KNAS42 is out: 90s cable TV for any device with a browser, self-hosted in Docker
I've been working on this for a little bit and finally put it on GitHub. It's called KNAS42. It runs in Docker on your NAS or server and turns any TV, computer or phone with a browser into a retro cable box using your channels built in ErsatzTV, it can even be added to your home screen in iphone to work like its own dedicated app (the gif is a bit choppy in the media section but when it’s actually running everything runs extremely smooth). It’s very similar to fieldstation42 but the benefit is this can run on any device with a web browser instead of having a dedicated device for each tv you want your cable tv on.
What’s in it:
Cable box: a retro TV guide (plus a few 2000s styles), channel banners, static between channels. Works with a TV remote, a game controller, a mouse wheel or swiping on your phone.
Weather channel: current conditions, the local and extended forecast, hourly, a moving radar loop, a rain outlook map and sunrise/moon times. Local and national headlines (only from the last few hours) and smooth jazz from your own music folder.
Sports channel: live scores for your teams with the ball on the field, play-by-play, team stats, a cheer screen when you score and a countdown to the next game. Optional live radio too.
"We'll be right back" screen: trivia, Did You Know facts, On This Day and what's coming up next.
ErsatzTV support: your own channels show up in the guide with descriptions and artwork. It also records the break screen into filler clips so your shows start right on the :00 and :30.
Holiday looks: snow at Christmas, bats at Halloween, fireworks on the 4th, etc. Turns on by itself by the date.
Customizing: 10 color themes, 18 fonts, your own logos, and a volume leveler so channels don't jump in loudness.
Setup: drop the folder on your NAS, create a project in Docker, deploy, then open http://your-ip:8642/tv. There's nothing else you have to set up. It figures out your town for the weather by itself, and everything else is optional on a setup page. No accounts, no API keys, free and open source.
