Airport <-> Dal Campus/Spring Garden?

Hey guys, I have a business trip soon that requires me to get from Dal Campus/Spring Garden to the airport for an intl flight at 0800 hours. I’m aiming for a 0600 arrival, and I’d like to get my money worth.

A few options I have are:
- Driving & parking for a week over there
- Ubering & Taxi-ing
- Bus & Transit

So knowing we got a community of students from afar, any suggestions? I’m taking x2 Patagonia MLC packs so luggage is no factors.

Any suggestions for supervisor?

Well Dalhousie is a long shot, but missing 100% of the shots I do not take....I want to research Indigenous Identity under the Sociology umbrella, or near sociology at least.

Does anyone have any recommendations for who I should consider and who I should avoid?

rate my schedule

Will be a first year undergraduate at Dalhousie and I kind of made a schedule based off of the classes I wanted to take rather than the timing, so I just wanted some opinions. I don't mind my fall schedule but I think winter could be a bit too stuffed on specific days such as Tuesday/Wednesday.

Is it worth it to graduate if it probably isn't going to lead to a career?

Going into fourth year EE. Didn't get a co-op this summer, won't get the option to do one next winter, and I kind of doubt I stand a chance for my last one next summer. I can try to improve and apply myself more all I please (and I have been, I guess), but without an internship is my degree not worthless? I'm going to be the bottom of the barrel no matter what I do at this point. Is it worth the ~20k more in debt?

First Year Student at Gerard Hall

I'm a first year engineering student and was assigned a single room in Gerard Hall. I put in a room reassignment request to be on the main campus, but so close to the move-in date, Risley is full. Shirreff seemed like a stretch to get as well. Don't really want to be in Howe because I prefer quiet. I have friends in dorms on Studley so I'm sure I'll be hanging out there sometimes, but want to make friends in my dorm too. It's sort of appealing to be around other engineering students, too? It'll be ok right?

Advice on grad programs at Dal?

Hi y'all! I'm looking for some advice on grad programs at Dal (specifically the MI vs. MSW programs).

I'm (26F) 4 years post-grad from a bachelor's degree at a different university. After graduation I did one year of an MA program, but I chose to leave due to mental health reasons and a lack of interest in the program. For the past 3 years I have been working various admin roles in higher education, but I am looking for a career change and am considering going back to school for that.

I'm considering the MI since it is a direct-entry program and I think I'd have a decent shot of getting in, although I'm nervous about career prospects post-grad with all the cuts that have been happening across the province (although I'm more drawn to research librarianship/archival work, which may be more secure??). I'm also considering the MSW, which would certainly be harder for me to get into since I would be entering as a non-BSW student and would likely need to volunteer and take some courses before applying. I've also considered some of the online MACP programs, but I like the variety of job types to a MSW rather than just strict counselling and would prefer an in-person program in Halifax.

I know these are two super different programs, but if anyone could speak to their experience of applying/getting accepted/being in either of these programs I would really appreciate it. Any helpful (and kind) advice is welcome, too! Thank you!!!

How hard is it to get into Dalhousie Nursing as an out-of-province student?

Hi! I’m considering applying to Dalhousie University’s BScN program, but I’m from out of province and I’m wondering how competitive admission is for students who aren’t from Nova Scotia.

If anyone here has gotten into Dal Nursing from another province, what were your grades like when you applied? I’d also love to hear from current nursing students about how competitive the program felt to get into and whether you have any advice for someone hoping to apply.
Thank you!!

Parking near campus?

I’m starting at dal this fall and will be driving there. I’m aware it’s super expensive to get parking on campus which is why I plan to sell my car asap after moving in, but until I’m able to sell it does anyone have recommendations for places around campus I could park? Like street parking etc. I don’t mind if it’s a bit of a walk. Thanks!!

Hey, I am 21 right now, from germany and wanna start university next fall and dal would be one of my favs. I would be 22 by then and am scared I would be too old and would have problems finding friends, having a good social life etc and being seen as too old and weird.

(I didnt finish highschool before I was 20 in europe, took a gap year and couldn’t attend this year because of personal reasons.)

Could you all tell me what you think? Thanks!

Tuition fee for engineering

Hey everyone,
I just checked my account statement for the upcoming Fall semester in Engineering, and my total balance came out to $7,411.25 due Sept 22.

Before looking at the actual breakdown, I was under the impression that tuition and fees would be around $4,500 to $5,000 per semester. Seeing over $7.4k was definitely a bit of a reality check!

Looking closely at the statement:
Pure tuition across my courses (PHYC, MATH, ENGM, ENGI, CPST, CHEM) comes out to around $4,850, which is pretty close to what I originally expected.
But then all the additional stuff gets added on—ancillary/auxiliary fees, Facilities/Sexton Campus Renewal, Fitness, DSU fees, the Bus Pass ($177.90), Student Orientation ($130), and the Health & Dental Insurance ($491.89).
I know the Health & Dental plan is a one-time charge in the Fall that covers the whole year (and I can opt out if I already have coverage), but even without it, mandatory fees add up fast.

For those further along in the program:

  1. Is ~$7k+ typical for a Fall semester in Engineering, or does it drop significantly in Winter once things like orientation and health insurance clear out?
  2. Are there any specific non-mandatory fees I should look into opting out of to bring the cost closer to ~$5.5k–$6k?

Bus Pass

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a bus pass for the fall term even if I am doing a co-op work term? I do have courses registered for Winter 2027. Appreciate any help

GEA not showing up?

I got my course registration fees last week, but my account doesn’t show any record of my gea. I have my offer letter in April, which says the award would be applied automatically to my account, but so far nothing. Is this normal?

Best off campus study spots?

Where do people living off campus go to study?

in particular looking for cute cafes or libraries nearby to downtown Halifax or Fenwick medical centre? I’m moving to Halifax so I’d like to know some places where it’s acceptable be studying on a laptop for hours and has outlets :)

Chemistry

Hi guys I just wanted to ask as a neuroscience major in my first year, should I take 5 courses being elective + chemistry 1011 + biology 1012 + math 1215 or should I take off chemistry and try to take it in the summer, as on ratemyprof… the chem classes’ professor (Angela Crane) is rated SUPER low… and it’s kind of frightening me 😂

How do I talk to a guy at the gym that I like?

There's a lean guy at my gym that I find really attractive, but we've never spoken. He always seems focused and I don't want to bother him while he's working out.

Have any women here actually approached a guy at the gym before? How did it go? And for the guys, how would you feel if a woman started a conversation with you at the gym?

Does anyone have experience with a waitlist to program entry?

Hey everyone, this is my first Reddit post. I’ve already sent emails to the registrar’s office and advising but I thought I might ask here in case anyone has been in a similar situation and is willing to share.

I am currently a BEng student and submitted a late application to BCD. I had a few summer courses and was on the fence if I wanted to switch programs in the fall semester.

Today I received this decision letter from Dal:

“Thank you for your application to the Bachelor of Community Design program at our Halifax campus, Nova Scotia.
Owing to the limited enrolment and the large number of applicants for this program, your application has been placed on a waitlist. We will notify you in writing if we are able to offer you a seat in the program.

Please note that due to the volume of applications and transcripts being received, we are unable to provide applicants with a waitlist ranking.”

Should I expect to be admitted to the program only if students drop classes when the fall semester begins? My reasoning is that by now, most students that would decline or defer their offer, have already done so.

Thanks, any help is much appreciated in advance.
