Not sure if a post like this is allowed, but any of you have ever had this happen before? I guess next time I should keep the little lid on top closed

Update:

Just a little more information for the people who are curious. Obviously I’m not touching the newly created mansion, and letting the new owner do its thing hahah.

Some were also wondering where this was taken, I live in the Netherlands. I think it’s a “blue tit” (but definitely correct me if I’m wrong).

Update 2:

I have been corrected, it’s a great tit.

2026 Nesting - A Second Brood

Remember the last series of videos about the Great Tit brood?

2026 Nesting - Game Over : r/GreatTits

Well, it looks like we're going to have a second brood this year. That's a first for me.

I got a motion alert from the camera in the box, and she's been in there rummaging all morning and bringing in more material.

First video of my resident fledgeling

Look how fluffy and cute it is! Im delighted they visit the proximity of my feeder already. Parents brought to show them over the weekend. I glimpsed 4 of them. 💗🐦

Who needs a nest box when you can have an ashtray, says the blue tit

Not a dove, but a dove-worhty choice of nest location. This blue tit built her nest in an ashtray. Before you feel sorry for her, consider this: This is in a park / recreation area with literally dozens of nest boxes within easy reach. Swipe to see the genius herself!

Interesting detail I have noticed

Hello everyone, I have noticed that orbital feathers under the eye of the great tit are white! The upper feathers (above the eye) are black. I think it is that way to match the white pattern on the birds cheeks. Have you noticed this detail or other interesting peculiarity about the great tits?

I used zoomed in photos from the subreddit for the examples 🐦🤍

Blue Tit waiting to return food to its nest

This little Blue Tit was waiting patiently so it could return to its nest to bring food to its chicks. Don't worry it didn't need to wait long (see last photo).

A few pairs of Blue Tits have taken up residence in the hollow bars on the ceiling of a little shelter inside a nature preserve nearby. Below the nest is a bench and some information boards, so whenever a human was in the shelter the birds waited before bringing back the food. As soon as the humans left the birds quickly dropped of the meal and ventured out again for more food. While we couldn't see the chicks in the nests they were apparently pretty hungry, loudly chirping for more.

2026 Nesting - Game Over

This video shows the last three chicks leaving this morning.

This year was quite protracted. Six of them left on 13 May (and even that was spaced out over the whole day - we had sporadic rain showers). The remaining three remained all day yesterday, and finally left early this morning. There was a lot of enticement by the parents.

If you watch the first part closely, the parent is putting food in their mouths, but then taking it out and flying out of the box with it. It's like using a carrot to lead a donkey - she is trying to lure them out.

Nine fledged out of the original ten eggs, and all of them looked healthy and well-fed (we had a runt last year, which couldn't fly when it left).

As usual, they pooped everywhere and I will have to clean the box in the autumn.

When I get time, I will do a time-lapse of the last three days.
