How do I stop my GIMP drawings distorting when I add them to Surface Tracker?

I am working on a project that requires me to create textures in GIMP, export them as PNGS, and map them onto moving objects via the Surface Tracking feature in DaVinci. However, I have found that mapping the PNGs onto DaVinci's Surface Tracking feature distorts the texture, turning the soft lines of the original file into thick, hard ones. I’m looking for help on how to get the original line thickness to show up on the model. Thank you very much!

How to create large image while maintaining resolution?

Hope this is a softball, but I am new to design and am having trouble creating a large detailed image that maintains details when zoomed in. Basically I want to create a large fictional map that I can display on my 85" inch TV, but maintain the ability to zoom in on landmasses without it turning into a pixelated mess.

I've tried scaling up the image to UHD, but that doesn't seem to help. The other option I was thinking could be to adjust the image print resolution, but it seems like the PPI is directly linked to the print size, and there is no way to increase the scale of the image without cratering PPI. Do I just have to start with the canvas size set in inches to match my TV? Surely there must be away to adjust existing images for this purpose?

Is GIMP suitable software for creating/designing exhibition panels (museum, gallery, etc.)

Hey, I am working on some graphic design for museum exhibition (exposition?) and usually I just use simple online Canva. Despite its ease to use, it is very bare-bones tool so I thought maybe I could do it in GIMP. However, when I work with such big files (700x1000 mms) my PC is barely able to handle it. Hell, even GIMP ordered warning that I am working with file that is 1 GB in size. And I need 15 panels (so 15 files). Is there a way around or should I opt for another software? Seem like Inkscape is handling this fine (perhaps cuz its vector based?) but then I am not sure how Inkscape handles photographs and such stuff.

Sorry if this is wrong sub.

Thanks in advance.

Why does gimp export photos darker?

For some reason when I edit a pic on GIMP and export it, it is wayyy darker than it was originally. How do I go about fixing this? (I have no idea what 90% of the stuff means so a “dumb” explanation would be helpful 😂)
Attached is what the photo looks like in gimp NO EDITS AT ALL and then what it looks like exported still with NO EDITS.
Any help is greatly appreciated

  1. Is what it looks like fresh into GIMP
  2. Is what the box looks like when I export
  3. Is the exported pic with no edits at all

Can't select by color same way I did before latest update.

Before update I would chose select by color and click that color, if I do that now, nothing happens. Only way I can get it to select a color is by clicking on color and dragging across it and it's very annoying.

I have tried resetting preferences and changing the threshold and nothing works.

Had to resort to sudo xkill to shutdown a frozen Gimp instance. Now Gimp takes 15 seconds to open and has a white instead of brown icon

How do I highlight only the outline of an image?

Hi, I have never used this kind of software before and I'm completely lost. I have this image of a map and I need to extract only the outline of the continent and islands. How can I do this?

Make online manual easier to find for people without English knowledge

I go to gimp.org click on docs. So far so good.

But this.

>The manual is also available online on a dedicated website.

Is not very intuitive for people without English language knowledge.
Please make it more obvious. Maybe a direct link instead of this overview page.

GIMP is broken...

https://preview.redd.it/3oxliazjcsjh1.png?width=1366&format=png&auto=webp&s=b2fc3e66c88a1d1fb2a715a82e8e575ed1bfdda1

For context, I first installed GIMP and for a while, it worked just fine when I fist started it up. Then I tried to add the Photogimp application and since then, I couldn't open it anymore.

I tried uninstalling and re-installing GIMP, removed the Photogimp files, yet I can't fix it. Seems like, it's bricked or something.

Two suggestions regarding the brush.

I would love to have an option where I could use a brush as a selection tool. It would be great for selecting intricate areas smoothly-more fluid than the free select option.

The second suggestion is I would like to be able to toggle the brush size between image pixels and screen pixels. That way, if you're using the brush at let's say forty pixels, and you zoom in, the brush stays at forty pixels on the screen allowing you to focus in on much smaller section of the image without having to manually resize the brush.

These are not my original ideas. it is how it works in Luminar. It makes it very convenient to zoom in and out of a photo and create a selection that is both large in places and intricately detailed around the edges.

The attached video shows just how convenient that feature is when selecting the face on this grotesque.

REVISED: Two great features about GIMP I did not know about.

Erase section to show 2nd image that is behind the first?

I'm new to GIMP and using it to make thumbnails, how would I remove this black triangle of the front image so that I can see the image that is layered behind it? I thought a transparent eraser would do the trick, but I don't see that as an option anywhere?

Anyone know how to get a brush similar to the blending brushes they have in Photoshop?

In photoshop they have this brush tool that blends colors in real time while you use the brush. I don't remember if it was exactly called the blending brush but that's always what I called it. I don't have photoshop anymore and started using gimp just recently and they only have the classic brush tool and not a blending brush tool that I know of. Does anyone know any plugin brushes that could work similar to the one in photoshop or any suggestions on how I can get similar results?
