Anyone else think Shipwreck was one of the most underrated G.I. Joe characters?
I was rewatching some old G.I. Joe episodes recently and honestly… Shipwreck might be one of the best-written characters in the whole series.
Most people remember him as “the sailor with the parrot,” but his backstory was actually pretty solid. His real name was Hector X. Delgado, born in Chula Vista, California, and he joined the Navy super young after growing up near the San Diego Navy Yards. Unlike a lot of cartoon military characters from the 80s, he actually felt believable.
What I always liked was that he hated overcomplicated tech in combat. His whole philosophy was basically:
>
Simple and direct.
And Polly honestly made the character even better. The bird wasn’t just comic relief — sometimes Polly was smarter than half the team 😂
Especially in the Sunbow cartoon where he’d repeat naval terms, sing embarrassing songs about Shipwreck, or randomly refuse to tell the Joes where Shipwreck was.
I also recently learned there’s speculation that his look was inspired by George Harrison, while the personality/voice was more based on Jack Nicholson in The Last Detail. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
I’ve been collecting some vintage G.I. Joe stuff again lately and found a few cool Shipwreck items here if anyone’s into that kind of thing: gijoeforsale.com
Curious where Shipwreck ranks for other people here. Top tier Joe character or just nostalgia carrying him?
