Brian Michael Bendis run

I feel like a bad fan. I only read the first volume of the Bendis run and wasn’t that impressed. I’ll still read volume 2 though. Is that where it picks up?

Incredible year for marvel!

The fact that we got daredevil, punisher and spider-man in the same year is truly incredible. Marvel is on fire this year!

Even as a fan of both the original show and BA, I never understood the "Fisk genuinely loves New York" part

I wanna talk about the line that Matt says to Fisk in the S2 finale of DD:BA, "I believe that you love New York, same as me", and if that line even makes sense.

With that line, it seems Matt implies that Fisk doesn't just love the city simply because he was born and raised in it, like the city is family to him, but as if he genuinely tried to help it, and solve its problems.

Let's go back to that scene in S1 of the original show where Fisk and Vanessa are at a restaurant, and they were both watching how the Russians' warehouses were being blown up. Fisk reveals that he gave the order to start the explosions, and gives his explanation, something along the lines of "these criminals are the ones behind so many cases of drug distribution, kidnapping and human trafficking in the city, and that what he's doing is cleaning up the streets and eliminating crime by taking such measures". And throughout S1, he presents himself to the world as a "philanthropist", someone who uses their resources to help, make donations to charitites and stuff like that. But I don't we've ever really seen him doing things like these in the original show, instead we always saw what he truly does, which is running the entire criminal world of New York. He never really did anything philanthropic, not with genuine intentions, and not even as means of creating the philanthropic image in public. At best, he presented himself as some rich, wealthy guy, an entrepreneur maybe, someone who's constantly involved in some business dealings, however shady they are.

And then in DD:BA, Fisk becomes the mayor of New York, and he uses his "cleaning up the streets" BS here too. Sure, the first and most important point of his agenda, as it was established from the beginning, was apprehending vigilantes and eliminating such form of lawlessness, and dealing with other problems in the city came second. But throughout the show, we see him using this agenda as an excuse to lock up random civilians, like Soledad, the bodega owner and others, in places no higher-ups in the government could even know about, and to charge them with "vigilantism". And he also declares martial law, turns the city into a giant civil warzone, just to distract the public from finding out his "business dealings".

So in S2 finale of BA, when Matt tells Fisk that he believes he loves this city, I found this line very inappropriate, because the "philanthropic" image of Fisk was never delivered both in the original show and BA. Matt has dedicated his life to actually helping the city, both as a lawyer (defending regular civilians and victims of men like Fisk), and as a vigilante (going after criminals the law failed to apprehend), while Fisk always did completely opposite things. So how come Matt can say such a thing to Fisk, if he's never done anything good for the city, he just happens to be delusional enough to think that he's some hero helping it? Does Fisk really care about the city, or is that a lie that he tells himself and the public just to justify the horrible things he does?
