The strange path IEM Kolkata is heading towards

Around 2020 IEM went out of MAKAUT and became Autonomous. Then within the past few years they opted out of WBJEE and JEE mains. Two of the biggest exams to study B Tech in India and WB.

  1. They started taking every student with IEMJEE. Which is a smokescreen. Students can take admission even before taking the exams. And anything above 25% marks is alright.

2)They broke their UEM Newtown campus and name it IEM Newton just to confuse people even more. And UEM is really underwhelming compared to IEM Saltlake and Techno Main saltlake and Heritage. So there's a massive difference between IEM Saltlake (ashram campus) and IEM Newton which they'll never admit.

3)The reality is: Their B tech Fees for almost all the courses of CSE, ECE and IT is 9.45 lakh + 20k for Dress and Bag. Anybody who gets around 70-85% in 10th and above 60% in 12th will be eligible.

\*\*Which means anybody who gets above that marks can just go months prior and take admission on a First Come First Serve basis. No exams no JEE mains rank and No WBJEE rank needed.

4)Then after a while they'll say seats in the Saltlake campus are filled (It's not and you know what comes next just like other private colleges) And also while in it they'll push the Newtown Campus for you. Saying all CSE seats are full In Saltlake.

5)And then it comes to their Donation under management quota to fill the seats that they said are already full(yes the seats are not full). And their donation asked is really really really less than other colleges like Techno Main saltlake and Heritage.

Because they are already free to take 9.45 +20k from every single of their students legally, compared to the 6-6.5 lakh fees of colleges who are under MAKAUT like TMSL and others. So they're keeping the donation low for Management quota and making it look lucrative.

Now Let's Compare it to Other Decent Private Colleges..

Colleges like TMSL and Heritage , They have to take a Set amount of Students from WBJEE and JEE MAINS with their cut off, which is an acceptable parameter to judge students. And Then they can take donations for whatever seats are left.

And they can't charge over a certain semester Fees so Good students will still have a chance to enter these colleges. So almost all of the Top 4-5 private colleges in Kolkata will have students who will fetch the biggest packages. What IEM will do? Where's the students who'll bring decent Companies? You charge 9.65lakh for a course and almost every good student who can afford private colleges still can't pay your fees that high. So they wouldn't go to IEM.

\*\*Now I've got no problem with Whatever they are doing with their institution. Until it was my turn to put my son in IEM\*\*

My question was "If anyone with acceptable Marks can get in with money then who will be the Student who will get the packages?" Who'll be the students from this batch who'll pull decent companies for placement?

IEM BECAME IEM CAUSE : They used to take the top students from WBJEE and JEE MAINS and they used to be the students who used to get the highest packages and shine a light on IEM's name.

But now They're taking anybody and doing a gamble to replace their Top Tier WBJEE AND JEE MAINS Students who made IEM. Who made IEM what IEM is. And now they're using their old name to pull anybody in their college.

If this keeps on happening then their results will Fall in next 2-3 years and decent Companies will stop coming to IEM.

In 2026 In Campus placement is not a thing anymore, only a few good colleges pull some companies to do a on Campus Hiring. And If this goes on IEM will soon be out of the list.

IEM is milking it at this point cause if we take 3 top colleges I, T and H takes 500 students

And assumptions are that H and T will take 350 from WBJEE AND JEE and 150 from donation. (This is assumptions based on 350+150 division)

H - 350x 6 lakhs = 21 crores (4yrs).

H's Management 150 x ( 6+7)lakhs = 19.5 cr

Total of = 40.5 cr in 4 years to cover up their college faculty and placements everything around B TECH cse. (These are all Assumptions for 500 students) With their fees and avg Donation near about the same of what these colleges take.

And College T will also take around 42-45crs with this type of maths.

Now college "I" will take 500 Students: 350 direct Admission and 150 with donation, and mind it their so called avg Donation will be less than other colleges but will be added to a huge fees that is for everyone.

350x 9.65 lakhs = 33 crores

150 x 12 lakhs = 18 crores

So the college that takes so called less donation will pull out 33+18 = 51 crores. Around 10-11 crores more than the top private colleges that will eventually have better students cause of WBJEE AND JEE MAINS acceptance.

And the real numbers can be even more WILD for all of these colleges mentioned.

And this made me really confused and I will put my student in another college that'll accept WBJEE. I don't think IEM will be a safe place when he will pass in 2030. Just who will be the students to pull companies? Why companies will come to IEM if they stop having the top students. I mean anybody is going to IEM nowadays if they have extra money.

Way more money that is needed for private colleges

HELP.

Hey seniors, I recently joined IEM Salt Lake CSE Core. I still have around 1 month before college starts, and I want to use this time properly.

I’m a beginner in coding, so I wanted guidance on where to start — especially for Python, programming basics, and DSA.

What should I focus on in the first 1–2 months so that I don’t struggle in first year?

If possible, please suggest:

Best roadmap for beginners

Good YouTube channels/courses

Important topics to cover before college starts

Common mistakes to avoid in first year

Would really appreciate your advice. Thank you 🙏

IEM salt lake BTech cse

Hey guys,

I’m joining IEM Salt Lake this year for B.Tech CSE. Before everyone rolls their eyes and hits me with the classic "run away" or "it’s a school with a B.Tech degree," trust me—I already get it. I’ve seen all the rants about the uniforms, the 75% attendance obsession, and the endless assignments. I know what I’m walking into.

But there’s one specific thing nobody actually explains, and I need a real answer from current students or alumni:

Is it so strict that you literally can't even chill with your friends during free periods, gaps, or after college?

People keep saying "there's no campus life," but what does that actually mean on a daily basis?

During free periods/gaps: Are we forced to just sit in the classroom like kids? Can you actually hang out in the canteen or find a spot to just talk, or are guards/management constantly breathing down your neck?

Leaving the gates: Can you step outside the building during lunch or a long gap to grab a bite in Sector V, or is it a total lockdown until classes end?

Evenings and Sem Gaps: Once the daily classes wrap up or when the semester ends, do people actually hang out, explore Salt Lake, and have a life? Or does the workload completely fry your brain to the point where your social life is just dead?

I’m not expecting some crazy, massive campus festival vibe. I just want to know if I can make a solid group of friends and actually hang out during the day without getting penalised, or if the vibe is genuinely so suffocating that even talking in your free time is an issue.

Am I About to Make a Horrible College Decision?

I’m getting CSE with Data Science specialization in both Techno Main Salt Lake and UEM, and I’m honestly a little confused about which one to choose.

From what I’ve understood so far, Techno Main seems to have a stronger overall reputation and public perception, which is why many people are recommending it over UEM. But at the same time, UEM also offers a CS-related branch that aligns with my long-term goals in software/data science.

One thing I genuinely want to understand is why UEM receives so much criticism online. Is it mainly because of strict rules and campus culture, or are there actual academic/placement concerns behind it? I’ve seen very mixed opinions everywhere, so I’m trying to understand the reality in a balanced way before making a decision.

Also, I’m getting ECE in IEM as well. Considering placements, future opportunities, and the possibility of pursuing Data Science later on, do you think choosing ECE at IEM would be a better option?

I’d really appreciate an honest perspective from someone who knows about these colleges.

Is UEM Actually That Bad ?

I really need an unbiased opinion from you. Irrespective of personal preferences, could you honestly tell me which option you genuinely think would be best for my future?

I’ve been feeling really confused and helpless about this decision, so your honest guidance would truly mean a lot to me.

I'm still debating whether I'll commit to this college or not, parents paid semester fees despite my attempts at convincing them and now the admission office keeps telling me to buy books and uniform immediately but I want to wait until I give wbjee exam and see if how I do

IEM ECE vs UEM CSE Data Science for Masters Abroad

I’m currently getting ECE at IEM Salt Lake and CSE with specialization in Data Science at UEM, and I’m really confused about which one would be the better option if my goal is to pursue Masters abroad in the future, especially in countries like Germany or other European countries.

I’m more interested in the tech/data science field, but IEM also has a stronger reputation overall, so I’m finding it difficult to decide. I’d really appreciate honest opinions regarding academics, placements, coding culture, research opportunities, internships, GPA pressure, and overall profile-building for MS applications abroad.

Also, if anyone from IEM or UEM is planning for Masters abroad especially Germany please text me or comment below. I’d genuinely love to connect and talk about the process, opportunities, and overall experience.

I'm currently a first-year in UEM, how can I apply for a NOC certificate from my college I've heard most colleges give a hard time about it so what's the scenario here?
