Stage 3/continental R turbo swap - mk8 GTI. Initial impressions…

I just picked up my 2024 autobahn after getting APRs Oem plug and play continental golf R turbo swap and a stage 3 ecu flash (93 octane low torque). I am FBO and originally was flashed stage 1 high torque ECU. My initial feeling is it’s a night and day difference!!

The stage 1 w/ intercooler, intake, exhaust made the car quick and was explosive in low/midrange. But one of the reasons I went with Continental golf R turbo upgrade was I didn’t want to lose the OEM low and midrange torque feel and I can say it’s even better and much smoother overall with the R upgrade. The Continental turbo just feels effortless and more powerful through mid range and into gears 5-6 it just keeps going vs falling off like it did on stock turbo. I did a 60-100 roll and it kept pulling to redline whereas the OEM on stage 1 you’d feel it start to fade and drop off around 100-110 mph. Overall I’m very pleased with the initial impression and especially like that there’s clearly a lot more power at the top end without making the car “laggy” at low/midrange which as you know is often the problem with the big turbo swaps on GTIs.

Kudos to APR for a shrewd decision on the Continental which is different than what other companies are offering for their MK8 stage 3 turbo upgrade and big props to Auto Engineering in Lexington, Mass for all their work on my entire build. 👏🙌🙏 🚘

Any good mechanics in montgomery, Al?

Just got some new tires. Got alignment done the only thing the discount tire people could fix was the camber and toe. Need to get this fixed and need to install some aftermarket brake pads soon. Any good mechanics around montgomery and Birmingham and Auburn Alabama. Would greatly appreciate the help. Or anyone even down to install will paid and fed.

MK7 vs MK8?

Why do people prop up the MK7 and bash the Mk8? Very few it seems actually know the internals of the EVO 4 platform. All I hear is infotainment and piano black, and the grill! Yes, there are a few aesthetics that could be better but the reality is the MK8 EA888.4 is a more refined, more reliable and better performing engine/platform. EVO 4 has upgraded fueling, cooling and a better turbo. (Although I still prefer the Continental golf R turbo) which is why I’m doing that swap next week!

The Mk7 GEN 3 platform is very good no doubt but the MK8 is even better in every way and I’m not sure if many realize it yet!!! Yes the infotainment and glossy interior suck but the bottom line is the EA888.4 platform outperforms the MK7 gen 3. Mk8 for me everyday of week including SUNDAY!

You disagree??? Let’s hear some substance why the MK7 is better….

Blown turbo on a brand new mk8 gti 20,000kms

Hey all I’ve come here for a bit of explanation on a very suspicious and weird case.

I’ve had a mk8 gti 2024 here in Australia from brand new. I’ve thrashed it quite often tho not exclusively. It was stock up until 13,000kms when I flashed it with a stage 1 ecu tune by racing line at a local and reputable tuning shop. No issues with it had fun for a while but as most of you can understand you always want more out of it.

Recently I went back for a stage 2 upgrade where the same shop installed an integrated engineering air intake and intercooler along with an xforce downpipe which made me eligible to flash it to the stage 2 software by racing line. Within not even 12 hours of having the car stage 2 the turbo blew. How it happened was I was in sports mode 4th gear and floored it so it shifted to 3rd and I went to 6th gear which was the last thing I saw on my dash before I felt the power go and saw a monsterous cloud of white smoke come out of my exhaust.

I took it back to the tuner who tried putting the blame on me arguing I was going to fast and that I was in 6th gear, in his words “we don’t even hit 6th gear on the drags” and that “that’s way too fast” and I have no “mechanical sympathy”. Straight off the bat from that reaction it tells me he is trying the best he can to not make me suspicious of him. I’ve floored it many times stock and stage 1 and I’ve never come close to any issues whatsoever. Especially considering it’s a brand new car there is no way in hell the turbo would just give out like it did.

I’ve asked a handful of mechanics and tuners what they think of the matter and I’ve only gotten mixed answers. Some suspect it’s a racing line tune pushing too much boost, others say my tuner could have caused it and most are just straight up shocked it even happened and they themselves want to know why.

I still have to wait to get an answer from my tuner on what exactly went wrong and why it happened but in my biased opinion I am not the one who should be paying for this. I’ve considered taking the case to the automotive fair trading of Australia to try and resolve the issue however I need more documentation and evidence which I’ll Aquire all in due time when I get answers from my tuner.

However I’ve come here to see what your guys thoughts are. If you’ve seen this happen before or know anything about what might have went wrong I’d highly appreciate a response.

Thank you all.
