Just bought a ‘22 Golf R

I’m wondering what exactly this is for, I can’t think of anything except maybe an aftermarket part that was taken off by the previous owner?

2024 Golf R Warning Lights

Anyone else have fairly consistent problems with warning lights coming on and then turning off? Or restart the car and they go away? I'd say about every other week I get the bottom three and the drive train warning has happened three times in the last 2-3 weeks

I'm aware of the module in the steering wheel being or going bad, but I haven't had any issues with the warnings most common with that one.

Random warnings I've been getting:

- Drive train warning

- 4k RPM limit warning

- Engine overheat - temp said 262, turned car off and on, and it dropped back to 190's

- Maneuver parking brake function not available

- Rear traffic alert not available

- Parking distance not available

New 8.5 owner

Almost finished the break in period. Brings me back to the early 2000s with my Eagle Talon.

Anyway, I ordered a spare from ShopDAP. I thought it was complete with a tire, turns out it was as described, just a wheel.

Any help on completing this with a tire? Should I just roll over to a tire joint and ask them to set me up?

How does the Unitronic Performance Downpipe sound with stock exhaust?

I have a Mk7.5 R and I am not sold on any particular exhaust upgrade over stock system yet (\*I hate the oval exhaust tips\*).

I am planning to go Unitronic Stage 2 shortly and was wondering if anyone could tell me how much the Unitronic Performance Downpipe changes the exhaust note with the stock exhaust?

Panic Alarm

I usually keep my FOB in the 5th pocket of my pants because it’s fits nicely and doesn’t press into my leg. Today I was was taking a spirit drive on some backroads near my house and when I shifted in my seat it set off the panic alarm, while I was driving?! Why is that a thing when the car is on and moving?!
Ok rant over still love it and ripped some shit up.

PPF Rock dent in fender

Got super unlucky today when driving on the highway and a big rock came across the guard rail and smoked my fender.

Based on the attached photos do you think this is worth removing PPF and getting paintless dent repair or should I just take the PPF off and get another piece put on.

Let me know what you think!

Learning about features that you didnt know about until recently.

So earlier I read about pushing the start button without the brake for a specific purpose.

When i bought the car a year ago, I received a short crash course in all of the technology and features of the car. Of course, only some of it stuck with me with such a short lesson.

My question is, have you mastered most of the modes, functions, and adjustments that the car has to offer? I ask because Mercedes supposedly has a course where they teach buyers all of the functions, so that when you leave, you know how to find everything.

I will give an example. Today in traffic I adjusted my mirror and something that said home lit up, and I thought what is this?

I probably know 50% or less of the features of this car, how about you? Mark 8.5 2025, 8800 miles.

My thoughts after 4000km in a month

Okay where do I start other than I fucking love it?

Well I fucking love it.

It’s a 2026 “base model” with sunroof and Akrapovic exhaust. I picked up this beauty a month ago after saying goodbye to my 2023 WRX, which was the first fun car I’ve had. The car that’s seen my lowest, including being dumped in the front seats, and many drives while crying looking for a tree to hug.

There were a few times where I got so (not really) close to owning a Golf R. Once in grade 12, once in 2021, and 2023 for a MK8. And here we are.

You know what’s weird? I know I’m still young but I think I’m getting old. I no longer look at this car like I did when I was in grade 12 drooling over a Mk7.5. I guess now I know lust vs love.

Sorry it’s been a long day, so here’s a short, poorly written comparison to my ex, the WRX that got away. No hate because I really loved the WRX. It was just time for me to move on.

Pros:

  1. Power duh. It is just much faster than the WRX. Although its power delivery is not as linear as the WRX, it is just day and night. And this is a car that keeps pushing me to push it, although I try to behave.

It is one car that I have to be careful with how much I’m pushing. No. I gotta behave.

  1. Comfort. It’s a lot more comfortable than my WRX. It just feels even more grown up. It is much more refined, despite the stock 19 inch rims that I plan on downsizing. It certainly doesn’t handle rough roads as well as the WRX at high speed. But I’m a lot more comfortable driving this for hours going nowhere just for fun.

I would say though, the stock rims give me constant anxiety. Every time I hit a manhole or pothole, I cringe a little. Can’t wait to put on winter tires and go 18 inch next summer.

Anyways. I know this has been a downgrade compared to MK7. But the interior is a great upgrade from the WRX. Sure it’s smaller but I do appreciate the quality and features like ventilated seats and ambient lighting. And three zones climate control? In a Golf? That’s wild.

Audio on the other hand? Meh. The sub does go deep but it’s not hitting the spot. Looking forward to upgrade.

Lastly, backseat space is tight. Well no backseat whispering for me I guess.

  1. Handling. Oh boy do I LOVE throwing this into the roundabouts even in comfort mode. Surprisingly this feels a lot more planted than the WRX. It certainly doesn’t feel as mechanical, but it somehow feels more playful yet predictable. The rear diff really makes a difference.

However, TBC with its performance in winter. The WRX never let me down once, although I wasn’t a big fan of the Michelin X Ice Snow it was wearing. I shall go back to Viking this time.

  1. Fuel economy. This is far better than the WRX. My average fuel economy on the highway doing 80mph is 30-32mpg vs 24-26mpg. Not bad eh. Even when I’m having fun, I’m still getting better fuel economy. Gonna give the German a thumbs up with the efficiency.

  2. Daily driving. I gotta say I definitely enjoy this more. With my custom mode I have everything set to race, other than drivetrain in comfort. I know it’s numb. But it is good enough for me. I reckon as soon as I downsize to 18 inch I would enjoy it even more. I’d say one thing though. The turning radius sucks.

  3. Appearance. As much as I got used to the WRX’s black plastic around the car, boy this just looks much better. What else to say? At least I don’t look like driving a faster crosstrek.

Anyway. Sorry I’m falling asleep. Will continue more in the comment section.

Resonator Delete

Posting to see if anyone’s had a res delete done and could drop some clips? Getting mine done tomorrow.

Happy to see any, but ideally looking for someone who’s done it on a pre-OPF, manual EU car so I can get a better idea of the difference. I’ve seen a few clips but they all sound pretty different, especially autos and US-spec cars.

Let me know!

Thanks

Joined the club tonight

Picked it up today, a CPO 2023 R with just 10k KM on the odometer. The trim is called "Performance" so no sunroof, no heads up display, no adaptive cruise control, but has the all black 19" rims, the longer/bigger wing, Akrapovic exhaust, DCC and cloth seats. Quite the balanced package of features and performance.

Golf Mk5 R32

Thought I'd get a few quick pics of my Golf R32 while driving through Bala, Ffestiniog, and Snowdonia in Wales.

Had the car a while now and am looking to do a few more upgrades. I've installed a miltek cat back exhaust and forge induction kit as the original intake snapped...

Next on the list are some Shrick 268/264 cams, a DSG and ECU map, a second set of lightweight alloys though I'm not sure what would best suit the R32, and possibly upgrade to haldex blue.

Hopefully after the cams and remap it will be pushing 280-290 BPH.

Best road trip car I’ve owned

The 2nd best was my mk7.5, only because it didn’t have ventilated seats.

White Golf R with "egg" license plate this morning on I-71 north in Columbus

Your exhaust sounds awesome. Also, fuck the guy in the white Nissan SUV that zoomed up to cut you off and then almost hit me coming into my lane.

Is there any way to keep these protectors clean?

They just won’t come clean and I’ve tried a few different products, but I don’t want to mess up the paint. Are you supposed to remove them? Am I just stupid?

I’ve considered just getting a black wrap for the whole bottom door trim to match the other black accents on the car.

Probably a stupid question...

I've seen videos which show starts with valves closed and open to show the different sounds. Maybe it's my MK8, but as far as I know, my car always defaults to start in 'sport' mode (valves half open?) as opposed to race mode where the valves are fully open.

I wasn't sure if there was a setting that could be adjusted to change the mode the car starts in, but if not, how are people able to do open/closed valve starts?
