me with this specific problem while also helping me complete my AIDA 4. Ideally, I’d prefer 1-to-2 sessions, which I think would be more fun and maybe more affordable than 1-to-1, while still allowing me to work on my issue.

Thanks!

Where did you find the best cup of coffee in Dahab ?

My favourite place recently closed and I'm looking for a new one.

If you're going to the beach with one of these please consult a therapist.

This is so unbelievably disgusting and I can't believe that these kinds of people are in dahab now.

Rafiki or dar el badawi

So I'm a solo traveller and I'm gonna stay for 4 nights in dahab, which is better rafiki or dar el badawi as a first time in dahab. And do you have any activity recommendations?

Looking for advice on equalising + planning a Dahab trip in 2027

Recently got my Open Water certification in Grand Cayman and logged 7 dives. Unfortunately, I ended up with ear barotrauma and have struggled massively with equalising.

I never really managed to equalise properly, despite doing a specialised dive specifically to work on the problem with instructors and dive-master friends. Eventually the dives had to come to an end because I simply couldn't descend without significant difficulty/discomfort. On my final attempt, I was only around 5–8m deep when I developed a persistent nosebleed that continued throughout the dive. Obviously, extremely frustrating, especially as I'd already been assessed and cleared to dive by a dive ENT.

I'm now planning ahead for my next trip, which will hopefully be Dahab, Egypt around April-June 2027.

I'll be travelling with a friend who will be doing their Open Water course while we're there. My current plan is to attempt some fun dives again and see whether I can finally descend comfortably. I've also considered doing my Advanced Open Water course at the same time they're doing their Open Water course, so that once we've both finished we can spend the remainder of the trip diving together.

I'm currently pursuing further medical assessment to make sure there isn't an underlying sinus/ear issue that has been missed. So far, nobody has found any obvious red flags.

What I'm particularly interested in:

  • Equalising advice: Has anyone had genuinely severe difficulty equalising despite having normal ENT examinations, and eventually found something that worked?
  • Techniques, preparation, training, or habits that made a significant difference for you.
  • Whether Dahab is a particularly good place to try again given the generally easy shore diving and shallow/accessible sites.
  • Dive centres in Dahab: I'm looking for somewhere extremely professional, safety-focused and experienced with divers who have equalisation problems. Ideally somewhere with excellent instructors rather than simply the cheapest option.
  • Accommodation/dive hotels: Any recommendations for places where the diving operation is particularly good and convenient?
  • Dive sites: Which sites around Dahab are absolute must-dives for someone returning to diving?
  • Whether April–June is a good period to visit, particularly in terms of water temperature, visibility and general diving conditions.
  • Any other advice for planning the trip around my equalisation issues.

I'm not looking for someone to tell me to "just equalise earlier" - I've heard that one plenty of times! I'm particularly interested in experiences from people who also struggled badly with equalisation despite doing everything correctly, and eventually figured out how to make it work.

I'd also be interested in hearing from Dahab locals/instructors/divemasters about which dive operation they'd personally trust with this situation.

Thanks!!

A 30 Y.o woman was found dead under mysterious cause of death in Dahab

Yara Bakry was found dead in her own house after the neighbors reported the smell ,almost a month ago and the Egyptian prosecutor's office stated that the cause of death is abnormal

and the body will be autopsy to find out the cause of death

now it’s been a month after her case went viral and no one speaks about her anymore

Yara has such healthy daily routine for her and her dogs either. We spoke 15 days before she disappeared and seemed to be okay we texted for a bit that day about how Cairo sucks and kept laughing about it. Yara was that kind of a woman who loves life no matter how hard it can get sometimes she believes she will through it and not that kind of a person who gives up easily

now why the morgue did not issue a report on the cause of death and why even her closest friends stopped talking about it idk if felt suspicious to me since I heard about and my heart is so full of grief for the fact she died in her own home without any of her close people to check on her

Advice?

Hi guys! I’m planning a solo trip to Dahab very soon and, as someone who likes to plan ahead, I’d really appreciate your advice:

(For reference, I’m an egyptian girl if that makes any difference!)

  • I’d like to stay at a budget-friendly camp by the sea with good snorkeling/deeper water. Dahab is preferred, but Nuweiba is also an option.

  • What do you think of camping at Abu Galoum or Blue Lagoon? Any solo-female-friendly camps there?

  • Any tips for keeping transportation costs in Dahab low as I’ll be alone? Would renting a car be more cost-effective maybe? (I can drive)

  • Roughly how much is a taxi from Mamsha to Blue Hole and Mamsha to Asalah for example?

  • When swimming, I go quite far out and can’t see the shore. How do you safely keep your phone and valuables in that case, especially at places like lagoona?

  • Is it safe to bring 🍄 from Cairo? Can dogs there detect it? If not, I’d appreciate a contact for someone who sells it locally.

  • I’d also appreciate a contact for 🍃D. Is it okay to take some to Nuweiba, or are there checkpoints?

  • Any recommendations for non-touristy spots?

  • And finally, how crowded is Dahab in August?

Thank you so much for taking the time to help!
