Experienced thrower, first time Highlander, what do I need?

Hi everyone!

I just applied to compete in my first Highland Games where I live and I’m very excited! I’m and experienced thrower with about 10 years of shotput and discus experience and 6 years of hammer.

I’ve been scouring the internet for info but I’m having a hard time narrowing down exactly what I need. I know I’ll need cleats but not if I need a specific kind or what. I also have no idea where to look for the hammer boots/blades and need some direction. If anyone knows where to get large shoes that would be greatly appreciated as well, for reference I’m a size 16 shoe.

I’m about 2 months out from competition and am going to get back into weight training in the next day or two so I have a bit of time to search.

Question regarding kilts

I'm a strongman wanting to sign up for a stone-focused highland event later this year. I was contemplating getting a kilt to get more into the spirit of the games; would that be frowned upon/in poor taste if I don't have any Scottish heritage in my family (at least that I'm aware of)? My family tree is Czech & Germanic.

If it wouldn't be a problem, what do I need to know about getting a kilt? I know the pattern/colors of a tartan is traditionally determined by your family lineage, which wouldn't be applicible in my case.

Homemade Weights

Finally got these done now that the weather has been warm enough to paint them outside. All winter I had been looking up the various ways to make homemade weights and ended up making a cheaper version but didn't like the handle so went back to the drawing board and made these.

Only cost ~$30 for the chain and hardware and paint, and about $210 CAD of steel. I thought I could get a few end pieces for cheap from a local steel supplier, but it didn't work out. Ended up figuring out what cold rolled round would end up being roughly the right weights at 6-8" tall. Should have went thicker and shorter because with the chain and handle they ended up being longer than 18". Definitely better than nothing and I'm very excited to get out there and toss these around.

When it’s time to give your Highland Cow a special spent grain treat.

He’s the best part of brew days! His name is Wyatt and yes he’s a good boy.

Any Advice for Training?

Hello, I am seeking advice for preparing for the highland games in my area. This will be my second time competing and I don't want to die like I did last year. Basically, I didn't train at all last year and said f*ck it and signed up on a whim because it was something I've always wanted to do but never had the chance to. I won first place as a novice and now I want to compete again.

My problem now is that I only have a month and 1/2 to prepare. I practically died last year and don't want to this year. Is there any advice anyone can give me so I'm, 'less dead' by the end of it? (If it helps: I'm female, 5'4 and 300 lb (please don't judge me on my weight, I know I'm obese 😢)) Anything helps 🙏
