What actually happened? Let us turn to the scientific data. Geologists, hydrologists, and climatologists all agree that a devastating flood occurred in Mesopotamia around 2900 BCE. The following factors contributed to the catastrophe:

1. The territory where the Sumerian cities were located (the south of modern-day Iraq) is a lowland with an extremely gentle slope—only 2 to 8 centimeters per kilometer. It is an absolutely flat plain.

2. The Tigris and Euphrates rivers flow here at or even slightly above the level of the surrounding plain, held back by natural levees (river banks).

In the spring of ~2900 BCE, a sudden warming occurred in the north, and an anomalously rapid melting of winter snows began in the Taurus Mountains and the Armenian Highlands (where the headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates are located).

Simultaneously, a powerful, prolonged cyclone struck Mesopotamia. In Sumerian texts, this storm is described as total darkness and an unceasing hurricane with rain that lasted for seven days and nights. Mesopotamian storms typically originate in the Mediterranean Sea, pass through the mountains of Syria and Turkey, and move southeast toward the Persian Gulf.

The two great rivers received a colossal volume of water that their banks physically could not contain. A process occurred that hydrologists call avulsion—a sudden and radical change in a river's course. The wall of water breached the river banks, and instead of a regular seasonal overflow, the rivers turned into a giant, single raging torrent tens of kilometers wide.

This torrent rushed across the flat plain at tremendous speed, literally tearing through and submerging mud-brick cities such as Shuruppak, Kish, and Ur. They simply dissolved in the water within a matter of days, as the homes of ordinary Sumerians were built from sun-dried clay and reeds.

Due to the complete absence of high ground, it appears to a person standing in the middle of the plain that the hills beyond the horizon have vanished underwater, even if the flood depth is only 2–3 meters. To an observer, the water literally "covered the whole world"...

For the Sumerians, Mesopotamia (the valley between the Zagros Mountains and the Syrian Desert) was their entire known world. When both great rivers simultaneously overflowed due to torrential rains and melting snow, the water flooded the plain all the way to the horizon, destroying fields, homes, and livestock. In the eyes of the survivors, it looked like the destruction of the entire Earth.

However, in neighboring regions (for instance, in the city of Eridu, just a few dozen kilometers from Ur), there are no traces of this specific flood. This indicates that the gigantic overflows of the Tigris and Euphrates inundated only the lowlands.

In the 1920s and 1930s, archaeologists excavating the ancient Sumerian cities of Ur, Kish, Uruk, and Shuruppak discovered a thick layer of clean clay, sand, and river silt at a depth of several meters underground. It ranged from 40 to 60 cm thick (and up to 2.5 meters in Ur). This layer contained no human traces—no pottery shards, no bones, no charcoal. Beneath this clay layer lay the remnants of older pottery (from the Jemdet Nasr period), while above it were the cultural layers of the later Early Dynastic Sumerian era. This is direct proof that a colossal, unprecedented flood took place in Mesopotamia.

In Sumerian myths, King Ziusudra ruled the city of Shuruppak. It is precisely in Shuruppak (modern Tell Fara in Iraq) where archaeologists found the most distinct, destructive layer of river deposits dating exactly to ~2900 BCE. The city was indeed flooded and destroyed by the river element, which completely aligns with the text of the clay tablets.

The Sumerians did not lie. All questions go to those who wrote the Bible.

That does not mean the Egyptians were remembering a technological civilization from 100,000 years ago.

But myths are not technical archives either. If human societies had existed across vastly deeper periods of prehistory, later cultures might have misunderstood whatever fragments survived. A ruined structure could become the house of a god. An ancient catastrophe could become a cosmic battle.

After 100,000 years, almost nothing recognizable might remain. Metals would corrode. Buildings would collapse and deserts would erase the surfaces.

Nuclear chemistry is harder to erase. A reactor can leave long-lived uranium-236, iodine-129, and neutron-capture signatures in samarium and gadolinium, precisely the kinds of traces that have yet to be searched for in Fayum.

Perhaps the story is exactly what geology says it is.

But if an unknown civilization had existed in the deep human past, almost everything we now call myth would be a distorted memory, and almost everything physical would have become indistinguishable from the landscape itself.

Only a few unusual fingerprints might remain.

So, since the Bible is clearly not the place to look for answers regarding the destruction of the ancient proto-civilization, let us turn to the original source—the Eridu Genesis. This is the core Sumerian text (dating back to around 1900–1600 BCE) where the story of the Great Flood makes its first appearance.

As the text reveals, the supreme god Enlil grew furious with humanity not because of their sins, but simply because of the sheer noise they made while building cities and canals, which kept the gods from sleeping. For this, the council of gods made a final, ‘irreversible’ decision to completely wipe out the ‘seed of mankind.’ Just like that. They multiplied, they build, they disturb our sleep... Destroy them all! A responsible decision, indeed—they even had to call a council for it.

Evidently, praying to such gods was utterly pointless. They made decisions on a whim, however they pleased. There is absolutely no moral foundation here, nor any opportunity to follow divine commandments to avoid angering them. This makes them look less like gods and more like some even more ancient, powerful race that couldn't care less about humans—one that could calmly sentence multiplying humans to total annihilation just so they wouldn't be a nuisance...
