This Tiny Ship...

This Tiny Ship...

Just outside my small rural Oregon town, this little boat sits in a field right next to the road everyone takes to the slightly larger town nearby where we get groceries and stuff. Nobody seems to know why it's there, it just is. So I took a picture of it, did a little AI retouching, and posted the results on the town's Facebook page. Big hit! Turns out everybody was thinking the same thing all along…

The original theme song to Gilligan's Island was a calypso song written by John Williams (of Star Wars fame and much more) and sung by creator Sherwood Schwartz. It was replaced before it left the “pilot” stage.

The first two pilots were rejected. It was on the third pilot that the theme was replaced to the familiar song we know today.

Interestingly, this original theme refers to a

"6 Hour Trip," rather than a "3 Hour Tour."

As in the season 1 theme song, this one omits the Professor and Mary Ann in favor of "the rest." Unlike the season one theme, this one also omits Ginger.

Dusty’s Trail

Has anyone seen the GI clone Dusty’s Trail? It’s basically GI in the old west, with a lost wagon train trying to find their way back to civilization. With all the talk about a lost fourth season of GI I wonder if some of the potential storylines were recycled here

Why did Gilligans Island have to end?? Genuinely miss it so much!!

Hello, I’m 19 years old, and I grew up watching Gilligan’s Island (1964–1967) when I was younger. I’ve been thinking about what happened to the original Gilligan’s Island era and that feeling of watching the show when it was such a big part of everyday life, especially seeing Gilligan, the Skipper, Mary Ann, Ginger, the Professor, Mr. and Mrs. Howell, and the rest of the characters together with the original cast, the hilarious storytelling, the unforgettable jokes, the crazy island adventures, and the distinctive atmosphere that made the series feel so special.

Now that the original Gilligan’s Island era has ended, the era that many people grew up with feels like it has passed. The stories, the atmosphere, the people who worked on the show, and the feeling surrounding the series have all moved forward. Many of the creators, writers, directors, crew members, and actors have gone on to different projects and different parts of their lives away from the original series. It feels strange because I grew up with this show, and now everything has just… changed and moved on.

I remember watching Gilligan’s Island when I was younger, and everything felt so simple. I could just sit down and enjoy Gilligan, the Skipper, Mary Ann, Ginger, the Professor, Mr. and Mrs. Howell, and the rest of the characters without thinking about anything else. Back then, it felt like the show would always be there, and I don’t understand why they couldn’t just keep making new Gilligan’s Island episodes forever or why the original series eventually had to stop and move on.

I also wonder why watching Gilligan’s Island now doesn’t feel exactly the same anymore. The episodes are still the same, but the feeling is different. It feels like something is missing, almost like the show feels unfamiliar even though I remember it so clearly.

Why do television series like Gilligan’s Island eventually come to an end? If people loved them for years, why can’t they just continue forever with the same feeling? Why do the people who make them have to move on, and why do audiences grow up and stop experiencing things the same way?

It feels strange knowing that the original Gilligan’s Island era I grew up with is over, that the world has moved on, and that chapter feels closed, even though it once felt like it would always be there.

Maybe that is part of what makes the show so meaningful. It did not have to last forever for the memories to last. The episodes remained the same, but I changed. The world around me changed. The people who made the show moved on to other things, and the time in my life when I watched Gilligan’s Island without worrying about growing up eventually became part of the past.

I suppose that is why it can feel so strange to return to Gilligan’s Island years later. I’m not only watching Gilligan, the Skipper, Mary Ann, Ginger, the Professor, Mr. and Mrs. Howell, and the others again. I’m also remembering the person I was when I first watched them. The episodes can bring that feeling back for a moment, but they cannot completely recreate the time and place in which those memories were originally made.

The original Gilligan’s Island era may be over, and there may never be another show that feels exactly like the original. But that does not mean the era disappeared completely. It still exists in the memories of everyone who grew up with the show. The episodes ended, but the part of childhood they represent does not have to disappear with them.

The last day of shooting for the pilot episode of "Gilligan's Island" was Nov 23, 1963, the day after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. That day, they filmed the S.S. Minnow leaving Honolulu Harbor for the Three Hour Tour; the US flag in the background at half mast in honor of JFK.

A Little Something I Wrote Recently

"Before the Storm"

Hi Audrey

Greetings from the South Pacific!  Hope all is well in Iowa.  Got here yesterday afternoon and I’m just getting settled in.  Jet lag hasn’t been as bad as I expected.  Found our cruise ship last night and spent the night on it.  We take off later today for the first of a set of small trips.

The boat is smaller than I expected.  Need to talk to my travel agent about this (lol).  I’ve met several people onboard and I seem to be the only “normal” one, if you get my drift.

There’s a retired banker couple in the cabin immediately next to mine.  They seem nice enough, but talk about glitz!  And they jabber about it incessantly - The Hamptons this and the chauffeur that.  Nothing I can relate to, unfortunately.

Just met the captain.  Nice guy, but not my type, if you know what I mean.  On the heavy side and too old for me, but he likes to laugh and is very friendly.

I did meet one good looking single guy and flirted a bit with him.  Not sure if he even noticed, though.  He’s some kind of engineer and says he teaches at a university.  Probably the type who likes his test tubes more than women (just my luck).

Last, there’s my roommate.  More than anyone else I’ve met, she makes me feel like I don’t fit.  I think she’s some kind of model or actress or something.  Looks like she stepped out of the pages of Vogue.  Always in an evening gown and she even wore jewelry to breakfast this morning!  Pretty stuck on herself and I feel like she looks down on me.  Her behavior makes me think, “Having great time. Wish you were her” (lmao - wish she was you instead of her).  Fortunately we’re only going to be together for a day or so.

Well, that’s pretty much it here.  Weather good so far, but storm predicted for tonight.  Hope it doesn’t make me seasick.  Hugs and kisses to everyone back there.

Mary Ann

PS:  I almost forgot.  There is one other sort of oddly cute, single guy here, but he’s a hopeless case, if there ever was one.  I think he’s the first mate.  Every time he screws up, which is often, he yells out, “Skipperrrrrrrrrrrrr”.  Strange name too - Gilligan.

Can someone help me find this clip

Hello everyone, my name is Alex, and I make electronic music. I am looking for a clip from Gillian’s island where gilligan is having a dream in which he says something across the lines of “I don’t want jewels I just want to catch butterflies”
If anyone could tell me where I could find this clip or send it to me I would greatly appreciate it.
