Feature requests and work(s) in progress for Epistles?

I would really like a Epistles mail to work out for me as an alternative to Spark; I started using it yesterday and so far the impression is not very good.

I've posted here on Reddit already a few times, and sent a message or two through the website, but the list of issues I'm encountering is growing literally by the minute as I use Epistles across iOS and Mac and it's not worth a unique post each time. Is there somewhere I can see the issues raised already and that are being addressed?

Bugs: Drafts needs a lot of work.

Having a lot of issues with drafts. Drafts appearing to not save when I hit save then showing up only after I completely close Epistles and re-open it along with getting multiple copies of the draft, drafts I've deleted showing back up, To: and CC: not always searching contacts, inability to change the From: , buttons like Move and Labels not working (if they aren't ment to work they shouldn't be visible or grayed out at the least).

Edit: Better in v1.5.2

A few small things: I would also say that it would be great if the accounts list in the left Accounts Pane would stay in the order you put them in - I find I have to put the accounts back in my preferred order regularly.

Edit: Solved in v1.5.2

The red box on the right is the composition window, which lists the accounts in a different order than the Accounts Pane when choosing which account to send an email from. It would be nice if these would match.

Edit: Solved in v1.5.2

Lastly, when adding a contact to the To: or CC: fields I would think that the auto fill should put a "," (comma) at the end of each contact so that a user can type quickly without having to manually add a comma after each contact.

Edit: Solved in v1.5.2

BUG: Deleting drafts from overview also deletes whole thread.

I've just tried finding out why exactly some e-mail (replies) are always black-on-white-text on dark mode, so created a lot of empty drafts. Obviously, Epistles also auto-saves empty drafts when going 'Back' without typing anything. Went to 'Drafts', and since I don't need my fake drafts, selected all and deleted them.

As opposed to other e-mail clients, not only my drafts, but the whole threads got deleted. I'm glad I saw it before they disappeared forever…

Bug: E-Mails with attached PDF open Save window(s)

Was here on 1.4.0, is still here with 1.4.4: When opening an e-mail with a PDF attachment, Epistles auto-opens a Save-as Explorer dialogue window—for each attachment. Meaning, if you have four PDFs attached to an e-mail, it will auto-open four windows.

Archived Email - Where does it disappear to?

Have been testing out the app for a week now and trying to figure out how ot view archived emails. I click on archive, and the email is gone (somewhere), but no way in the world I can figure out how to view this email again.

I can see an Archive folder at the bottom of the folder list, but it is always empty.

Can anyone please shed some light on this feature?

Unable to save signatures

I am unable to save signatures. When I click "Save" it shows the save message, but when I go back in, it has defaulted to the one generated by the application. It happens on PC, Mac and Web.

Bugs Android: Scrolling inside e-mails, or cannot scroll up again

While feverishly trying to find a singular e-mail that I must have lost while trying out Epistles (the rest of the e-mails from the thread are still there), I had hope I'd find it in the Android version, perchance due to missing syncs. Nope, it's gone.

And while browsing through e-mail threads, I once again realised that sometimes an e-mail stays in place, but the actual scrolling is inside the e-mail body, as if that div had an overflow:scroll rule. It's hard to get to the next e-mail in the thread then, as fast scrolling appears to do nothing, and the big header asking whether I want to allow images already takes away valuable screen estate. Sometimes even when scrolling, the text would jump, and it's even harder to get to the bottom, as the bottom of the e-mail is constantly re-defined. Now, adding to the confusion is the behaviour on Android that, on top of that, a tap somewhere on the e-mail can lead to no movement at all - you can't scroll up or down. I suspect it's simply tapping on the HTML content of an e-mail that triggers the no-escape behaviour.

No idea. And I'm running out of patience. I know you value my input, but most of these things can be found by using the app, and I don't even do it productively and rather superficially. Not all of the issues are system-related, and could have been identified through basic structured research and tests. Some things, like auto-rising e-mail counts in threads with ghost e-mails solely in Epistles, although there are no new replies (one thread of mine has 21 replies, Epistles claims it's 36!), defunct read receipts or broken DAV support, have been here since 1.0. And from the looks of it, you rather relied on some UI template than a real UI/UX designer, as so many UI and UX flaws and real issues - aside from things that are just based on taste - still exist and have to be pointed out for you to work on them. It's been a week since you released Epistles, and with every new version, there were literally new bugs and issues.

Again, thanks for the kind words, but I think I'm done with Epistles. This feels like work, and unpaid after all. I hope you'll gain some deeper insights not only into the technical difficulties of running a modern e-mail client with calendar and contacts, but also into UI and UX, and you'll make Epistles a worthwhile e-mail client with just an occasional flaw or bug once in a while.

Epistles 1.3.6 Released!

Fixed

  • Escape closes the composer from the message body too, not just the header fields (Windows, Linux, web).
  • A single-key search shortcut no longer types its own character into the search box (Windows, Linux, web).
  • Personal Microsoft accounts (Outlook.com / Hotmail / Live) stop constantly asking you to re-verify your login.
  • An account stuck asking to reconnect on every launch now cleans itself up (all platforms).
  • A repeating background error tied to the Apple Watch is silenced (iPhone).
  • The "SUBJECT" label in the composer no longer breaks across two lines (iPhone, iPad).
  • Multi-day events show on every day they span (all platforms).
  • IMAP mail bodies load again when the connection drops, instead of hanging and draining the battery (all platforms, most visible on the newest iOS).
  • The subject and sender in an open email use the system font (iPhone, iPad, Android).
  • Deleted Gmail messages stay deleted.
  • An email's body can no longer appear under a different email's name.
  • Read and unread mail are easier to tell apart in dark mode.
  • A CalDAV/CardDAV account set up on one computer now works on your others.
  • The address books you choose when adding a CalDAV/CardDAV account are the ones you get.
  • "Syncing…" now means Epistles is actually syncing (Windows, Linux, web, Android, iPhone).
  • An Outlook account whose sign-in expires can be signed back in (Android, iPhone, Mac).
  • A quick trackpad swipe registers on the first try (Mac).
  • The "show unread only" button in the message-list header works again (Mac, Windows, Linux, web).
  • Search stays where you left it (Mac, Windows, Linux, web).

Bug: IMAP Authenticate failed: Max. no. of connections exceeded

This is a new one, and I honestly never had this with any other e-mail client. Apart from e-mail threads with empty doubles and triples and quadruples of e-mails, I'm now getting a warning on Android:

>IMAP AUTHENTICATE failed: NO [LIMIT] Maximum number of connections from user+IP exceeded (mail_max_userip_connections=15)

Epistles 1.3.0 released!

Improvements

  • iCloud is one account now, not two. Adding iCloud has always connected mail, calendars, and contacts from a single app-specific password — but it showed up as two separate entries in the account list (a mail account and a "DAV" account), which read as clutter at best and a bug at worst. The pair now appears as a single iCloud entry: calendars and contacts live inside the account's own settings under "Calendars & Contacts," complete with the per-calendar toggles that used to hide on the second row. Removing the account removes both halves together (the confirmation says so), and a smaller "Remove calendars & contacts" action inside the account covers the case where you only want mail.
  • iCloud calendars & contacts now announce themselves when they fail to connect and offer a Retry.
  • A single "Reading pane" setting: Right, Bottom, or Off. Settings → General now has one three-way control for where the message preview lives, instead of hunting for the two separate toggles in the list header (a Windows user rightly called the old arrangement inconvenient).
  • Choose what happens after deleting or archiving with the reading pane off. New setting next to the one above: "Next message" (the current behavior — keep reading) or "Back to list" (return to the message list, as several list-first mail clients do). Per-device, so your desktop and laptop can differ.

Fixed

  • The event list under the mini calendar now follows you when you change months (desktop calendar and the Mac menu-bar calendar).
  • The calendar no longer crushes a full month grid into a sliver on foldables and iPad portrait.
  • The text cursor is visible again in the composer's To/Cc/Bcc, Subject, and Secure Send fields on the Mac's dark themes.
  • New messages are now sent from your chosen Default account, not the first one you added.
  • A signature's plain-text version no longer leaks HTML tags into sent mail.
  • In the no-preview layout, clicking the folder you're already in now takes you back to the message list.
  • Mac swipe actions now follow your settings — left means left, right means right. With "Natural scrolling" turned on (the Mac default), the trackpad deltas macOS delivers are inverted relative to your finger direction, and the swipe code read them raw, so the configured left/right actions fired swapped on the Mac while the same synced settings worked correctly on iPhone and iPad.
  • Mac swipes activate on the first try on the message under your pointer.
  • The unread badge now simply shows how many unread emails you have (all platforms).
  • Coming back to a draft no longer adds a second signature.
  • Self-hosted CalDAV/CardDAV servers that live under a path (Baikal, Nextcloud, and friends) can finally connect.
  • A revoked iCloud app-specific password no longer strands calendars & contacts in silence.
  • Snoozing actually moves the email out of the inbox now.
  • The app no longer starts on the Unified Inbox and then jumps to a single account's inbox a few seconds later (desktop & web).

TestFlight beta program

Can you use TestFlight for beta updates? This is the best way to push the app updates to users to test out. Otherwise it’s days before we see the next release on the App Store.

Bug: E-mails suddenly show 13 years old message in current support thread

Funny, but when I open an e-mail thread with you ('Epistles 1.3.2 log (only showing as black window)'), my last reply shows a Twitter notification e-mail from 2013 instead of my actual reply. As it stands, I'm sure I didn't send you this e-mail, and I can see on another client that the body of the e-mail is indeed as I sent it. Windows 1.3.6.
