Hi,
we’re four guys, and we’ve put together Westminster’s restaurant scene in an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you see two places side by side (for example Famille vs. Kachina Southwestern Grill), you choose the place you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list gets over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m continuously cleaning up the data.

Here’s the iPhone version, with categories that actually fit Westminster’s food scene:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version (finally live):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Westminster (I live in Gothenburg). I’m not collecting data, not selling anything, and the app does not use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few different subreddits because we now support more regions, and I genuinely want honest feedback from people who actually know the area.

Nice price in Dearborn

Does anyone know where Nice Price gets their incense? They smell PHENOMENAL! I would love to get it from there but the drive is too long for me so it’ll be more convenient to purchase online. I searched the name of the incense on google and couldn’t find anything. Any ideas?

Considering Relocating out of Texas to Michigan

Hi/Salaam everybody,

Slightly long read ahead.

Muslim of Pakistani descent here and have spent the majority of my life in Texas with a few years in the Midwest already. Texas has thriving Muslim communities across the state, but recent moves by the state government are working on making Texas a more pseudo official Christian state with pushes for Christianity to be emphasized in schools (10 commandments being posted, mandated prayer, curriculum changes white washing history and disparaging other religions other than Christianity and Judaism, etc.), the governor going after Islamic organizations declaring them terrorist organizations, there's always the "radical Islam" boogeyman trope being used in political ads and so on. Texas is at forefront on challenging the federal government on its influence on states.

Due to the overarching control of the Texas GOP, any sort of political challenge is nearly impossible and has been that way my entire life. I've gotten to a point where I am unsure if this will be a safe place to raise my family and I am exhausted of having essentially no political voice and just accepting this rhetoric as the norm since 2001.

I've been looking to go somewhere that has a strong Muslim presence and where politically I have more leverage. I'm mostly looking for either confirmation or push back on my line of thinking and I want to gather how daily life in Dearborn/metro Detroit for a typical Muslim family is and how local/state politics there engage with Muslims/minorities. I understand that Dearborn Muslims are predominantly Arab, but my main focus is on the local environment and the comfort of being Muslim. I do get that now where I live on the day to day, but there's still this looming sense of being a target of state politics.

Do you want to sit down with Abdul El-Sayed?

I'm a producer at More Perfect Union and am working on a video with Abdul El-Sayed. We'll be filming a roundtable discussion with him on July 8th in Detroit and I'm looking for folks who would be down to talk with him on camera about a variety of issues. I'm primarily looking for people who are on the fence about whether to vote for him and would like to have a genuinely engaging conversation.

Please comment here if you're interested or you can reach me at mae@perfectunion.us

Dearborn drivers

Dearborn drivers need to learn how to turn left on a red light. I drive outer drive down to Southfield every day, and there is a dedicated left turn light. Allen Park police sit in the parking lot behind Starbucks and catch people all the time. I’m tired of people sitting on their horn because I refuse to turn when the light is red. Also, there is only one left to turn lane and the sign clearly marks it that way. I got a ticket for going to the middle lane and turning left, even though it’s allowed if you’re going in the other direction.

International medical graduate looking for a short term accomodation in Dearborn, Michigan.

Hi everyone,

I'm a medical graduate from Pakistan who will be coming to Dearborn for a clinical observership at Corewell Health Dearborn from mid-July to early August. I won't have a car, so I'm looking for affordable short-term housing within walking distance of the hospital or near public transportation.

As I'm visiting on a limited budget, I'm especially interested in a spare room, student sublet, room rental, or any other low-cost short-term accommodation.

If anyone has suggestions or knows of an available room, I'd be very grateful. Thank you!

Gents of this city, How do you all prevent the hair loss from hard water here in Dearborn?

I'm here for last one month and the hair loss has been VERY aggressive. It feels like I'll go back home bald when I return.

PLEASE tell me a way to prevent this much hair loss, if you've got anything.

Thank you.

Biking

Is biking throughout eastern Dearborn from home to work and back doable if the distance is 15-20 minutes away by bike. Do people do this regularly? Are winters difficult? Any help is appreciated as I don’t drive.

Animal abuse in Dearborn

Have you all heard of Singin Kai Nelson and what he did to his adopted dog, Ice? I’m devastated and cried tears for poor Ice. I called the shelter to confirm if Ice came from there and I confirmed he did. The staff is all shaken that the pos broke ice’s skull, his jaws and his nasal cavity. He had to be humanely euthanized because of it. I’m doing a gofundme for the shelter. If any of you is as outraged as I am, pls donate and share. It’s in Ice’s memory

Looking for a place like a cafe or something to hang and catch up with an old friend.

The title probably sounds goofy but I'm looking for a place around Downriver or just out that would be a good place for two old friends to hang out and talk and catch up for a while but not a bar atmosphere. Something indoors. Thanks in advance!

Gyms with Childcare?

Looking for a gym that has reliable childcare for toddlers. We used Lifetime for a while, but since having going back to work it's way too busy by the time we get out to WB or Canton in the evenings. I'm too tired that late in the day to wait for machines or deal with the crowd hanging out. Baby is NOT in the mood for the drive home after either. Any recommendations more local to Dearborn?

I just need basic resistance machines, treadmills and reliable clean childcare.

Apartments in Eastern/Downtown Dearborn

I’m gonna try this again but does anyone know of any studio or 1 bedroom apartments available on the eastern/downtown side of the city? I’m trying to find a place I could rent for no more than $850 a month. I’ve reached out the Peabody Management site and they say they have none available but then was told they’re in the process of going to court for a few issues. I’ve looked on Zillow, Facebook marketplace and Craigslist. I don’t know what to do.

Mobile Car detailing Services

Hey everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself to the community.

I’m local and recently started a mobile car detailing business around the area.

I’m not here to spam or push sales—just wanted to let people know I’m around if anyone ever needs detailing or just want to hear a free quote!

Are There Any Quiet Remote Work Spots Around Detroit/Dearborn?

I have to be in the Detroit/Dearborn area once a week for a doctor’s appointment, thankfully I work remotely, so I want to take advantage of that. I work in tech and I’m in meetings pretty frequently, so I want to be courteous to those around me while also finding a place that isn’t too loud or chaotic, like a busy coffee shop.

I know Teams and Zoom have features that help filter background noise, but unfortunately my meetings are over the phone. Are there any good places where I could work remotely for a few hours? Do any of the Detroit/Dearborn libraries have rooms that can be booked? If not in Detroit/Dearborn, are there any nearby areas you’d recommend?
