I replaced the front wheel bearings on my 2000 M5. All the videos I watched on the subject said that at the least the pinch clamp holding the strut had to be loosened and the drop link removed in order to lower the bearing/hub away from the strut to access the bolts to remove the bearing/hub assembly. Some of the videos went so far as to completely disassemble the front suspension including removing the strut from the car.
I did the job without disturbing the suspension geometry or requiring a new wheel alignment by using a stubby socket on the most difficult to reach bolt and by removing that bolt last so I could move the bearing/hub assembly away from the strut as the bolt loosened instead of the bolt head backing into the strut.
