President Sulyok hits back at PM Magyar’s constitutional overhaul: “I have no reason to resign”

President Sulyok hits back at PM Magyar’s constitutional overhaul: “I have no reason to resign”

Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok has sharply criticised the government’s proposed 17th amendment to Hungary’s Fundamental Law, arguing that the plan to terminate his mandate is incompatible with the principles of the rule of law.

Speaking to the Polish conservative weekly Do Rzeczy, Sulyok said the proposal announced by Prime Minister Péter Magyar would end the current president’s term through a constitutional amendment that targets a specific individual rather than the office itself.

‘Tragic for Fidesz’: Top Hungarian political analyst warns party is wasting its chance to recover

Hungarian political analyst Gábor Török has delivered a strict assessment of Fidesz, arguing that the party's failure to renew itself following its election defeat could prove "almost as tragic" as the result itself.

Writing on Facebook, Török said the absence of both new leadership and fresh political ideas is causing the party to waste what he considers a crucial period for rebuilding support. His comments come after two of Hungary's most respected polling organisations published surveys showing the Tisza Party maintaining a commanding lead over Fidesz.

Where will Péter Magyar’s real opposition come from? Nearly all Hungarians now back Tisza, new poll suggests

A fresh survey by Medián indicates that the Tisza movement faces virtually no meaningful opposition, while Fidesz has shrunk to the status of a mid-sized party and the far-right Mi Hazánk may only just scrape into parliament. The question now confronting Hungary’s political landscape is where any genuine opposition to Péter Magyar might emerge.

Political analysts argue that the Tisza-led government is still enjoying a political “honeymoon” with the electorate. Support for Mr Magyar continues to grow, even as Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz has slipped into the political middle tier. Were an election held this Sunday, the party would likely lose even the ten individual constituencies it still held as recently as mid-April.

Will former anti-terrorism chief Hajdu face jail instead of ex-PM Orbán? Alleged aim of secret meeting revealed

The prosecution yesterday questioned János Hajdu, the former head of Hungary’s Counter Terrorism Centre (TEK), on suspicion of unlawfully detaining seven Ukrainian cash couriers in handcuffs for nearly nine hours. Viktor Orbán swiftly came to his defence, denouncing the case as a Tisza-led political witch-hunt, and promptly appointed Hajdu as Fidesz’s security director.

Orbán, Hajdu, Demeter responsible

Yet the story does not end there. Investigative journalist Szabolcs Panyi has reported that, following the election, Orbán, Hajdu and Tamás Demeter, former deputy head of Hungary’s National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV), held a clandestine meeting at the Andrássy Avenue villa of Lőrinc Mészáros.

Is this the beginning of the end for Orbán’s Fidesz? New poll shows devastating numbers for them

The IDEA Institute’s mid-June survey shows that support for Orbán’s Fidesz–KDNP has fallen to a historic low among voters. According to the findings, only 21 percent of the adult population would vote for the former governing parties if there were an election on Sunday.

The latest data suggest a significant reshaping of Hungary’s political landscape in recent weeks, while support for the TISZA Party has continued to grow. The study highlights that the share of undecided voters decreased by 3 percentage points from May to June, down to 11 percent, indicating that many voters have recently aligned themselves with a new political option, Szeretlek Magyarország wrote.

Orbán’s new Jerusalem cultural base emerges in luxury district, but funding and documents are hidden

A newly established Hungarian cultural institution in Jerusalem has drawn attention after reports revealed a lack of publicly available documentation on its legal status, financing and operations. According to investigative reporting by Átlátszó, the academy appears to function as part of Hungary’s cultural diplomacy network, yet key details about its creation are unclear.

Academy opened in elite Jerusalem district

The Jeruzsálemi Magyar Akadémia (Hungarian Academy in Jerusalem) officially opened in December 2025 in the city’s upscale Talbiyeh neighbourhood, one of Jerusalem’s most prestigious districts. According to Átlátszó, the institution operates in a prime location near the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) building and several diplomatic properties, including Czech and Slovak missions.

Hungary has suspended new guest worker permits – what does it mean for foreign workers and employers?

Earlier this month, Hungary quietly introduced one of the biggest changes to its immigration and employment rules in recent years by suspending applications for new guest worker residence permits. Many employers and foreign workers are still trying to understand what it actually means in practice.

The short answer is that Hungary has not stopped hiring non-EU workers altogether, but the country’s main guest worker scheme has been put on hold while the government reviews the entire system.

Georgian-Israeli businessman linked to former propaganda minister Rogán allegedly sought to gain access to key aide of PM Péter Magyar

A Georgian-Israeli businessman, Shabtai Michaeli, is alleged to have attempted to approach Márk Radnai—widely regarded as a close ally of Péter Magyar—through the politician’s father, though the effort reportedly came to nothing after contact details were withheld. According to reports, Michaeli—named in Népszava as a notable beneficiary of schemes linked to the residency bond programme associated with Orbán government propaganda minister Antal Rogán—is said to have been unable to secure an introduction to Márk Radnai. Radnai is also the government commissioner for a “humane and functioning Hungary” and, in civilian life, a theatre director.

PM Péter Magyar’s first 50 days: promise and reality

Prime minister Péter Magyar is proud of his first fifty days. That is understandable — and partly justified. But when a prime minister enthusiastically reports on his own performance, it is worth leaning in a little closer to the numbers. Not out of scepticism, but because democracy works precisely when people know what to believe.

The usual political ritual

Let us start where it makes sense: Magyar Péter’s Facebook post is political communication. It makes no secret of that, and it should not have to. Every government that reaches a round-number milestone publishes a list like this — fifty days, a hundred days, six months. Orbán did it. Merkel did it. The genre’s defining feature is that it leads with the wins, presents work in progress as completed results, and bundles favourable external circumstances as internal achievements.

Leaked documents point fingers to former PM Orbán’s role in raid of Ukraine’s gold convoy case

A leaked prosecution document has reportedly placed former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán among the central figures whose potential criminal responsibility should be investigated in connection with the so-called “gold convoy” incident, one of the country’s most controversial law enforcement operations in recent years.

Leaked document names Viktor Orbán among key figures

According to documents cited by Hungarian news outlet 444.hu, prosecutors are examining whether senior officials played a role in decisions surrounding a March operation that targeted a convoy linked to a Ukrainian state-owned bank.
