Finally found a vendor that makes LED neon signs that don't flicker on camera

Finally found a vendor that makes LED neon signs that don't flicker on camera

i've been in set dec in the vancouver film industry for a while now and we always need neon signs from time to time for our sets.

before we used to do glass neon but they're really fragile, hard to transport, and have bulky transformers so we switched to LED. but the problem with LED is that it always flickers on camera when we do camera testing no matter what shutter speed we use, i've tried out a few vendors (from etsy, amazon, and overseas) and it's always the same thing.

then i FINALLY found a local vancouver LED neon sign vendor called Nightglow, we did multiple camera test with the lighting team today and there's absolutely no flicker!! we've also tested it with different brightness levels too and no flicker either.

anyways just posting in case anyone else runs into the same issues, hopefully this will save you some time! i wish i can attach some photos but unfortunately i can't cause of the NDA

this is the vendor: Nightglow Studio - nightglowstudio.com

WARNING! Unhinged Special FX Makeup Instructor abuses his students (Vancouver)

Hi, I wanted to share my experience in case anyone is considering taking a course with Dallas Harvey at Vancouver FX in Vancouver BC.

https://www.vancouverfx.com/

I attended one of his mask-making classes on May 27, 2026, and had a very upsetting experience with him that left me and the class feeling unsafe. He canceled the class and is now refusing refund requests.

During the class, Dallas Harvey of Vancouver FX arrived late and appeared to have been drinking, as he smelled strongly of alcohol and was out of sorts. Throughout the evening, he repeatedly spoke to students in a hostile and demeaning manner. Among other things, he publicly shamed a student, referring to her personal mask design by saying, "This is embarrassing and shameful. I'm shaming you right now," and later smashed a student's work on the floor and said "figure it out!" and then called the class "the most boring f*cking class" he'd ever had, and told us, "I don't give a shit if you think I'm being mean. This is how the industry is. You're all a bunch of babies." He then starting crying and his assistant had to take him out of the class for around 30 minutes to calm him down. When he returned...his tyraney continued.

Everyone in the room, consisting of mostly young women, were there because they wanted to learn. It was a paid ($1000+) educational course, and the atmosphere became uncomfortable and intimidating... I left feeling genuinely unsafe and have decided not to return, but he eventually cancelled the class moving forward, left a very empty, copy and paste apology/excuse in all of our inboxes.

It's unfortunate because I enjoyed a previous class and expected a professional learning environment. Instead, this experience was the complete opposite... He was verbally abusive and it was unacceptable behavior. Because students have been leaving bad reviews to try and warn the community, he is now refusing refunds to the students.

I'm sharing this so others can make an informed decision before spending their money with him. I believe he should not be allowed to instruct. He is unfit.

I have since reached out to many people in the SFX Makeup community who have reported similar, negative experiences with Dallas. He refuses to take accountability and there's been reports of similar behavior from a decade ago!

If anyone else attended that class or has had a similar experience, I'd be interested in hearing from you.

Built a free tool to help Canadian filmmakers find grants/funding and looking for feedback

Hey everyone,

I'm a Vancouver based filmmaker and actor, and over the past few months I've been working on a project called GetGreenlit.

One thing that always frustrates me is how difficult it is to figure out which grants are actually relevant to your project. There are dozens of programs across Canada, all with different eligibility requirements, deadlines, and application processes.

So I built a platform designed to help Canadian filmmakers discover grants and funding opportunities that fit their projects. All you have to do is create an account, enter your project type, budget, and a few other details, and you'll be matched with the best funding opportunities that fit your project. And it’s totally free to use.

https://getgreenlit.ca

We just launched this week and I'm looking for feedback from other filmmakers.

If you're working on a short film, feature, documentary, web series, or any screen-based project, I'd love for you to check it out and let me know what you think.

Questions, feedback, bugs, feature requests, all more than welcome!

Thanks all and good luck with your projects.

Jobs in film in Vancouver

I just obtained OWP and would like to get a job in film, preferably for a studio, small firm in an office - not on set. I have been an assistant producer / producer for 5 years working in physical production. How easy it is for a non-Canadian to get into the industry with only European-based experience?
