Fanfic H.O.T.D

A weird time to get into this

So, I knew of this franchise by reputation, but it had largely passed me by. Nothing in particular, just never gave it a fair shot.

But one day, a few weeks back, I stumbled across the DVDs in a charity shop and thought "why not? Worst case, it'll be a laugh."

And you know what? It's not bad at all. The characters are fun and nuanced, running the gambit of flawed but endearing, the action's top notch, the animation (while a little dated with its CGI) is still vibrant, colourful and fun. Personally, I find the hyper sexualisation of the characters is about as appealing as a flesh wound, but the rest of this show stands, to my mind, on it's own merits. So much so, that I immediately went out to purchase the full colour manga just to see what happens after the credits roll, and I'm enjoying what there is.

Each day I came home from work excited to watch the next couple of episodes, which is always a very good sign, especially when so many shows can feel like such a slog.

Which gets me onto why I'm posting this, because it's crazy to think that this fanchise is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, and I only began taking any vested interest in it within the past month.

It's very odd to get this glimpse into a story that so perfectly encapsulates the era it's from, and drew me in so effortlessly. But tragically unlike it's contemporaries which share similarly abrupt endings like Berserk, we'll never get the same kind of reprise.

Food for thought

Highschool of the Dead Shippings by SilverBuller on DeviantArt

I'd like to share an interesting shipping ranking of Highschool of the Dead by SilverBuller, especially the arguments presented. Rankings divided into Top Shippings (who he ships with the character), Ok Shippings (not people he ships with the character, but who he wouldn’t mind), and Low Shippings (people he do not ships with the character). Please note that the rankings and comments you'll read below are his, not mine.

TOP SHIPPINGS

1) Saeko Busujima – >!Of all the girls, Saeko is the most suitable for Takashi. Their personalities and natures mesh together very well, and they just go together perfectly. Takashi completely accepts her darker nature, and has even developed one of his own since the zombie apocalypse began, and the two even seem to find each other’s more brutal nature arousing. Despite the feelings he had for Rei before the world fell apart, his feelings for Saeko have continued to develop and seem to be shifting more and more towards her as they continue to grow closer. And while Takashi seems torn between her and Rei, she’s completely in love with him, even stating that he’s the only one she truly cares about and can’t live without, and Takashi also states that he needs her in his life, and not just because she’s important to the group’s survival. He also says that he’ll take responsibility for anything that happens between them and will always stay with her. It’s even been stated that if Takashi lost her, he would snap, as she seems to be a rock for him, and he would lose his sanity in this zombie infested world if she ever died. Among all the characters, their relationship has progressed the most, and it’s even strongly implied that they became lovers during the night they were alone together in the shrine, this implication being that after the screen faded to black as they leaned in to kiss, but the next morning, Saeko was seen putting her skirt on, something she was wearing the previous night, and they acted like shy teenagers that had just had their first time together afterwards. Then there’s Saeko’s “You’ll take responsibility,” remark the next morning, a phrase very commonly used after two lovers do the deed, something Takashi wholeheartedly agrees to. These two not only look really good together, but are also one of my favorite anime couples, possibly even my favorite. Even the series creator said that he wanted them to end up together and intended for them to be endgame, so that's a final canon couple confirmation right there.!<

2) Rei Miyamoto – >!As the other main love interest for Takashi, Rei seems to have home-field advantage due to them having a relationship before the zombie apocalypse. Takashi was in love with her beforehand, and the two promised to get married when they were little kids, but that was before everything fell apart. But even before that, Rei seemed to move on with Takashi’s best friend, Hisashi Igou, but after he died, she returned to Takashi. She shows clear jealousy towards Saeko and is not happy about his growing affection for her. Even though she admits that she loves Takashi, there seems to be something blocking her from actually getting together with him. However, unlike Saeko, she seems far less suitable for him, and is very selfish and self-centered. While a skilled fighter and valuable member of the group, she often times becomes a burden, and if ever lost, while it would also damage Takashi’s psyche, he would be able to go on in a way he wouldn’t if he lost Saeko. In the past, before the world fell apart and Takashi began to change as a person to adapt to it, Rei may have been more suitable, but ever since then, she seems to have taken a backseat to Saeko.!<

OK SHIPPINGS

3) Saya Takagi – >!Here we have the standard childhood friends, where one is in love with the other. Saya is clearly the one in love with Takashi, while he only seems to see her as a friend. She’s obviously a tsundere, but also doesn’t seem to want to pursue a relationship with him like Saeko and Rei do, though it's been made clear that she would be happy if they did end up together, and she sometimes appears to get jealous. Still, she does seem to support Takashi’s relationship with Saeko and Rei, even berating him to act when he fails to act for either of them. She can be a little insufferable at times though, which knocked her down in the rankings as well. And despite her always putting down fellow group member, Kohta Hirano, it’s been hinted that she might be developing some feelings for him. As for Takashi, he only seems to view her as a friend, but he still cares about her a great deal, and is at least attracted to her.!<

4) Shizuka Marikawa – >!She’s the classic ditz of the group, who’s even more childish than Alice/Arisu. It’s very hard to get a reading on her and what she’s thinking, let alone her feelings. Her relationship with Takashi is ambiguous, but seems to lean mostly towards a mother-son relationship with him. Despite this, she does seem to show some signs of having feelings for Takashi, though it seems to be more of attraction than anything. Then there’s also her unusual relationship with her best friend, Rika Minami, which is implied to be a bit of a yuri relationship, or at least sexual to an extent. Takashi doesn’t seem to view her as a potential love interest, but does seem to lust after her to an extent, not that you can blame him with the flirty way she acts.!<

I'm glad this Fandom is still alive.

Guys, thank you. Thank you for keeping this fandom alive for so many years. Can you actually believe the Highschool of the Dead is already 20 years old? I for sure can't, but seeing this community still up and running makes me smile.I know we will never get a Season 2, but I'm truly grateful for what we have: the manga, the anime, and even the light novel (The Last Day, even though it was never officially translated to English). I appreciate all of it. The first time I ever watched HOTD, I was only in the 4th grade, and I fell in love with the series instantly. I still rewatch it from time to time, always enjoy it, and honestly, it easily sits in my top 5 favorite zombie-related media of all time. Knowing that it will never continue actually inspired me to start making my own manga, purely because the anime and manga were just that good in my opinion. The fact that the author passed away deeply saddens me. Now, I know HOTD isn't a perfect series—it's filled with fanservice (which I personally really liked!)—but as the saying goes, no one truly appreciates its worth until it's lost forever. I think I can speak for the majority of fans when I say we still desperately want a second season. We know it stopped because Daisuke Sato passed away. Please don't attack me for saying this, but I honestly think they should have continued the series. Personally, I feel they would have shown him even more respect by finishing his life's work instead of leaving it incomplete. I don't know anything about the publishing industry or making manga, but I definitely know it's not easy. Who knows how many years of his life that man spent to give us this masterpiece, and seeing it cut short breaks my heart. But again, if the ultimate decision was to leave it untouched out of respect, I won't argue with it. To finish up my yapping—thank you all so much again for being here.
